poppy harlow is live at laguardia airport. we have learned i think just one runway has reopened at jfk. is that right? there are flights being able to take off and go? >> that's exactly right. the way you have to look at this is step by step, progress is being made. one runway is open at jfk out of four. we're told they're trying to get a second open shortly. we'll update you in the next hour. overall 2,094 flights in and out of the united states canceled today. you see all those yellow are canceled flights here at laguardia, the bulk of them coming at newark. over 300 at laguardia, over 200 at jfk. about 2300 flights were cancelled in all of yesterday. we're almost to that number already today. it's ticking up literally by the minute. how are they dealing with this? more than 200 pieces it of equipment are on the runways trying to clear them at the major three airports in this area. at the same time, the progress i mentioned at the top is that all of the airports along the northeast are the open in some way or another after w

right here at laguardia airport, 230 flights have been cancelled.o ae hair airports. those are really the main hubs where we are seeing a lot of the issues and really the big problem here is that planes can't make it into the airport. the conditions picked up here in the new york area at around 8:00 p.m. eastern time so we have already seen a lot of cancellations this morning because the planes couldn't get in. the big issue is the visibility. we have about 5 inches of snow but the winds are kicking up that snow. it's a light feathery kind of snow and creating a lot of issues in that regard. the port authority say they are ready for the storm and dispatching over 200 pieces of snow/ice equipment at the airport today so they are doing their best to handle the situation but as you can see on the board behind me here, all of the cancelled flights in the yellow and we expect the board to continue to light up in the yellow as these conditions persist through the morning until 10:00 a.m. eastern time and we will see the ripple effect beyond that. back to

margaret conley is over at laguardia airport in new york city. what's it like there today, margaret? >> reporter: wolf, there are more cancellations at laguardia this morning than yesterday morning at this time. but the good news is that operations are expected to resume back to normal by this afternoon. there are about 4,000 flights that take off from this region every day. 20% of them have been cancelled today. but that is better than yesterday. you can see a lot of people behind me, checking in. a lot more activity here. yesterday at around 5:00, there were no flights taking off around here at all. and all of the airlines are handling this situation differently. delta, for example, they have cut down significantly on air traffic from jfk and laguardia. united, they have cut down on short haul flights. so the reminder from the airlines and from tsa is to check with your airlines before you come to the airport. the airlines are also saying, check online versus social media or calling in, because that's going to be a lot faster. wolf? >> certainl

zain asher is at laguardia.held this media call not too long ago. >> reporter: they wanted to really sort of take the time to explain why this particular winter storm proved so tricky for them. they're saying look, 80% of our flights originate or touch down in new york city or boston. therefore you have a massive winter storm hit the eervast co, it does affect them disproportionately. jfk was closed several hours due to inability to remove snow. they talked about these new faa rules that required pilots to get more rest. they're saying it's not the rules itself that proved so tricky, it was having to implement the rules right in the middle of a winter storm. that was also tricky for them as well. but they did take the steps to preemptively cancel flights because they wanted to protect the crews as well. but the most important thing for them right now is really protecting customer loyalty and winning back those customers. >> what about those customers? what are jetblue passengers being told right now? >> reporter

the carriers suspended operations yesterday at kennedy, laguardia, boston's logan airport. the rule means that pilots and crews will rest, planes are serviced and this can last 17 hours. one man says he is still waiting for the go ahead after more than one canceled flight. >> my first flight was sunday, and now i hope they can solve the problem to be on time in my work. my boss is not going to be very happy about that, you know. >> reporter: about 300 jetblue flights were canceled. we're told that service is picking up today, particularly by 7:00 a.m. with all flights expected to be resuming by at least noon today. reporting live at sfo, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thanks very much. delays are bad for travelers obviously, they are good news for local businesses. motels near sfo say they are enjoying extra guests. the managers say capacity fluctuates with the airport and right now we saw what's going an. the hotels are packed. more guests means more customers at bars and restaurants and using taxi services. in about nine minutes we'll go live to washington, d.c. f

