when you get over to pine lake meadow and pine lake, pine lake is considered a natural area. in 1847, the green family came out here, back then this was kind of an empty canyon and sand dun area. they claimed this property. in 1892. george green who's a second generation built the truckdaro club house. there was a hotel then. it was said this was the place to go if you were weary of the dirty city and the police. there were a couple of gun fights the front door has bullet holes. i don't ever repair them. 1931 stig mond bought the property from the green family. she donated it to the city of san francisco and had a specification, i'm giving it to the city that will be used forever for the enjoyment forever of the people of the city of san francisco. it has ever since. every summer the stern grove association in san francisco rec and parks put on 10 free concerts. usually people come out at 10 in the morning it's a family affair. everybody is on the lawn with picnics and it's free. anybody can come out. it's a great way to spend a sunday. >> goes to 1-2 in the afternoon and run

returning the lakes to good health. however they face a new threat beyond water quality. the diversion, removal of water from the great lakes basin. in recognition that due to national and global trends, the value of fresh water will increase as will the incentive to remove it from the great lakes. the eight states that border the great lakes entered into a compact with each other and two canadian provinces on the use of great lakes water. congress ratified the agreement and was signed into law by president bush in 2008. among the most important provisions of the compact are restrictions of the removal or diversion of water from the great lakes basin. the underlying bowl was to prevent any one state from plundering the fresh water in the great lakes. so it is with great concern that i learned yesterday that the ohio state legislature passed legislation to permission businesses to remove five million gallons of water a day from lake erie. in new york we are about to adopt a far more reasonable limit by requiring a permit

the great lakes initiative is restoring the health and vitality of our great lakes. in my district, the 10th district of illinois, we want to make sure the great lakes are taken care of and protected for future generations. however, the ecosystem is showing signs of serious stress and action is required to restore, rehabilitate and make our great lakes better. as a scout master, i teach the boy scouts the principles of leaving areas better than when we found it. the great lakes restoration is an important avenue to restore our lakes so they can remain the crown jewel. but in order to preserve the great lakes, we need the initiative to help tackle the challenges. first toxic substances are polluting the water and this is helping with cleanup. invasive species are causing ecological stress on the lakes and the initiative institutes a zero tolerance policy so asian carp cannot be established. we must ensure the pollution does not impair water quality. and the initiative works to restore degraded wetlands and wildlife habitats. i along with congressman lipinski introduce
