place de la republique. let's go to richard engel who has the latest in the investigation. richard? >> the investigation right now seems to be focused on three different things. a rented car, or two rented cars, at least one, a severed finger and abandoned passports. these seem to be the clues that are leading investigators right now to a variety of different countries. belgium a main focus. a pretzsch prosecutor said that a getaway car that was discovered in paris with ak-47s in it was rented in belgium. another car that is suspected to have been used in the attack also apparently rented in belgium. that severed finger apparently from one of the suicide bombers by the stadium has been identified as belonging to a french -- believed to have been a french national. so there are different clues coming in right now, and also the passports, maybe they were fake. certainly they were stolen, according to a french minister. one of those passports was issued and was stamped as having gone through greece and later go

kelly cobiella in the streets of paris tonight, in the place de la republique. let's go to the american angle, what investigators know, what it is that intelligence agencies might fear and be looking for. our justice correspondent pete williams standing by in washington with that angle. pete? >> good day. the key to prevention in the u.s., officials say, is good intelligence. good warning that something is being planned. we heard this from the fbi in the run-up to the july 4th holiday where there was a series of arrests of people they thought might be close to taking action. that's the kind of information they need and they say that that is the number one priority right now for the government. the fbi has instructed all of its field offices, all of its agents that monitor terrorism suspects to increase their surveillance. this is an enormously manpower-intensive operation, to try to keep an eye on all the potential suspects out there. the fbi has been quite transparent in saying that they've got terrorism investigations in every state. so that's one part of this

like it was yesterday but you've been talking to some of the people who are out on the place de la republique to chat with some folks, people with their young kids wanting to get back to their regular weekend life here in paris. yes, it is a beautiful day, a little bit chilly but not atypical for this time of year. there was a beautiful artist that had cut up paper hearts and right down there by the subway event was having like a live heart installation, throwing them into the air. kids were chasing red hearts. their families gathering around to take pictures. i spoke with her and she said she wants to show love. she typically cuts butterflies up and uses paperer butterflies at these events but she did hearts today. it was beautiful as these red hearts were flying against the red skyline. these families coming out with their young kids, i spoke with a mom here with her 8-year-old. he's on his bike. they're watching the skateboarders having a lovely sunday afternoon in the park and i said what have you been telling your son? she said, well, he hasn't asked too many questions and then i said, w