philadelphia international and new york laguardia are the worst affected. 3,000 flights today were cancelled in my submission wide, 2600 delayed. according to one analyst a u.s. airline industry lost 100 million from the previous winter storm. it's too early to tell what this storm will cost the airlines. they plan for 1.4 billion. still, what may be a drag for the airline industry could be rocket fuel for others. bad weather causes a surge for on demand television and home flu deliveries. more americans try to stay home. staying warm comes with its own cost. ohio declared an energy emergency making it the 18th state to issue that declaration. states across the midwest issued warnings about low supplies of tax the the federal government is part of its effort extended transport orders from the last form. the goal is to exped item energy. many people in rural areas depend on propane to heat their homes. supplies of the fuel are low after farmers used up supplies to heat and provide corn crops. one of the states affected includes minnesota. the high temperature averaged zero degrees farenheit.

laguardia was also shut down for a while this morning. it has reopened, but there are flight delays due to the weather. other major eastern parents with flight delays are new york, philadelphia international, washington, dulles and detroit where delays of three hours are reported. and checking bay area airports, here's a live look at sfo where delays and cancellations are affecting travelers returning from the holidays. you see there sfo reports 14 flight cancellations and some flight delays due to the extreme winter weather back east. oakland international reports no delays. and san jose also reports all flights on schedule this morning. life-threatening cold weather is moving into the mid-western states. abc news reporter news has details from chicago where they are expecting yet another foot of snow. >> after days of dealing with intense snow at freezing temperatures, the midwest is about to get right back on the winter roller coaster with temps from iowa out east dropping fast. >> my hair froze this morning so that was shocking. >> an

and if you are travelling out of laguardia, jfk, newark, i think you're in for delays. now here is a look at our snowfall totals map, what we're expecting today. we can see up to a foot of snow in the areas in the darker blue. in the white area we can see from 3 to 6 inches of snow. boston we could see anywhere from 4 to 6 inches. so a very slippery day along i-95. visibilities will also be diminished quite a bit. temperatures already beginning to plummet. take a look at toronto, minus 2 right now. cleveland at 15. and 25 in philadelphia. winds are gusting quite a bit right now across kansas city down towards tulsa, and back into indianapolis where we have had reports of up to two to three inches of snow. it's much colder across the north central plains and midwest, minus 11 right now in minneapolis. and looking at more snow along i-94 in north dakota. be careful out there on the roadways and stay with us throughout the day, because we will be sure to keep you updated. >> thank you very much. and thank you for watching al jazeera america. i'm del walters in new york. . >> reporter: good morning, charlie and norah, this is what it looks like at laguardia airport at this hour. in one line alone hundreds of people are waiting to get to the ticket counter. this scene is being repeated throughout the northeast as travelers try to deal with cancellations from the cold. the deep freeze on the heels of winter weather is hitting air travelers with delays and cancellations for another day. ticket counter lines are getting longer and travelers' patience are getting shorter. >> it's aggravating. >> everyone is waiting for hours. everyone is really frustrated. >> reporter: jetblue will start flying a limited schedule again later this morning after essentially calling it quits in four major northeastern airports at 5:00 last night, stopping all flights in and out of jfk, laguardia, newark and boston's logan. the airline said in a blog post the plan allows the crews to rest for 17 hours and protects the service plane. it goes on to say with planes already full with previously booked holiday travelers, some customers aren't seeing available seats for nearly a week.

margaret connolly is all cozy at laguardia. let's start with you, chad. how bad is it up there? >> reporter: it's warmer than last night by about 15 degrees. at least it seems it. our snow is somewhere between zero and 12 inches. because there's literally no way to figure out what is real snow, what's a drift, what's plowed, what's scoured because i can see the grass here. and then all of a sudden i walk into a drift. that's at least 18 inches. and all of a sudden yesterday the wind blew and this snow, because it is so light, just drifted. something else that happened in the wind too. about three miles south of here at plymouth beach, the waves started rolling, and let me tell you it was like something out of a movie. i walked down there almost at high tide and these waves were crashing onshore over the seawall, onto people that were scrambling away, getting wet, literally. so was our car as we were taking pictures of this. but the waves were coming in, the beaches being eroded, and probably the next storm we talk about is how much there may not be much beach esz left for the su
