nbc's katy tur is at new york's laguardia airport. good evening. >> reporter: good evening, natalie. as you know, the day after christmas is one of the busiest travel days of the year. and now it is one of the most grueling. here at laguardia airport, more than 100 flights have been cancelled, and across new york city area airports, delays can reach nearly three hours long. across the country, much of the same, as the storm is felt from coast to coast. nationwide, more than 1,400 flights cancelled today alone. and there are fears of a ripple effect into another busy holiday weekend. so far, american airlines is suffering the most. 500 flights cancelled, 200 for delta. it's rebooking for free and hopes to be back to normal by tomorrow afternoon. still, if you are headed to the airport tonight, you might want to consider packing a sandwich, or maybe even a pillow. naflt? >> and lots of patience. katy tur at laguardia, thanks so much. >>> if that's not enough, there is another storm picking up steam. kelly cass is at the weather channel

hundreds flights have been cancelled, thousands more have been delayed at laguardia airport now, -- wee julie martin with us. >> reporter: we are getting a break, we have seen snow and a bit of sleet, visibility is one of the big issues and we are down to about a mile or so. not the greatest situation, but one thing helping the flights and the pilots are the winds. the winds are not all that strong. so fortunately the flights have been able to come and go, but we are seeing the delays starting to mount a bit. overall here in new york and new jersey, we have seen 197 flights cancelled and hundreds of delays at the three airports but here at laguardia, not all that bad considering what we experienced a couple of days ago with the last system that came through cancelling thousands of flights and stranding hundreds of pass enerr js. so, at this point, it's a wait and see, we could get a bursts of snow coming through the tri-state area later this evening and the winds will continue to pick up. i expect travel conditions to worsen as the afternoon and night goes on. craig? >> julie martin, b

the weather channel's julie martin is at new york's laguardia airport. is it right now, julie? >> reporter: right now we are getting a bit of a break, craig, but there is more to come with this system. it is just now a little bit south of the new york city metro area. i'm at laguardia, and i can tell you we've seen 50 or so cancellations as of this morning and this afternoon, but more likely to come as the snow really starts to work its way into the city this afternoon and this evening. we're looking to pick up anywhere say one to three inches in manhattan and some of the higher elevations like the hudson valley and you could be looking at anywhere from 6 to 8 inches and cities like boston are going to get socked this evening and we could see anywhere up to a foot of snow in the boston area so certainly travel in and out of logan is not going to be too keen by the time tomorrow morning rolls around if you are trying to get there for the holiday destination for the new year. here in new york it's not as big of a storm as we saw in the past week where we s

julie martin at new york's laguardia airport. >> reporter: well, a very busy day here at the new york airports but not as busy in terms of cancelations fortunately as yesterday. in fact, system wide yesterday we saw about 1,600 flights canceled across the u.s., hundreds of them were here at the new york airports but as of today so far just about 50 or so in and out of laguardia. about the same for jfk and newark. one of the big reasons, the weather is improving. we're still seeing some low ceilings here but the rain has all but moved out of new york city and those winds which have been the big problem have died down in to the teens so that's really no issue for the pilots here. what is still an issue, though, is the fact that so many people are traveling for the holidays, trying to get home from the holidays or get to the next holiday destination for the new year and unfortunately we have another storm system that's going to be working its way in to the northeast in the next couple of days, just in time for the new yore's holiday so, in fact, we could see more stranded travelers over

new york and laguardia, ground stop.a, newark, two and a half hour delays and the predominance and problem here, the winds. philadelphia gusting to 30 miles per hour. new york, 33 miles per hour gusts. so that's really part of the problem because the big cities aren't seeing snow accumulation. they're seeing heavy rain with the wind. here's a snapshot. tral park gusting to 31 miles per hour. cleveland to indy, 20 to 30 mile per hour gusts and new york, the potential 50, 55 mile per hour gusts. so, he's the big picture. the good news though, we've seen things clear out. in illinois, indiana, even into ohio. you see those kind of holes in the radar, the dark white showing where the heaviest snow is. but see those dry pockets now? all that is lifting out. still wet here along the 95 cory r dor, but all the snow, we saw a lot. so in southeastern illinois, 18 inches. bloomfield, indiana, 11. indy, 7.2. paducah, kentucky, 4.6. a lot of strong storms and a lot of snow. but here's where the heaviest snow is. in upstate and weste
