steve is joining us from laguardia in queens. i know a lot of folks were stranded yesterday, wanting to get out. they couldn't go anywhere with those white out conditions, one to two feet of snow on the ground. how are things looking today? >> yeah, what a difference a day makes. things are back up and running. they have been since about noon, about lunch time whrx airlines started to resume full service here. but they have a lot of flights to make up from yesterday. the security line here at laguardia, it is long. and there are a lot of frustrated people trying to make their way through right now. and people who are telling me they're pretty used to this frustration. what a month it's been with all of the problems they have been seeing. if you think about first we had omicron during the holiday travel rush, along with the ongoing staff shortages that airlines have continued to see. now, this nor'easter causing this whole new fresh set of problems. you guys mentioned the cancellations. 98% of flights were canceled here from lagua

some cases 10 inches above the previous record, the kennedy airport there in new york, and even laguardias, sitting around 1 inch. satellite perspective, 22,000 miles up looking back down towards the northeastern u.s., you'll notice the entirety of the region here with at least some snow on the ground, again, some of these areas we're talking several feet of snow that came down setting these records that we've seen. but again, that element finally tapering off. want to show you what's happening across portions of florida. freeze alerts, widespread. temperatures here closing in on the freezing categories in the last couple of days. even on monday morning. in miami, florida, temperatures down to 45 degrees. ft. myers into the middle 30s. orlando near the freezing mark as well. really widespread set up when you see 40s in place across parts of the florida keys. that element is what's happening right now. the next element we're following is the forecast to happen in the next couple of days. there is another system on the move. this one a little more complicated. it's not just snow in the fore

in the country right here at reagan national airport also big cancellations at dulles and bwi and laguardia in new york. 1,800 flight cancellations so far across the country, likely the number go up to 10% of cancellations at southwest of its schedule, another 10% at skywest one of the regional operations that operates for delta, american and united. about 13% of flights at jetblue which operates flights up and down the east coast with new york hubs. airlines say that they have seen these omicron related cancellations because of flight crew shortages actually stay about the same for the last few days, although we saw about 5,000 cancellations over the weekend. 15,000 cancellations actually closer to 17,000 cancellations we have seen since christmas eve, so really this has put airlines in a tough spot and a lot of passengers in the lurch. this was going to be a really big day for holiday air travel, jim. the tsa says it had over 2 million people pass through security across the country as everyone begins coming home at once. >> of course, chad, the weather is not helping. 20 million people a

winter weather, a huge factor here in places like laguardia, boston, denver.out sick because they have become either exposed to coronavirus or they have become infected with covid. southwest airlines really leads the pack here, in the number of cancellations, canceling one in every five flights today. its strategy is to try to get more workers to show up, incentivizing flight attendants by offering them double their normal pay if they pick up extra tips. different strategy at alaska airlines, it says it is trimming its schedule, pulling it back, by 10% for the rest of the month. says it needs a price reset on its operation. it canceled about 16% of all of its flights over the last few weeks. th this all amounts to a huge problem for airlines, going on for a couple of weeks, going back two weeks to christmas eve. more than 27,000 flight cancellations nationwide, a silver lining here, wolf, this is typically a time one when flight numbers and passenger levels go down a little bit because we're through the holidays. but still averaging 1.5 million people flying e
