a significant number in laguardia airport.e a look at my shoulder at the departure monitor and all of the red indicating a cancellation. 320 cancellations today and that is 55 percent of all flights. also boston airport logan, 69 percent of all flights and newark 33 percent and jfk slightly more than a quarter of all flights have been cancelled today because of the weather. and then there are the delays. 1200 of them system wide. one reason for the delays, we have seen in laguardia airport, they are de- icing aircraft before they can depart. a number of airlines are suspending the change and cancellation fees for flights affected because of the storm. those are virgin, jet blue and united. as for the folks in the airport that we talked with. many anticipated the delays and some cases they got a notification and e-mail from the airport. there is frustration but the passengers seem to be keeping their blood pressure in check. >> at this point i am an experienced traveller. i know that you have to allow some flexibility for delay

i want to go now to laguardia airport. tom, another tough day for air travel. >> yes, it sure is groundhog day. i swear i was just here a few days ago, oh, yeah i was on monday a week ago. we've got 2,700 flights canceled nationwide today. that's on top of 2,500 yesterday. i'll let kevin tibbles go into detail on what's happening in chicago this morning. let me tell you what's happening at other major airports. new york city for example, 55% of flights canceled at newark airport. 33% canceled here at laguardia. by the way, we've got a lot of canceled red on the display screens here especially right now, flights into and out of laguardia right now for the most part are canceled. we'll see what happens later in the day. and we've also got jfk right now with 6%. make that 16% of flights canceled there. we've also got 51% of flights canceled in boston and washington, d.c. down in atlanta, really this is system wide detroit getting hit very hard as well today. the question will be how quickly they can dig out. this is not nearl

today alone here at laguardia. and the lines here behind me are not to get on planes. these are customer assistance lines at american airlines which has had some of the biggest problems getting flights in and out of airports today. we want to show you the board here, give you another look at all those red canceled flights up there. and if the flights can't get in there's no planes to take people out. pretty bad around the area. weather still pretty bad outside. newark airport 600 flights canceled. jfk, 140. conditions aren't expected to get better tonight. and the ripple effect including in arizona, 80,000 people are trying to get home from the super bowl. that's double the normal traffic at the airport there. hundreds of flights were canceled or delays there light night. a bit better today. 27 cancellations as of about an hour ago. 38 delays. but if you have to be stuck somewhere, shannon, better to be stuck in phoenix than in new york because it's 74 and sunny there today. >> absolutely agreed. rick, thank you. w

airports like laguardia seeing more than 50% of flights cancelled.ot better. but the snow is going to continue to fall tonight and early tomorrow morning in boston. so neither the airport or airlines are expecting for operations to be back on track, even tomorrow morning. we have seen about 10% of flights cancel that are leaving boston tomorrow. most of those 6:00 7:00, 8:00, 9:00 in the morning. so the airlines are hedging and saying maybe things won't be too bad and we can operate a normal schedule midday tomorrow. but it's really not a guarantee. so you might want to look at other plans. certainly don't count on getting in and out of there tomorrow. certainly the first half of the day. >> you know, a lot of folks when they listen to you and take every word you say and write it down, what if i don't bother going into the airport. am i not going to be refunded my money or given a free rearranged flight. they get anxious. when are they fair and safe in saying all right i'm not flying, i'm not going to the airport tomorrow? >> yeah, that's a good poin

let's get to jean casaras live at laguardia. jean, how are people handling it?are handling it well. there's a lot of happy travelers today. they're getting their boarding passes going through security. even pilots are ecstatic. my flight's on time one pilot told me. doesn't mean there aren't cancellations. this board, they're really sporadic. greensboro is delayed. there's a lot of on times, but all the flights to montreal are canceled today. nashville is canceled today. also delays to tampa. so it's really hit or miss right here and there is that ripple effect that domino effect because if you were canceled yesterday, then you might not get on a plane today. want to show everybody where the leading cancellations are. laguardia where i am now, that is the leader of the country for cancellations coming in at 85. and then beyond that it's boston logan at 72 chicago o'hare at 27. and i think the major concern with travelers here are those that need to get back to work need to get back to school and some people are paying for a hotel room on that dream vacation and

rick leventhal, of course reporting from his new offices at laguardia airport. well, if these winter storms don't drive up gas prices certainly this will. the united steelworkers union staging strikes at no fewer than nine u.s. refineries. those refineries produce about 10% of just this nation's gasoline, and that could have folks digging deeper at the pump. how much do you think, when all is said and done, phil? >> you know just today, neil, we saw gasoline prices on the new york futures go up 7 cents a gallon and that's up almost 19 cents a gallon from the low that we saw on friday. so even though this hasn't really affected output of gasoline to this point, prices are already reacting. the reason why wholesalers are very nervous because they have contracts to supply gasoline to their gasoline stations, and they have to get gasoline. so, when there's word of a strike, concerns about a disruption in supply, they have to buy quickly, and that's exactly what they did. so, you're going to see this impact from the strike at the pump in very short order. i wouldn't

