>> yeah, steve. the state yesterday in opening statements, they asked the jury to find christian rivera guilty. but the defense deferred their opening statements until later on in the trial. now, court prosecutors say surveillance video does show rivera's chevy malibu circling her on that fateful are up. he got out and started running next to her and became very angry when he she said she was going to call the cops. he claimed i blacked out and remembered he was driving with mollie's bloody body in the trunk and dumped her body under cornstalks in the field. defense has tried to get that confession thrown out because he wasn't read his full miranda rights. reported to video and d.n.a. evidence to be shown during the trial to prove his guilt. rivera's defense team honed in on tibbetts' boyfriend dalton jack who took the stand yesterday. they asked him about an incident where he cheated on her as well as his former anger issues but at one point dalton jack said he did not want to be there. take a listen. >> why do you not want to be sitting in this room with that guy, with this man? >> i wholeheartedly believe he is guilty. >> and then both dalton jack and his brother who lived in the same home with mollie were out of town when tibbetts died. an autopsy for tibbetts showed blood found in the back of rivera's car matched the body found in the cornfield and that the body had been stabbed 7 to 12 times in the chest, ribs, neck and skull. of course day two of that trial does start a couple of hours 8:30 local time. back to you. steve: a terrible story. will thank you, ashley. it? >> is. ainsley: where overcounting the number of children hospitalized with covid-19. new data finds california overcounted child hospitalizations by at least 40%. potentially distorting the national figures on the effect of the disease on our children. so let's bring in fox news medical contributor dr. nicole saphier. good morning, dr. saphier. >> good morning ainsley. ainsley: good morning. this is based on two different studies. how did this happen? >> three despite criticism from republicans the white house are president biden is active at least behind the scenes on several phone calls to try to deescalate this violence. as you said, he has been speaking with prime minister netanyahu many times over the past few days. the two have a relationship dating back years. and the president hopes that will help the situation. the white house released a readout yesterday saying, quote the president conveyed to the prime minister that he expected a significant deescalation today. meaning yesterday, on the path to a cease-fire. meanwhile, there is no cease-fire. rockets are still flying. buildings are being blown up and sadly people are dying. prime minister netanyahu says he will not stop with rockets or other defense measures until he knows his people are safe. listen. >> to have israel criticizeside absurd. not only is it absurd and unjust and untrue. it does enormous damage to democracies that are fighting this kind of evil. >> the president congresswoman rashida tlaib upon his rival in michigan earlier this week. she has family in the west bank. gave the president an earful about the situation. congresswoman tlaib and her colleague congresswoman alexandria ocasio-cortez announced legislation to stop u.s. arms sales to israel. >> what biden and kamala harris are pursuing is exactly backwards. our friends and allies the people we should be standing alongside and with he is alienating, undermining, assaulting, lecturing and attacking. >> hamas is saying that a cease-fire is reportedly imminent. the question is what posture will president biden take when things settle down so if things should ramp up god forbid in the future he has a persuasive position. back to you. steve: that's right. all right. david spunt, thank you very much. ted cruz said that joe biden's lack of backbone to stand up and stand with israel is causing this war in the middle east. and, you know, as david laid it out, so, joe biden calls b.b. netanyahu and says you guys have got to wrap it up. we have got to get towards a cease-fire and the israelis said no, mr. president, i'm sorry. but a cease-fire is encouraging the palestinian terrorists to continue their attack. so it's harder to accept the cease-fire and it is prolonging the war against them. but they fired 4,000 rockets into israel so what do you expect them to do? why would joe biden think if he called and said hey i know they are firing 4,000 rockets into israel that you have got to stop they are going to say right, that's a great idea we will stop immediately. ainsley: they have to defend themselves. hamas has been labeled a terrorist organization. lawrence: i think there is a little bit of delusional behavior going on from the white house right now? it's not like president trump although he was a supporter of israel. he and b.b. disagreed sometimes. he even said on the white house lawn one time when they were doing a press conference well, b.b. you are not going to get everything that you want. that is a complicated matter. what is not complicated is hamas continuing to fire on israel and the fact that democrats can't draw a line right there. we should talk about the diplomacy and all of that. you can't negotiate with terrorists. steve: here's the thing, lawrence, what's different for this president is he has got a left wing in the democratic party that wants him to stand up against israel. they are pro-palestinian and, you know, aoc yesterday and other progressive members of the squad said hey, the united states cannot sell israel $700 million worth of arms to protect themselves. ainsley: it shows weakness. why doesn't