he's been here in the place today la bourse all day. what can you tell us about what happened this morning with the far right wing protest that took place at the place de la bourse? >> well, the square is right behind me. and you can see right now it's peaceful. as you can see yourself, ayman. but at one point, a group of some hundred right wing demonstrators, calling themselves soccer fans, soccer supporters, arrived in the square chanting, they then had a standoff with the police, and with others who were calling them in return fascists. the police worked very quickly to move them out of the square, riot police steadily pushing them through that square you can see behind me followed by water cannons and then things did get very tense. the water cannon fired on those protesters. the protesters threw missiles and in some cases flares. and then there was a running confrontation, if you like, for about half a mile along the street to the train station. we were running with them, there were a number who were on the floor arrested, and bein

you are at the square where brussels held a minute's silence, the place de la bourse.alk about what you have been seeing and hearing. reporter: this is an improvised shrine that has emerged here at the place de la bourse. more people have come here, i think, in the last few hours, and we are looking at maybe 1000 or 2000 people who are gathered here. they are chanting songs. it are putting down candles, and they have sent out the message that we are not afraid. we do not want the terrorists to take away our lifestyle, and it is a similar picture to what i had seen when i went to paris after the attacks, and people came out to encourage each other, that they will not back down after such terrible terrorist attacks. brent: that solidarity you're talking about, i assume it may even be greater now that people are hearing there may be a tangible, tangible, proof that there may be a connection between the terror attacks and what we saw happen yesterday in brussels. reporter: absolutely, and it is not the belgian government only that has made statements that they are closely

she is at the place de la bourse where people are gathering. i understand they've been there for some time. what can you tell us, olivia? >> reporter: there are several hundred people gathered at the place de la bourse in the heart of brussels. this is the main vigil site for the country of belgium right now. if you walk around, you can see many people holding up posters that say unis contre la haine, united against hate. you also see people holding signs in english that say free hugs. look behind me at the diversity of flags among the people that have come out for this vigil. i'm seeing belgian flags, turkish flags. i'm seeing triangular stars green with the red stars. that's actually the flag of the kurdish fighters. there was a man holding that flag, and he says he's out here tonight to show that all these people are united. when you're a muslim living in belgium, you don't feel like a muslim. chris, that's one of the themes we keep hearing from everybody we speak to here today. that's one of the things that stoke this country, that sense of

you are apparently in the place de la bourse. what can you tell us about what's going on near you, gabe? >> hi, there, joy. we're here at the square at the makeshift memorial. and as you can see behind me, it has pretty much returned to normal here. just a short time ago, it was a very tense atmosphere, as ayman was talking about. the far right wing protesters had pretty much overtaken the square. according to our cameraman here on the scene, it was a little less than 400 or so. they estimated about 100 or so protesters here. a few even crossed over this makeshift memorial on their way right over here to the stairs. and they had overtaken this area. there were chants back and forth. some anti-immigrant chants. where as there were people here who had gathered here at the memorial who were dueling chants. this was a very tense atmosphere for the better part of two hours. thankfully, the police were able to disperse the crowd. there were several water tanks that's fired water cannons onto the crowd. some of the protesters were detai

live from the place de la bourse, people have been gathering all day after yesterday's attacks. nbc learned the two brothers who detonated suicide bombs in brussels khs alid and brahim kbrks akraous were involved in paris providing a safe house for those who carried out that attack. law enforcement officials tell nbc news belgian authorities had poor knowledge the attack here was being planned though it was not specific enough information to permit them to stop the horrific bombings of the metro and airport that left 31 dead and 300 injured. belgian and u.s. officials now say they are certain the man on the left in this airport surveillance picture najim laachraoui, the suspected bomb maker died in the attack. confirmed dead is brahim bakraoui and brother, khalid, who died in the metro bomb. the man dressed in white is believed to have fled the scene at the airport. meanwhile the bloodshed in brussels continues to reverberate through the american political system and the campaign with gop presidential front-runner donald trump today mulling using nuclear weapons against isis. >>

we're in the center of town at the place de la bourse there was as mixture of resilience and they areves, that they won't be cowed by these acts of terrorism. at the same time, it's fair to say that people here are on edge, there is anxiety and that's precisely, as we heard from belgian's prosecutor earlier today, a number of men are on the loose. most prominently, the third man that we've seen in the surveillance video. he's wearing the light-colored jacket, wearing a cap and glasses. police do not know who he is or if they do, they haven't shared it with us. they have warned that he's out there and dangerous. they are also looking for the believed bomb maker in the attacks, najim laachraoui. authorities here are being very tight-lipped. they don't want to give away any information. they have asked people to stop tweeting and covering the searches and raids in realtime because they are concerned that it could tip off people iolved and they are very keen to try to get investigators out on the ground and bring in the suspects before they can do any more damage, carol. >> clarissa ward

and people have been going to church and they are starting to come down now to the plas de la bourse. the police asked people not to come out for that march. organizers did cancel it. it does remain to be seen if a lot of o people will turn up here. authorities said they had security concerns because they have so many police involved in the actual investigation and they couldn't secure the march. so you have this ironic situation where a march designed to show defines to terrorists and send a message has been called off because of fears brought about because of those very terrorists which is a sad thing. around the square this morning we saw military vehicles blocking vehicle access to the square. you have a sad and strange site of armed soldiers patrolling streets and squares, standing guard outside of cafes. it is quieter than normal here. and businesses are hurting and fear a hit to the country's tourist industry. fair to say people are still stunned and apprehensive with those suspects at large. as you say many people fear they could be another attack. and there is also a sense o

and there's not many people down behind me in the place de la bourse. i will guarantee that by this afternoon there will be several hundred people down there as there have been for the last few days. they have cleared the square of the media. we were down there for the last few days, of course. they've cleared the square. they've moved some of the memorial that is down there off the main roadway because they want to reopen the roadway eventually. but the vast bulk of the flowers and message are still down there, outside of what is the old stock exchange here in brussels. and it was interesting today. we saw people there going through and selectively picking things out of where the flowers and message are. and i sent one of our producers to find out what it was. it's the archivists here in brussels. they're going through and picking out messages and things that they see as symbolic. and they're putting them away for posterity. they're going to keep them as a piece of belgian history going forward, george. >> i found it poignant, you have certainly seen y
