airport in new york. they rival each other clearly for domestic travel. laguardia is the busiest, and as you know it's a difficult airport to come into because you're really coming right over the city there p.and if this -- if this situation is that they have got a tremendous amount of snow and ice buildup there at laguardia compounding with the traffic that they experienced on a regular basis into laguardia that can really complicate matters. they do, however, as you know have very experienced air traffic controllers at la guardia. it's one of the most demanding jobs in the entire system and so atc veterans are on the job. the port authority police and fire rescue personnel, of course, train for this day after day. they are very aware of the situation with laguardia sitting right there on the water. if you've ever flown into or out of laguardia you know that you come right over that body of water. about 0 years ago or so if memory serves you know, a plane went into the water but thankfully we don't have that situation here today. >> yeah, just looking at this visi

our miguel marquez is at laguardia airport. you've been there all morning covering the weather and the flight cancellations and now this, this delta flight 1086 skidding off the runway at laguardia. do you have any information for us at this point. >> reporter: we have a little bit. we're hearing through folks on the ground that there may be a couple of injuries, not bad. this is a flight that was coming in over the water. laguardia, as you know, has runways that stretch out into the water. it landed on that end and ended up all the way on the far side of laguardia. we're at the american terminal. i walked all the way down the length of the terminal looking through the windows to see if we could see the plane. the snow is coming down so heavily that you can't see much of the runways all the way down to the end of the terminals. it's all the way on the ground, not the oceanside or the bay side of laguardia, but on the ground side where this plane has gotten stuck in the snow. there is a wing broken and we understand through some

laguardia is a very difficult airport to land in. talk about the importance of berms here. >> at the air speed that this aircraft is designated to land at about 160 miles an hour it requires about 4500 to 5,000 feet to stop. in contaminated conditions, it may take a little bit more. however, since it was at a very slow speed, the accident occurred somewhere around 4500 feet down the runway. since it was at a very slow speed, we have to credit that with the aircraft not crashing through that berm and ending up in the water. any faster if this happened any sooner, i think it would have been in the water. >> as abby referenced pilots historically have said laguardia is a difficult airport to land at on a beautiful day. obviously these are much more challenging conditions. but why is it that this major american airport is known as difficult to land at? and why can't we do anything to change that? >> there are a number of factors. the runways are considerable here. there are 7,000 feet of runway. however, most modern major international a

we have miguel marquez standig by at laguardia airport. miguel, let's start with you. what's the latest? >> reporter: the latest it looks like runway 13 is about to get up and running again. the plane as you mentioned has been cleared overnight. they were able to gingerly pick that up using cranes and then move it off to another location on the airport here so that investigators can take a look at all of the mechanics of that plane and figure out what happened to it. right now the machinery is out on the runway itself. the plows and the chemical machines preparing that runway so it can get reopened. laguardia operating on a single runway and most flights getting in and out of here but there are cancellations and delays. it is incredible now that we have the light of day to realize just how close it came to absolute disaster out there. you can see structures along the left side of that runway. the plane ripped about 600 feet of fence away as it came to a grinding halt there. with that fuel leak, this could have burst into flames and been a much, much worse situation on

all of the physics here matter because of laguardia airport. look at the length of this runway. you talk about lagardeaguardia airport, you talk about a runway about 7,000 feet long, the one they were aiming for, compared to other runways, newark more than 11,000 feet jfk, more than 14,000 feet. much more room to work with as they come in and try to execute a series of maneuvers with those mechanics you mentioned. their first one is they've got to get that speed down before they hit the asphalt here to about 155 miles per hour. one of the ways they do that is they flare the aircraft as they bring it in. you felt that when you are in a plane where it feels like it leans back as it touches down. that's flaring. there's a particular warning with this plane that you don't want to flare too much because it flies very well and it will want to take off on you again. that's the first step. second step they've got to reverse the thrusters and apply the brakes and try to crank it down to about 70 miles an hour. so you are more than halving your speed in a very short distance on this runway

from this vantage point you can get a look at laguardia airport. nse of how much water surrounds laguardia. it is notorious among pilots as being a difficult place to land. runways are short, you have all that water. and in bad weather, it only gets more difficult. and that will be something that investigators will be looking at as they try to figure out exactly what happened here. they will also look at the weather. the snow has cleared up at this point. but just before the plane skidded off the runway two planes landed safely and said their brakes were okay. passengers on board say the landing for the most part felt normal until about two thirds of the way down the runway when the plane started to skid and they were forced off and they came precariously close to falling into this bay that you see behind me. coming up on the "today" show we'll have a long lens trained on that location to take a look at just how close that was and how important that land berm was from keeping them from going into the water. back to you. >> thank you, stephanie. >> l