he stand up to these individuals. steve: american politics. ainsley: and say hamas is a terrorist organization. israel has always been our ally. we will stand for israel. lawrence: it's interesting because larry kudlow is fired up about this. he says dems are not standing up for israel. he talked about how this is a different administration from the trump administration. take a look. >> it's tragic that the democratic party is moving against israel and in favor of iranian-backed terrorists. and it's tragic that there isn't total bipartisan support for backing israel. we moved away from the discredited idea that the palestinian israeli conflict issue in the middle east. president trump working with gulf state allies are to align with israel. six arab states joined with israel and the u.s. to form the abraham accords. and i think had mr. trump been reelected, saudi arabia, which favors the abraham accords, would probably have formally joined along with the others. steve: netanyahu had said they will continue to fight back until there is significant change from the palestinians. lawrence: they should. ainsley: let's talk about the origins of covid. because of have you these republicans on the house intel committee. they are really pushing our government to investigate the origins of this. they say there is evidence that there were leaks in the wuhan lab back in 2017 going back that far. they want to find out the origins and stop this so that we don't have to go through this again as a country. senator kennedy, john kennedy really pressed the cdc director on this. listen to this. >> what are the possibilities? >> certainly the possibilities of that most coronavirus that we know of are of origin that have infected the populations as far as cov 1, mersz generally come from an animal origin. >> are there any other possibilities? >> certainly will -- origin another possibility. lawrence: we don't know but there seems to be a lack of curiosity. it. steve: we should know. lawrence: we should know. no one really besides the republicans that are pushing for this to get this investigation to figure out what exactly went on. and i also want to know because it's only been speculation so far although we have some evidence about funding rand paul has been great on grill fauci. how much american money went to some of this research and did it, in fact, happen in this lab because this was man made. i want to know the answers to this and it just seems to be no pushback to get this solved. steve: think about it this way, folks. here in the united states of america, 52,000 americans have died from cody. 52,000. i was shocked to see that 33,000 of them actually lived here in new york city, which is shocking. 2 million americans have been impacted. so, how did it come to infect the entire planet? and for the suggestion at the end of that soundbite where she was talking a little bit about well, there is some evidence that it could have jumped from animal to humans, but there is no evidence of that. and the republicans, ainsley, to your point, say there is substantial circumstantial evidence that there was a lab leak in 2017 you alluded to this. u.s. diplomats warn that wuhan was conducting dangerous research on coronavirus without following necessary safety protocols. so it could have leaked out then, but it did not. in fall of 2019, they say several researchers in the wuhan lab got really sick with something that looked a lot like coronavirus. ainsley: that was in 2019. steve: yeah. and here's the scary part that puts it all into place, china's military has been involved in that lab. you add it all up, and it looks like if that's not the answer, it's something that should be investigated and the republican from that district in california by the name of devin nunes he says to sean hannity last night, looks like a lab leak. >> we put together all of the open source reporting that we could find and it begins to tell a very clear picture of overwhelming evidence, multiple reporters across multiple countries that talk about the origins of this virus and all signs point to the lab. that's all we really have to go on. because our intelligence community, once again has failed us. we are not sure that we even got all of the information. and we are getting mixed signals from the biden administration. >> despite spending tens of billions of dollars a year on supposedly the most capable intelligence apparatus on the planet. we still can't get to the bottom of it. lawrence: one last thing on this guys, the fact that we aren't showing the amount of power that china has shown, every time there is an investigation into china about this, they say when are we going to start investigating the americans? they are having a propaganda war and we are sitting on our hands and allowing them to win. we know it came to china. why would they say let's investigate the americans on this? steve: you know, joe biden has been asked, has he addressed this issue with the guy and he said no. haven't really brought that up. ainsley: well, they are not cooperating. steve: 250,000 americans are dead that would have been the number one thing i would have brought up. ainsley: devin nunes and republicans have written a letter to joe biden and intelligence community they say they have until the end of may to give them answers. there are three things that they want. they want all of the information turned over on the origin of covid-19. they want any of the evidence to prove that coronavirus broke out naturally and that it originated in animals. and they are also asking if the intelligence community was involved in any reviews of the gain of function research. we stopped doing