here in south l.a. wetlands, there's proof that coyotes use this area because i'm finding coyote scat inside these fences. coyotes are species that most people know live in the l.a. area, but people think that they live in the mountains-- mountainous areas or griffith park, where there's more open space, but really don't think of them as animals able to adapt to this type of landscape. [car alarm beeps] back to the ranger station. yeah, so, we're in griffith park, and here is one right here. this park is surrounded by freeway, by urbanization, by some major barriers for wildlife. so, we just saw two, maybe 3 coyotes within this picnic area. so, they know that this resource is here on a regular basis. coyotes are doing pretty well in this urban landscape thanks to their adaptability, but the mountain lions are another story. they really need some help if they're going to have a population here for multiple generations to come. i use camera traps, which are motion-activated cameras that have a sensor in f

l.a. sheriff's department said the suspect is the husband of the bishop's house cleaner. they arrested the man yesterday after a stand-off at his home. a possible motive? the man believed bishop david o'connell owed him money. l.a. police say the house keeper is cooperating with their investigation and that she was not scheduled to work the day of the shooting. bishop o'connell was found shot to death in his home on saturday. he had served as a priest and bishop in l.a. county for more than 45 years. >>> walnut creek is about to get more gender neutral restrooms the city council set to transition all of the single stall restrooms from gender specific to gender neutral. the city says some of the parks still have gender specific single stall bathrooms despite state law requiring them to be universely accessible. the city council will vote tomorrow to change the municipal code which currently prohibits people from using or entering a toilet facility designated for members of the opposite sex.

last year was the highest on record for hate crimes in l.a. and we know that three-quarters of all religious hate crimes are perpetrated against jews. we're not waiting for this problem to keep growing. there's a lot of work happening on the ground. we're actively working to address the rise of hate crimes. we've created a newly formed civil rights and equity department on the prevention side. that department launched the l.a. for all campaign, the largest anti-hate campaign in city history. they've also hosted several intervention trainings and dozens of community dialogues. on the reporting side it's really important that we have data when these crimes occur so that we can track it and make sure we marshal the resources necessary to respond in kind. we've made it easier for victims to report hate crimes and incidents. victims of a hate crime can call 311, the general city services hotline to report an incident. this is important in a city like l.a. where residents might be less likely to call the police. my team is also working closely with

in fact, a memphis man named cornell walker told the l.a. times this weekend that days before that scorpion team beat tyre nichols to death, this gentleman, cornell walker, was pulled over and accosted by scorpion officers. walker says emmett martin, the officer listed as the, quote, victim in the nichols police report. that he was the man who pulled walker from his car. the l.a. times reports walker and he -- were first approached by the officers. they believed they were being targeted by young guys who wanted to steal their car. walker said he saw officer martin step out of an unmarked police vehicle. i need to see you [bleep] hands or i will blow your head off. walker did not realize they were police at first until he saw their badges and the word scorpion on the back of their shirts. martin, that is the member of the scorpion unit, came over to their car and pulled walker out, pointing a gun at his head from one foot away. walker told the times. the officer took him to the police car where the other officers also had guns out. walker sai

how far from l.a. are you?e a strange anomaly that's happening there or is it in one of those little valleys where, yes, they do get snow sometimes? i can't believe what i'm seeing right now. >> reporter: well, this area does get snow sometimes, but not all the time. we're an hour, hour and a half from the l.a. area. it is not common to see this kind of snow here. everyone is just in shock. no one knows how to deal with it. and a lot of the interstates in the l.a. area are shut down. here on my left is i-5, so we're right on the grapevine essentially. normally you would see a lot of traffic here. it is obviously empty. there are crews that are working to try to get the snow and the ice off the roads, but it is impossible at the moment. officials saying they don't even know when they're going to reopen. and that's the kind of thing that's rare and strange in southern california. we've been here throughout the last couple of days and i just want to show you sort of the accumulation of the snow. if it's not snowin
