salt lake city and across parts of utah today. man, you've got a lot of snow. we had about a foot on the benches. two feet into the higher elevations and we're looking at a good three to six inches easy on the valley floor. things are starting to wind down tonight, but we are expecting more snow to kick up as we head through tuesday and into wednesday. this system is just the first in a series that's going to make its way across the west so expect bad travel weather all across the west, at least through wednesday morning, before things start to improve. now tomorrow, what does it look like? well, we'll be watching the midwest as well. we had hundreds of accidents in minnesota today. we're expecting to see more snow today and freezing rain early tomorrow morning, especially in southern minnesota. places like chicago as well as milwaukee could have problems. where are we expecting the delays? could be 30 to 60 minutes in chicago. detroit and st. louis expecting delays. seattle and portland as well as salt lake city because of that snow and san francisco today was

salt lake city tonight. and this is a camera from salt lake.ing as snow is coming down on howling winds. windchills under 33 below zero here. our temperatures don't look near as cold compared to that. the cold here has settled down over the snow pack which running something like this. north of that area all the way up to the arctic circle, there's snow on the ground. contrasting with warm air, there were 70s and 80s on the gulf coast today. the result are these succession of storms. one of which is coming into the midwest. the second, this weekend and has 23 states under weather advisories. we think the low will settle south and track along this thermal contrast zone while another center moves to the north. it means that the big snows that occur in the upper midwest probably won't be as big as if this were one consolidated system. but we have rain on the way that comes in tomorrow. we could start that off as an ice pellet-freezing rain mix. particularly away from the lake. we had about a 34-degree drop here in chicago. readings are coming back

. >>> in salt lake city, elizabeth smart returns to the witness stand today, this time to be cross examined. >> for the last two days, smart, now 23, has been giving jurors the horrific details of her nine-month ordeal. diana alvear has more. >> reporter: vinita and rob, good morning. we are learning so much more about what elizabeth smart was forced to endure. she took the stand again on tuesday and spoke openly about being assaulted, of having to wear veils and disguises, and even about one close encounter with a police officer that nearly resulted in her rescue. his attorneys say brian david mitchell is mentally ill. on tuesday, elizabeth smart testified otherwise. she told jurors mitchell was planning another abduction. elizabeth watched him pack his bags with the same rope and knife he'd used to kidnap her. he said that he was going to try the same way he kidnapped me, she said, and that he would take her back up into the canyon. the attempt was unsuccessful, as was a later one in san diego. elizabeth calmly explained how mitchell raped her repeatedly, forced her to drink alcohol and s
