them seriously, when a southwest airlines flight from nashville made a very hard landing at laguardia airport in new york. the nose gear of the boeing 737 collapsed. this evening, we have just learned of new evidence that points to why it happened. bob orr is in washington tonight. bob? >> reporter: well, scott, preliminary information now from the plane's black boxes from flight 345 suggest the pilots may have made a critical mistake just as that plane was landing monday at laguardia, new york, airport. investigators say it seems that the front landing gear of the plane hit the runway before the main landing gear. that's simply not supposed to happen. the force of that impact apparently caused the nose gear to collapse, sending the gear up into the belly of the jetliner and into the electronics bay of the plane. now, the way we understand it is, four seconds before touchdown, the plane was flying properly, the nose was slightly raised. but the flight data recorder and video indicate the nose suddenly dropped and the front gear slammed into the runway. we have to caution you to say that there
