problem is is our lake temperatures are incredibly warm, record warm in fact, we have these lakes in the lower 50s. and you might say, well, that's not that warm we'll compare to the air that's coming over it it is much warmer than that. very cold air. so what that does is that very cold air will pick up the moisture from the warm water, and then it rises as it hits the terrain. and that's what pumps the lake effect snow. so there's nothing really to turn this off until the wind stops, which is why it will continue as we go through the weekend. so we could be looking at snowfall totals in feet off of lake erie and ontario that's the paralyzing part, because it won't stop and it piles up feet on end, and it's coming because we have, again, that very cold air we're looking at 70% of the lower 48 with temperatures at or below freezing. as we go through the rest of the holiday weekend. and i'm talking even as far south as atlanta. you're looking at your overnight lows below freezing as we go through sunday and monday, 29 for a low in dc. how about teens in chicago waking up to 15 degrees

>> the great lakes we are focusing on, not just a day but even into the weekend we will see these lakeg delays in chicago and detroit. the rest of the country looking pretty good with air travel across the west and south, up and down the east coast, you are okay but detroit and chicago are the trouble spots over the next couple of days in the air and on the roads. i-75 and i-90 two spots a slower go for today. as we look at the satellite and radar, all of those lake effect snow showers are ongoing and have been ongoing. something we likely see lasting to the weekend with the winter alert up for millions of people on the downwind parts of the lake. michigan, ohio, pennsylvania, new york, all with those in effect as we gear up for incredible snowfall in a short time. through the next 24 to 36 hours, some white out conditions on the roadways. snowfall rates anywhere from 3 to 4 inches per hour this will be troublesome for people across the area. upper 40s to low-50s for the water temperatures, some places have record-breaking temperatures with no surprise, with those warm lake waters and

up into lake county. upper lake 32. i know there's a couple upper 20s there. healdsburg 35. there's windsor 36. novato. fairfax also sonoma in there. so quite cold for many teens up in the mountains. 20 now for south lake tahoe, 18 in truckee, 26 in reno. you can see the systems to the left. that's the first of what could be many. i think that will start to make some kind of an impact. beginning saturday. more likely sunday, monday. today. sunshine. nice. and then we'll get more clouds. much cooler on the weekend. it looks like rain to me on monday. the european forecast model, what's called the icon of all brought in some rain. some are a little early on monday, some are a little later, but i think it's a lot of the teleconnections are on our side for rain showing up at least starting next week, and i think that will happen. keep it on the sunny side though. today sunny and nice. a little bit of a breeze, but might even be west wind for some 6070 on those temps. changes start saturday. bigger changes sunday monday day. >> all right steve thank you. time now 750. a mixed out

texas and the great lakes. effect snow here going into the next couple of days and into the weekend, including buffalo over the weekend. there could be some pretty good snow totals there from indiana all the way to upstate new york, 30s 40s on the temps a few high clouds, but mainly we've cleared it out of here. everything is done and gone for now, that's for sure. the rain is over for a while. at least ten days, maybe longer. that's the way it's looking. but we have colder lows. but it will be a dry forecast. the best temps, the warmest temps will probably be on the coast, so rain ends, cold, lows mostly sunny, a little northeast breeze and that equals 60s on the temps. but get ready for some really cold lows the next couple of mornings. all right, james torres is here. i think it's gotten better. yes. >> yeah. steve, you say that you can see clearly now the rain is gone. i can see all the obstacles that could be in your way. in fact, let a piece of advice for anyone who might be driving a truck and suv or som

there would be problems driving along the lake there with the lake effect snow bands.ld be pretty heavy and drop that visibility look at all the winter alerts again that are covering here the great lakes and we have lake effect snow warnings in effect east of cleveland, south of buffalo, and then near watertown, too, and upstate new york, because what's happening is, is we have the winds coming in with this arctic air over record warm lakes. so we're able to pick up the moisture with that cold air and just dump all of this snow. now, the weather service is also warning that the snowfall rates could be so turbulent that thundersnow is likely we could have an atmosphere that's like a thunderstorm. with all of that snow, because of just how turbulent it is. so the snow continues as we go into the weekend again in the same spots off of the great lakes. those lake effect snow bands just keep going, and that's where we get feet of snow off of those lakes and the cold temperatures. yeah, i mean, it's six degrees right now in fargo, guys yeah. >> great idea to stay inside and

there's 20 up into lake county, upper lake, and also middletown. 31 in novato.'s plenty of 30s here. look at point reyes 50, but point reyes station is 34. bolinas is 54. fairfax is 34. sonoma is bouncing between 32 and 33. napa 34. healdsburg is in there. so there's plenty frost advisories out. some of the coldest temps seem to be north, but there's plenty south as well. that will take us into about 9:00 or so. that high to the north and that low to the west southwest is triggering an offshore breeze here. and some of that that low has really has no place to go, but it is tapping into some moisture, sending a lot of it into central and southern california and a little bit over us. and what we're looking for here is a little bit of an offshore breeze continues current conditions here. so there is a north northeast breeze and that will continue well into probably tonight. tomorrow. i just don't see that breaking down a lot of 30s here or 50s on the coast. 18 truckee 14 south lake tahoe. mammoth though speaking of is six below a lot of high clouds for us. still th
