l.a. wildfires. one was small and didn't damage any homes, but the second was that deadly eaton fire that destroyed altadena and killed at least 17 people. tonight, our investigative unit has obtained new cell phone video that captures the early moments of the eaton canyon fire. and it shows flames around the base of a hillside electrical tower. here's the thing. that power line had been decommissioned, meaning the tower was out of service and with no power. we took the video to bay area electrical engineer ken buske, who investigated more than a thousand wildfires. one would not expect an energized line to come to life, busse says the strong winds might have blown adjacent live power lines very close to this decommissioned line, which absorbed power from those lines. the electricity then ran to the dead tower and sparked a fire in dry brush by the base. now, investigative reporter jaxon van derbeken is on that one. who obtained that cell phone video? jackson, what else can you tell us about that? we

l.a. county wildfires.he state's largest home insurance company, state farm, wants to raise its rates for everyone statewide. nbc's gia vang breaks down how this could impact people in the bay area. the wind driven wildfires in the l.a. area that started off the year burned more than 10,000 homes into raging balls of flames and then ashes. so far, state farm says it's already paid out more than $1 billion to customers, with more to come. that's part of why the state's largest home insurer of nearly 3 million policies is asking the department of insurance to immediately approve a rate increase of 22%. to the dismay of some homeowners, we're doing the best that we can. i'm not sure why we should have to pay for southern california. nothing has changed in our specific location that i would think would warrant an increase for us personally, so i'm hoping that it doesn't. state farm says if approved, insurance will cost more for customers because the risk is greater here. it said the cost of the wildfires will f
