so far, no major headaches here at laguardia. a very big change from yesterday when there were so many delays. the rain and fog holding up thousands of flights across the country yesterday. the good news coming out of air travel this year is that airfare for the top 40 domestic flights is 6% lower thr er er this holiday season. also, some relief at the gas pumps this year as well. gas averaging just $2 a gallon, 37 cents less than last year. million people are expected to hit the roads for christmas. for those who are flying so far, things running smoothly here at laguardia. >> given that it's 4:00 in the morning, we thought it would be quicker. it is what it is. >> a little nervous, but i think we're going to make it. exciting because we got to get there, enjoy the beach and the weather. >> reporter: metro north also adding extra service for holiday travelers who are opting for mass transit. flight aware was reporting that there were 6,000 delays across the country yesterday. today reporting just 100. so again, in much better sh

a very scary scene at laguardia airport is hundreds of spirit airlines flight. dan bowens has the story. >> a spirit airlines flight was headed for laguardia to fort lauderdale and was supposed to leave at 11:00 this morning but moments before takeoff passengers noticed smoke coming from the side of the plane and everyone had to get all pretty turned out to be relatively minor mechanical issue that created major delays for hundreds of people this holiday weekend. some people described a chaotic scene people hopping overseas trying to get off the smoky spirit airlines flight. this video posted on line shows people getting their luggage back. zach is one of 225 passengers on board tweeting quote we saw smoke and then got emergency evacuation from spirit airlines at laguardia. no one aboard was hurt an airline spokesman telling fox 5 the sparks started in the ancillary power unit providing electricity to the plane was on all passengers exited safely. the story is a happy ending. after waiting at the gate for four hours passengers were able to reboard the same fligh

passengers at laguardia airport are enjoying an early holiday present. everything is smooth going as we head into the long holiday weekend. bad weather conditions across the country wreaked havoc with flights and caused cancellations. flights were added to ease overbooking today and it's a positive picture. virtually no delays or cancellations. at the ticket counters, the lines are short. if they form, they move quickly. slower than normal, but it's been smooth. >> reporter: what's your traveling experience been like today? >> so far, so good. short line. looking forward to going to miami. >> reporter: whether they were waiting to pick up loved ones arriving or getting ready to take off for holiday destinations, it's been a pleasant experience. >> coming in, all the roads were fairly clear and a little bit in pelham, a little backup. but the major highways were good. parking was easy getting in here. >> reporter: airport staff kept travelers cool in the unusually warm weather with a big fan. others found with the extra time, they could sit down and enjoy

live at laguardia airport, back over to you. steve: so glad i'm not one. that's a lot of hassle. accused of the shooting at roosevelt field mall yesterday. dari: jodi goldberg is live outside the mall with new info on the moments that led up to the shooting. >> reporter: hi. it was chaos in and around the mall. nassau county police telling us they received over 400 911 calls for this incident. that's 30 to 50 times more than they'd see in an hour. oliver lee didn't say a word as he left headquarters to be arraigned. the 21-year-old pleaded not guilty to charges, including robbery, assault and criminal possession and use of a firearm. it was tuesday afternoon when lee walked into the rolex section of torneau inside roosevelt field mall. security intervened when he tried to steal an $18,000 watch. he took out this handgun, firing one shot, hitting a mall employee in the shoulder. >> this is a life and death struggle where it started in the back of the -- very back of the guard interrupted this robbery. >> reporter: the security guard is being hailed a hero.
