we have miguel marquez standig by at laguardia airport. miguel, let's start with you. what's the latest? >> reporter: the latest it looks like runway 13 is about to get up and running again. the plane as you mentioned has been cleared overnight. they were able to gingerly pick that up using cranes and then move it off to another location on the airport here so that investigators can take a look at all of the mechanics of that plane and figure out what happened to it. right now the machinery is out on the runway itself. the plows and the chemical machines preparing that runway so it can get reopened. laguardia operating on a single runway and most flights getting in and out of here but there are cancellations and delays. it is incredible now that we have the light of day to realize just how close it came to absolute disaster out there. you can see structures along the left side of that runway. the plane ripped about 600 feet of fence away as it came to a grinding halt there. with that fuel leak, this could have burst into flames and been a much, much worse situation on

from this vantage point you can get a look at laguardia airport. nse of how much water surrounds laguardia. it is notorious among pilots as being a difficult place to land. runways are short, you have all that water. and in bad weather, it only gets more difficult. and that will be something that investigators will be looking at as they try to figure out exactly what happened here. they will also look at the weather. the snow has cleared up at this point. but just before the plane skidded off the runway two planes landed safely and said their brakes were okay. passengers on board say the landing for the most part felt normal until about two thirds of the way down the runway when the plane started to skid and they were forced off and they came precariously close to falling into this bay that you see behind me. coming up on the "today" show we'll have a long lens trained on that location to take a look at just how close that was and how important that land berm was from keeping them from going into the water. back to you. >> thank you, stephanie. >> l
