this is just north of lake merritt. a huge mixed use development project under construction is up in flames. the fire started shortly before 5:00 this morning. you can see many ladder trucks out there. firefighters with their hoses trying to hose down the outside of the structure, nothing left in the middle of that, the flames have taken all of that. what they are trying to do now is protect the structures around this residential business complex here that is on fire. we know at least one house right next to that structure has caught fire. it is on waverly street. we have seen shots of it from chopper 5. the roof had flames coming out of it and when we looked just about a minute ago, we saw smoke but the firefighters were really trying to douse those flames on top of that house. we do know at least 100 to 200 people in the area have been evacuated from their homes. because this started at such an early time in the morning, people were probably woken up by this probably by alarms or trucks coming through with the sirens