gain of function research because it is so dangerous. lawrence: fauci is not being quite honest on this. i'm not trying to tear his integrity. the fact that during the questioning with rand paul splitting hairs he knews to be true there was some type of funding be done. it. ainsley: we shut down the pipelines here because of energy concerns and climate. yet we are allowing it in other countries. and we are allowing china to do this type of gain of function research and it's very dangerous. there have been leaks that have been proven in this lab, dating back to 2017. we can't ignore these problems. and they are too scared to address it because these are powerful countries and we need them. but we cannot ignore this. this virus has affected all of our lives. we can't go through this again. steve: so many more around the world. something else that we can't ignore is there is something going on in society and it has a name now. it's cancel culture where if somebody says something and somebody takes offense to it, next thing you know it becomes a thing on social media and they try to essentially erase that person from american society. chris rock was on the breakfast club show here in new york city on monday and talked a little bit about it keep in mind, he's a comedian, one of the best in the world. lawrence: he is. steve: he is hilarious. he lives in new jersey by the way. his business is fraught with peril now because if he says something deemed inappropriate to somebody, he might get canceled. and that is leading to tough times in the comedy business. here's chris rock. >> i see a lot of unfunny comedians. i see unfunny tv shows. i see unfunny award shows. i see unfunny movies because no one -- everybody is scared to like, you know, make a move. you know? that's not a place to be. you know. we should have the right to fail. >> right. >> because failure, failure is a part of art. you know what i mean? it's the ultimate cancel. but, you have got a place where people are scared to talk. that's not, especially in america, you are scared to talk. but, you know, that's what people want, you know. got to make adjustments. >> right. lawrence: it's destroying everything. he is one of my top five comedians. dave chapelle also talked about this. he said the other day this almost ran me away. this is essentially why i went off the grid for 10 years is because you didn't know what you were going to say that was going to destroy everything it juicede used to be a standard that comedian could say tackle everything. it is their job to make you uncomfortable because it's funny. ainsley: if you go back and you watch some of these comedians from 10, 15 years ago, watch it and you are like oh, can't say that now. you can't say that now. people are scared because they don't want to lose their jobs, too. if you say something that someone takes offense to, you are called in to your boss' office and you could be canceled. you could lose your paycheck. steve: what we have seen as well is people look at things that were popular once upon a time in history, whether it's a movie or it's a book. it could be a dr. suess book. and there are things that have not aged well given the sensibilities and points of view today. they say you know what, that thing from 1940 is inappropriate so we need to get rid of that as well. you know, it's easy to do that but then it becomes how much of your personal history and history of your country are you will to erase? lawrence: i continue to say it's important for us, even when we disagree with someone else's speech to defend the principle. not the person. because only a matter of time before it comes for us. it's a wildfire, can cancel culture is. if you pour gasoline on it don't be surprised when that fire jumps back on you like a barbecue pit. steve: i misspoke a moment ago the number of deaths in the united states is coming closer to 600,000. it is a terrible problem. that's why we need to know did it come from that lab? >> well, this is what we know. we know that this little boy cash, was there sleeping in the same room with his twin brother. in the middle of the night, it was about 5:00 a.m., the early, early morning hours, this guy, 18-year-old dearyan brown reportedly wearing an ankle monitor from a previous offense, comes into the room. he stands over cash for about a minute looking around. then pulls back the blanket, then grabs the boy and takes him out as he is sleeping. he is found a little over an hour later by a woman who is out jogging around 6:30 in the morning. she sees what she think i almost hate to even say it is a dog that has been hit by a car possibly, goes up, she finds the little boy. no shirt, no shoes. covered in blood from the torso up and what strikes her are there are ants crawling all over his little feet. steve: that's terrible. we have got a soundbite also from daily mail of this is a woman by the name of monica sherrod. she is the girlfriend to the biological father of cash. and this is what she had to say about what happened that night. >> all you think about is your baby that's missing. and when they said cameras. there he was. the boy taking my son out of his bed. why would they hurt him? he was four. he was like this big. he was so little. he wasn't even the size of a 4-year-old. steve: it's every parent's nightmare. and then nancy, after the suspect did that, went back into the room. >> he comes back. he comes back. he comes back in. then he looks over the other little twin boy, carter, cash and carter and then he appears if you look at the baby monitor video very carefully. he appears to like he hears something and then he leaves. he came back for the brother awrns