this is a huge lagoon where there are several hotel properties on the shore of this lagoon aside from magic kingdom itself and also connected through canals to other large bodies of fresh water. it's not that they were just looking in this one area. they had to scan an enormous chunk of land and water, rather, to look for this 2-year-old. sadly, again, as we mentioned at the top of the hour, the saddest news you can imagine, the 2-year-old's body was discovered by officials. now we hope to get some perspective on perhaps what can be done to move forward. disney closed down all of the beaches and it is property to be sure this kind of thing couldn't happen again even though it's a freakish accident, they wanted to make sure that their patrons and guests felt safe and that's the one recourse they could have taken. this press briefing it set to begin at any moment and hopefully we can get clarity on what disney can do moving forward and what the family can do to find closure in this, jake. >> we are awaiting a press conference from the orange county, florida, sheriff to give an update an

the idea this family was, on the edge of this lagoon. it was a lagoon at their hotel.n. how surprising is it that there was an alligator in there? >> oh, my goodness. this is just absolutely gut wrenching, and it is surprising that so close to a highly regulated area that this could happen, but keep in mind, that today there are many, many millions of alligators in florida. the walt disney complex is gigantic. it consists of thousands of acres. a lot of that is remote, inaccessible brush, swamps and riverlets. it's not impossible for a large gator or even a medium sized gator to be under the radar screen and sort of find its way into the scenario. what really surprises me is i'm hearing that this alligator was under six feet. it is very rare for an alligator just a couple of meters in length to attack a human being, but a child is very small. >> so, also, jeff, help people understand what this father was up against. this, you know, is -- you put it any way you want. if you're a parent, this is one of those scenarios where you wonder what you'd do if you were ever in th

there are a lot of alligators in this lagoon. in fact, disney has a wildlife management program to pull gators out of here all the time when they get larger than 4 feet. evidently, they did not pull enough out to save this young man, lane graves, he was in his third trip down here to disney world when the gator grabbed him. to give you a sense of where he was, he was out near the grand floridian hotel. and there he was trying to watch a fireworks show with his family. the gator snatched him when he was wading in about one or two feet of water. and his father tried to fight off that alligator, sustained serious injuries during that fight with the gator. if you take a look closer at that beach, you will see there are no swimming signs. and those are the signs that lane's mother would have seen desperately running down the beach looking out in the black abyss for her son. sadly, he would never come up. he was found 10 to 15 yards away from where he was grabbed, 6 feet or so of murky water. sheriffs say they found an intact body. dur