in laguardia here in new york a line snaking through the airport and tonight, the new concern. how to keep up with the ice and the runways. here's abc's david kerley. >> reporter: talk about groundhog day. from chicago to the northeast, airports socked in again. crews scrambling to stay ahead of the snowfall, and keep runways clear. already this storm has led to more than 6,000 flight cancellations. 4,000 today alone. we talk about the ripple effect. well take a look at phoenix airport, expected to have one of its busiest days as super bowl fans go home. but new englanders are facing canceled flights, stuck. the same problem for a pilot in phoenix. his jet's wheel stuck in the mud. the boards tell the story. canceled which we heard from many passengers in line. >> we booked tomorrow morning. >> reporter: tomorrow morning? you lost a whole day? >> yeah. trying to get out. >> reporter: delayed, cab sellncelled? think you're going to make it? >> no. no, we're not. i know i'm going to spend the night here. >> reporter: the concern? cold air comes in behind today's snow. freezing al

chicago o'hare is the number one airport in the country, but number two, laguardia and newark are neckeck with airport cancellations. this morning it was desolate now the passengers are starting to come to the airport. this is customer assistance. it's not check-in. these are people who have been canceled. i'm hearing horror stories from people who were canceled yesterday, canceled today, they can't get through to a person, and we have a lawsuit student trying to get back to her course and become a lawyer. she's probably one of the most unhappy people of all right now, ashleigh. >> jean i love the fact that you tell people it make lieu clear and pri steen, but there's an army of workers who are clearing the concrete behind you and it will be a dangerous day. can you get me up to date on the scene? >> reporter: if you walk on a piece of concrete that was not cleaned last this, it's going to look like this. that is what our luggage looks like. this is a ten-pound case that i can barely pick up because of the ice accumulating. we'll go to this shot over here. you see what the trees look l

ryan young is in chicago, martin savidge in cleveland and sarah is in laguardia airport in new york. ryan let's begin with you in chicago, first of all, welcome to cnn, your first assignment and you're in the middle of snow. >> reporter: we have been tracking this event since about 3:30 this morning and they're calling it an extreme weather event. and if you look around you can see all this snow that's piled around when we first started, about three inches since then another five to six inches have fallen. they actually believe that up to a foot of snow will fall today and that's more than fell all last month. at the airport, 1,100 flights have been cancelled all over the country. the major thoroughfares have been cleared out. but so far no power has been knocked out. but they are making sure they want to tell everyone to check on their neighbors next door who just walked out on a news conference where they talked about how much effort they're doing to clean the roads. >> in january we had already 2.5 inches of snow in january. today we're getting 12 inches of snow. so we're getting

these flights out of new york's laguardia. and we've ready goals flights from boston and other locations canceled this morning. so it will be tough for people as we see this trickle down effect as flights are canceled in places like boston, we're seeings the impact here. we spoke to one gentleman sleeping here in the airport trying to get to calgary. >> my flight from boston was delayed by about two hours due to the weather. and then i had a plight from washington to toronto which once i landed was canceled. i stayed on one of the benches down there. not very comfortable, but you got to do what you got to do. >> reporter: and let's look at some of the specific numbers in terms of cancellations in our area. here at reagan national airport, 49 flights have been canceled, four delayed. bwi, they have 14 cancellations and 8 delays. dulles 8 cancellations and just a couple of delays. but of course the storm will be with us for the next two days. so this is just the beginning. we could also see more cancellations as the snow continu

we're seeing 280 cancellations out of boston same thick out of laguardia and new york. here on the board, we're seeing cancellations here. we don't have any snow but what we're seeing is this ripple effect. you can see all of the cancellations out of la guardia. i counted 18 listed just right now here on the board at reagan national. and there are many more cancellations througho the day. reagan national 49 flights have been canceled so far.x ds listed. bwi has 14 cancellations. and 8 delays. dulles 11 cancellations and a couple of delays. and of course as the snowstorm starts to really kick in and starts to clobber areas like boston we're expecting even more cancellations to come down range just because they're moving the flights out of the snowy areas, they don't want their planes to get socked in. so cancellations will just continue to stack up. airlines have waived their change fees. so if you have to change your plans, you will not have to pay those fees. but it may be difficult for you to find another flight because there have been so many canc there are not a lot

our national correspondent jason carroll is joining us right now from laguardia airport in new york. what are you hearing, what are you seeing? >> reporter: more than 4,400 flights nationwide canceled so far and that number just seems to keep growing. we have been checking out this board behind me and you just keep seeing that red canceled every time you look at the arrivals and departures. every hour we have been updating our viewers with the numbers from the five cities across the country with the most cancellations, chicago still topping the list at 529, followed by laguardia at 432, followed by newark at 310, boston at 295, where they are having all those problems there, jfk with 145 cancellations there. we have been listening to -- and watching some of the twitter traffic where we heard about one plane that apparently had some problems trying to land but we checked in with port authority. they say all runways are open and operational, safe for flights to take off and to land. the best advice for travelers obviously with all the travel apps out there and weather websites out ther