lawrence that is the motive? what makes someone do something like this? do the police know? >> you know what? that's where i'm lucky is because prosecutors are never required to show motive. to say go into somebody like this' head and figure out what's going on. but already the defendant's mother, who, again, reportedly was wearing an ankle monitor, reportedly for evading police, says he is being set up and he has mental issues. now, does that rise to legal insanity? it will not. so no motive as of yet. we do know an edged implement was used to kill this 4-year-old child. ainsley: nancy, it's so bizarre though, i was reading these articles and it says the biological mother couldn't find her children. i think she has been reunited with carter. the dad was dating this girl who we saw the soundbite from. buff he hasn't been seen in the house since march. so she was raising these twins by herself. and then the suspect, the body was found a mile away from the house. the suspect lived a mile away from where the body was found. so or half a mile i should say. is there a connection here? >> well, i can tell you the golf the program is to push critical race theory under the guise of mathematics and if you look at that oakland school district, the students have a 27% proficiency rate in math. it's 90% minority. what will happen if this is implemented, that proficiency rate will drop even lower. it will destroy opportunities for minority students. it's not about being equitable. it's about destroying equal opportunity. these children will not have an opportunity to be successful in life if they cannot be taught math, traditional math. lawrence: i find it insulting that they are treating our kids like this. part of the curriculum that is being -- addressing students' mistakes is a form of white sprerm is i. reject ideas of natural gifts and talents equitable frowns on having only one right answer. so, if you don't say there is one right answer, then you are racist. this is not for preparing our kids. again, i went through a lot of charter schools that are making it happen for our kids. why won't they support that? [laughter] lawrence: on the couch with me today, i'm a texan, i screw up every name. we're country, we just say it how it sounds -- ainsley: i'm like, well, you know what i mean. steve: and i'm from kansas, and next door is a tate that has two pronunciations. if you live in the western part of missouri, you say missouri for the most part. if you live in the eastern half of the state, you say missouri. ainsley: okay. didn't know that. tee tee maybe i've got that backwards. anyway -- ainsley: we know what you mean. steve: we know what they mean when the cdc says if you have been vaccinated and you're two weeks after the second shot, you are fully vaccinated, and you no longer have to wear a mask indoors, and that is so liberating, and that is such good news. and that is why new york state yesterday reopened with that good news. but then you've got what nancy pelosi continues to do in the house of representatives. she says, you know, we don't care about that. attending physician says we are following the cdc guidelines. they're not. the cdc says if you are inside a room and you've been vaccinated, you are fine. if you don't -- if you haven't within vaccinated -- been vaccinated, wear a mask. but every one of the democrats has been vaccinated in the house, so you would think that every one of them would be able to take the masks off. the senate actually has said, you know what? you don't need to wear a mask in here. so what's going on now is on -- mast from the great state of florida, they said, you know what? we don't have wear the mask. brian mast, by the way with, has been vaccinated, so they started a revolt, and yesterday a bunch of republicans did not wear the max, and next thing you know, nancy pelosi fines them, i think there's close to a dozen, $500 the first time, and if they do it again, $2500 automatically deducted from they paycheck. lawrence: this is so silly. you've got 'em doing it for theater, and i think it's so important, you know, even though the cdc has said this about the masks, it's important to go to where we started when it comes to mask. the original purpose of the mask was to slow the spread. we shouldn't have to have this guidance going on right now because it's been slowing down. but it seems like the purpose now is to get rid of covid completely. that's not going to happen for a long time. it's time to open up, it's time to be an example for the american people so they can know they can get back to work. in the meantime, these guys continue passing bills letting people know that they don't have to work anymore. they can just sit at home, collect a check, and states and businesses are suffering as a result. ainsley: we can all relate to this though, to the mask thing. if you're vaccinated, why do we have to wear a mask inside some of these businesses in my apartment complex we got an e-mail that said you still have to wear your mask inside. and i was, like, why? i'm not at risk, so why do i have have to wear a mask? when you go in certain stores, if they say you have to wear a mask, you have to. and that's what nancy pelosi's doing. she is telling them they have to wear a mask x they're saying, no, we don't. the cdc is telling us we don't. we are following the science. and now they're getting fined as a result. we interviewed congressman ralph norman, he said he was fined $500, and he's going to continue to not wear the mask. listen. >> a double standard. why, if it's good outside the chambers, why is it, to take it off, why can't we take it off inside? we still have devoted shifts where