and importance of the lakes. in addition to their majesty, the great lakes apply -- supply 90% of the united states' freshwater supply, 30 million people live in the great lakes basin, and they're all impacted by the quality of our lakes. whether it's a water source, a source of business, recreational opportunity, or the lakes' inherent values and natural wonder. any risk to the great lakes is a significant problem, no matter how you measure that risk. one of the threats facing our lakes is the potential entry of an invasive species. the most pressing which is the threat of asian carp entering the great lakes. asian carp has no natural predators in the lakes. meaning once they enter the great lakes, there's no way to stop their spread. their growth would disrupt the entire ecosystem. in addition to the damage to native wildlife of the lakes, the introduction of asian carp would damage several multibillion dollar industries, including the fishing and boating industries, which support countless jobs and my home --

what this means for the lake and all of us. >> lake tahoe looks beautiful today but thousands of trees in the tahoe basin are dying. >> the forest has been in a lot of stress after five years of drought. >> the tahoe regional planning agency estimates 70,000 trees have died in the last year alone. that's double the number than the year before. >> it's a big wild fire risk so those trees can catch fire and can burn and those fires can spread to other areas of the forest. >> the run off from wildfires in the tahoe basin can sauce damage to the lake. some more study shows troubling trends as well. >> lake tahoe's temperature has actually increased by half a degree each year for the past four years in a row due to the long-term impacts of the previous droughts of the the key concern the persistent lack of water has made the trees surrounding the lake much more vulnerable. >> you have a forest full of trees that are water stressed that are prone to disease, that are prone to beetles and we're seeing trees dying in very high numbers, so 10s of thousand a year. >> passengers on a fishing boat

this is just north of lake merritt. a huge mixed use development project under construction is up in flames. the fire started shortly before 5:00 this morning. you can see many ladder trucks out there. firefighters with their hoses trying to hose down the outside of the structure, nothing left in the middle of that, the flames have taken all of that. what they are trying to do now is protect the structures around this residential business complex here that is on fire. we know at least one house right next to that structure has caught fire. it is on waverly street. we have seen shots of it from chopper 5. the roof had flames coming out of it and when we looked just about a minute ago, we saw smoke but the firefighters were really trying to douse those flames on top of that house. we do know at least 100 to 200 people in the area have been evacuated from their homes. because this started at such an early time in the morning, people were probably woken up by this probably by alarms or trucks coming through with the sirens
