. >> reporter: meet laika.atmosphere. >> oh, got it. >> reporter: and is loved by little kids. a dog who, by all accounts, is definitely super. but staff sergeant julian mcdonald says there's something more to laika. something special about his prized companion. >> you can look at her eyes. there's just so much fire there. she's definitely a superhero. she saved my life that night. >> reporter: that night was back in 2012. mcdonald was on his eighth tour overseas and completing a routine mission with his team and laika, a trained military dog, by his side. >> i went up there to assess the situation a little bit more. when i did the guy started shooting. >> reporter: laika was hit. >> he shot about four to six controlled rounds at her. >> reporter: despite her wounds, she bravely continued on, allowing her team to bravely continue their mission. when the team returned, she was rushed into treatment. after multiple surgeries, doctors had to amputate her right arm. she would make a recovery. >> for what laika did