you supposedly social distance. it's a scare tactic that ms. pelosi has continually done and, again, we're just tired of it. yeah, we're not going -- i'm not putting another mask on. you wonder why she's continually doing. this follow the science for a year and a half, and now she ignores the science just to punish us. and i doubt any democrat would be fined. steve: well, we know why she's doing it, because she has said that while every democrat has been survey ised and they said we've been vaccinated in the house, a number of republicans have not. and she wants every republican to get the shot. lawrence: it's a perm choice though. -- personal choice. if you took the vaccine, then you're safe. you shouldn't be worried about the next man that is still thinking about whether they want to get the vaccine or not. it should not be criminal. i finally got the vaccine, but it took me a while to get there. i wanted to see the science, i wanted to make sure my mom got it and everyone and see how impacted -- my mom's high risk because she has lupus, and i wanted to see how it i affected my family. that was a personal decision. forcing them to do this, it's unreal. steve: right. the point of this whole thing is part of the federal government is the cdc, and the cdc is saying that if you have been vaccinated, you do not have to wear the mask. and so for every democrat in the house, they've been vaccinated. including nancy pelosi. so a lot of people are scratching their heads going why is the house leadership on the democratic side not following the science? lawrence: control, control, control. ainsley: it's all political, really is. is so in chicago there's so much crime in chicago, you've been there, you've walked the streets with the democratic alderman. we're going to play a little bit of that in just a minute. the mayor there, lori lightfoot, is in the news because she's trying to make newsrooms more diverse by saying she's only going to take interviews with black and brown journalists. she says i have been struck since my first day on the campaign trail back in 2018 by the overwhelming whiteness and maleness of chicago's media outlets, editorial boards, the political press corps and, yes, the city hall press corps specifically. lawrence: yeah. steve: and a member of the city hall press corps with the chicago tribune, gregory pratt, tweeted this out yesterday. he said i am a latino reporter at chicago tribune whose interview request was granted for today, he tweeted. however, i asked the mayor's office to lift itsing condition on others, and when they said no, we -- the chicago tribune -- canceled the interview with the mayor because he says politicians don't get to choose who covers them. but that is what she's trying to do. she's halfway through her first term. she's two years in and has said i'm only going to speak to reporters of color about my halfway point. and so that is why we're talking about it, that's why she has suddenly put that mandate out. lawrence: raymond lopez, who has been a thorn in the side of the mayor, this is a guy that doesn't care about politics, he says what about the black and brown kids that are being shot every day? are they going to get interviews? are they going to get covered? take a look. >> put it quite bluntly, she's very incompetent, and it shows. she has failed this city for the last two years. her abrasive style has been seen not only with the media, not only with members of the city council or even her own department, but now she's trying to pit communities and people of the city against each other with these kinds of discussions. meanwhile, just on my way to the studio i've had two shootings in my ward alone in the last hour. shootings continue in every neighborhood. on michigan avenue yesterday someone was shot, another carjacking. none of that is part of the discussion except for the racist whiteness of chicago media. steve: and when we were talking about this earlier, lawrence actually on the tv show made a request to the mayor, lori lightfoot. he would like to interview you. lawrence: we've been making requests for months, maybe years. steve: well, maybe now -- >> i'll say one more thing on diversity. diversity is a good thing. diversity of thought, diversity of opinion. i'm a black man on fox news, i provide a certain perspective that you may not get from someone else. i don't want to be judged just based on the color of my skin. i don't want to be hired just because i am black. it can be a part of it, it can be a part of my real world experience and the light that i walk, but what she's encouraging is discrimination. and you don't encourage diversity by discriminating against others, and we saw this on college campuses when it came to enrolling black and brown people. so this is going everywhere in the country. ainsley: right. you want to earn that job. you don't want to get it for the wrong reason. they're fighting racism by being racist, by discriminating against people who are not black now. what if donald trump did that? what if it were i'm just going to interview with white people? it would be front page all over the place. steve: well, and the chicago tribune said, mayor, you can't do that. ainsley: i'm proud of them for doing that. lawrence: but if she is giving it out to black and brown, like i said, i would love that. [laughter] steve: you've got lots of questions. ainsley: 8:11 on the east coast. day two of the suspect accused of killing mollie tibbetts. ashley stromeyer is outside the courthouse with more. hey, ashley. >> reporter: good morning, ainsley. yes, the defense deferred their opening statement to later on in the trial, but the state are are the ones is