rain and heavy fog blanketed the runways of new york's "laguardia airport." that was also the case at "chicago o'hare"... and no where was worse than atlanta's "hartsfie'd jackson"... where less than one third of flights were on time. at last check, there is only one delay at the "des moines international airport." a des moines officer negligently fired his gun at the airport... it happened inside an office yesterday afternoon. police say 23 year old brady pratt drew his gun from his holster to skills." they say he unknowingly had his finger on the trigger and fired a round... hitting the ceiling. pratt reported the incident to his supervisor... who then notified a lieutenant. disciplinary actions may follow after an investigation. authorities are releasing the dispatch audio from a police involved shooting in chicago... and we've got... asking for a taser for an offender with a knife. the audio comes from october of last year... that's when police say officer jason van dyke shot 16 year old laquan mcdonald 16 times. prosecutors say van dyke stepped from his

we are at laguardia airport where the hectic holiday travel well underway. >> reporter: well christmas time ranks right behind thanksgiving for busiest time to travel. today between new tighter security and a thick layer of fog, getting on a plane isn't getting any easier. many millions of americans are skies during the holidays but friendly doesn't necessarily mean fast. >> stood in that line over there, you see it says ticketing. and after standing for 30 minute, they tell us to get in this line for reticketing. >> reporter: fog is adding a layer of issues at laguardia. the average departure delay is around an hour. arrival delays are closer to an hour and a half. >> kind of slow but you figure it's going to be that way, it's christmas time. >> reporter: and adding to the inconvenience, tighter security after the attacks in paris. the tsa will now be able to direct mandatory body scanner screening meaning fewer passengers will be able to out of what some critics have called a virtual strip search. >> i do the enough travel that i'm like, really, there's not much to see. >> reporter:

fox news's laura engle is standing by at new york's laguardia airport. laura, what are you seeing there? reporter: hey, melissa. we're seeing a lot of people using vouchers to have good meals in the food court. we're at american airlines terminal, terminal b at laguardia. there have been a lot of cancellations, a lot of delays. we got updated numbers. they're cringe worthy stats what is happening. flightaware.com reporting 956 flights were canceled today within into or out of the united states. nearly 4,000 delays. that of course would equal thousands of displaced holiday travelers who had to gut it out at local airports or make other arrangements. one guy i talked to he said he wouldn't get a flight out until january 1st. but they think they have got him handled today. laguardia airport we had wet conditions bringing low visibility in the area. we got out with our cameras with video to show you what it looks like. planes are getting through the mess. so far there have been 50 flight cancellations here, 76 delays at this hub. chicago o'hare international

fox news correspondent laura ingle is live at new york's laguardia airport.p and up and up. they have been getting big are all day long when we have been talking about cancellations and delays. they really are cringe-worthy stats we have to report to you tonight. cancellations topped over 1120 cancelled flights just today. that's being reported by flighted aware.com. that's it is into or out of the united states. right now over 5,000 delays being reported just today alone. here at laguardia airport at new york, we have had these really wet and gray conditions bringing low visibility to the area. we shot this video a few hours ago to show you the planes getting through the mess but so far the cancellations have been creeping um. 50 about two hours ago. now up to 67 flight cancellations. 175 day delays. you have got families temporarily stranded. people trying to rebook their flights. we have got some travelers who expected troubles and packed their patience. others, well, they didn't take the news of a cancelled flight so well. here is their range of reaction.

if you go to laguardia airport, you may be surprised to see this under to the christmas tree, homeless people living at the airport. this is 2:00 a.m., you see a person asleep in a wheelchair people sleeping on window ledge, camped out in sleeping bags and people bathing in the public bathroom, cleaning themselves and their clothing in full public view. >> yeah, i've been saying here for a while. most everybody here is homeless. >> reporter: a 68-year-old man who told us he has been saying here for years and he began talking to me in terminal b. he prefers the airport because he feels safe, pointing out security cameras. >> much safer here than in a shelter. i could have lice, bed bugs. i'm 68, i don't need the hassle. >> reporter: he says the others around him have been here just as long. >> down further, right, and people, they're camped out. i mean, a lot of people. >> reporter: how many people do you think stay here? >> maybe a hundred. >> reporter: at 2:30 a.m., we counted more than 50 people asleep in the food court near tucked away near bathrooms and noticed an overwhelming smel
