today this is the day for one of those groups, the friends of lafayette park. this is a shining example of how a few neighbors can come together, bring together their friends, and make an incredibly beautiful thing happen in a public open space. this park was renovated with bond dollars, but friends of lafayette park brought in hours and hours of hard work over four years to do visioning and imagining what this park could really look like. they raised over half a million dollars of private fund to augment the bond dollars so that this kind of a playground could be added to this park. it's been that kind of selfless generosity, and hours of giving to the city that is just an incredible humbling experience for us at the parks alliance. let's have another round of applause for carina and lynn and all of the volunteers who have made such an incredible contribution to this effort. they have also, by the way, pushed back onlookers to lafayette park, that is across the street from the white house. dozens of them still gathered sort of watching all of this unfold and really the scene here outside of the white house is that they have brought in extra security. again, just as an extra precaution. but we were here at the white house when this all unfolded. we didn't hear anything. the reporters, the correspondents, the producers here were made aware of us when we looked up at the television screen and saw shots had been fired at the capitol. everyone quite stunned that that would happen. as we've been reporting, this is a city that is shutdown right now. there is already a fair amount of anxiety due to that shutdown, uncertainty. certainly this incident has only raised the uncertainty here in washington, d.c. martin? >> and the actual vehicle, it's being suggested that the driver tried to overcome some of the barricades, those stumps that areally in the ground that prevent vehicles from getting closer to the white house. do you know what side of the white house the veh

and i see pedestrians a few hundred feet back in lafayette park. it appears life is coming relatively back normal here at the white house. >> neil: all right. glad everybody is safe, yourself included. ed henry. this is the footage we're getting, and this is a tourist mecca, going to be a lot of people who caught this on their own video cameras or shot pictures of it. so we're told more is coming and we're going through it. we're told a woman tried to ram the barricade that would be roughly equivalent to the south line side of the how much there are multiple barriers after that one but she did allegedly get as far as trying to pound through the barrier, back away, and still move up toward the capitol. that's a little scary of itself. >> it is, neil, and it's important to determine which 15th street entrance to the white house it was. the one on the northern side is a vehicle trap where the bollards come out of the ground. it's very difficult for you to accidentally turn into that one. you can't get very far. the south 15th street exit is different.