asking the jury to find christian rivera guilty. surveillance video shows his chevy malibu allegedly circling mollie tibbetts on that fateful up run. he has confessed he got out and started running next to her, but he became angry when she said she was going to call the police. he dumped her body under corn stalks in a corn field. the defense is trying to get that confession thrown out, but prosecutors pointed to video and dna evidence to be shown during the trial to prove he is guilty. tibbets' boyfriend took the stand yesterday. they asked him about an incident where he cheated on molly as well as his former anger issues. at one point he said he did not want to be there. take a listen. >> why do you not want to be sitting in this room with that guy, with this man? >> i whole wholeheartedly belies guilty. >> reporter: both dalton jack and his brother were out of town the day that mollie tibbetts died. they shared a home, the two brothers and molly did. an autopsy showed blood in the back of rivera's car matched the body found in the cornfield and she had been standed 7-12 times. as you said, ainsley, day two of the trial starts here at 8:30. in just a couple of hours -- actually, a just a little over an hour from now back up and running for the second day. back to you guys. ainsley: thank you, ashley. that is terrible. jillian has some news for us. >> reporter: let's begin with a fox news alert. israel and hamas are expected to reach a ceasefire after more than a week of fighting. both sides are reportedly working on an agreement that could be finalized within the next two days, but it comes as they continue to take strikes with gaza city being hit early this morning. hamas rockets struck homes in southern and central israel. [ squawk ] only pay for what you need. ♪ liberty. liberty. liberty. liberty. ♪ ♪♪ ainsley: hotels across the country are struggling to meet the demands of people ready for vacation. lydia hu from our sister network, fox business, is live as some hotels are turning guests away because they just do not have the staff. good morning, lydia. >> reporter: good morning, ainsley. yeah, the hotels can't keep up with growing bookings that they are seeing as we emerge from the pandemic. we are at the hilton in mystic, connecticut, where the owner tells me the hr manager, human resources manager, is pulling double duty because the hotel's only at a 50% employment right now. the hr manager is helping out in the kitchen, waiting tables, cleaning rooms. watch this to hear some more. >> there are a lot of people who are doing double duty. these are, you know, folks who are working 60 hours a week to fill in the gaps so we can open, so we can be available to guests. but it's a very difficult time. we need help. we need to be able to bring people back to work. >> reporter: now, the leisure and hospitality sector is still down about 16.8% or 2.8 million workers from before the pandemic, and we've also seen a growth in the job openings in this sector in recent months as there is an effort to keep up with the growing demand. the owner of this hilton the told me last weekend they saw last minute bookings jump, so they filled to 70% of their capacity, and they expect that to climb, but they need more staff to keep up with those bookings, otherwise they'll have the start turning guests away as we enter the summer months. a big issue is former workers are just not coming back to work in the hotels again. some say it's because they've moved on to other industries, and others say it's because of the continued unemployment benefits. but in either case, locally here the connecticut lodging association is trying to help hotels in this region by targeting new segments of the population to fill these open positions so hotels can cope their doors open and serve -- keep their doors open and serve a growing travel sector. ainsley: thank yous, lydia. steve: so many businesses are are still suffering from the devastating impacts of lockdown. >> it's been a really tough time for the industry. it's been for a while. we've done everything we can to get ready. >> small businesses in california and what a they've done, it's unthinkable and, to me, it's a humanitarian crisis. >> we're just trying to make a dollar here x it's very difficult. >> i know i can speak for all these other restaurants also, we're done. steve: but don't tell that to the l.a. times which claims lockdowns didn't harm the economy at all. look at that headline right there. to react, fox news contributor and opinion columnist for the hill, joe concha. good morning. >> happy thursday, steve, how we doing? steve: we're going okay, although it's pretty clear the l.a. times is in lapiece, it's not a news story, and opinions are like -- i can't say that. it's like derrieres, everybody has one, we'll put it that way. this is one of the stupid thest things i've ever read because it ignores hard data and numbers. let's look at the numbers, shall we? in california the unemployment is currently at 8.3%. let's compare that to a state that's basically been open for the last year in florida under governor ron desantis where the unemployment rate is 4.7%. so you're with talking about a big shift there. overall, steve, 8 million jobs have been lost since the pandemic began. we haven't gotten those back yet. so to say that covid lockdowns have actually not hurt the economy, particularly in california where a third of the restaurants there have been closed or two-thirds of restaurant workers lost their jobs at one point, it is a profoundly stupid argument to make. steve: no kidding. i'm sure every one of those small business owners that we spoke to and have spoken to would ag
