[applause] governor herbert: president niederhauser, speaker hughes, members of the legislature, justices of the utah supreme court, utah's first lady, lieutenant governor and mrs. cox, other constitutional officers, and my fellow utahns, it is an honor to address you in this historic state capitol that serves as a symbol of our collective dreams and aspirations. three weeks ago, at our state inauguration, we had the privilege of hearing the mormon tabernacle choir. and i am very pleased to report that in spite of the choir's decision to sing at my inauguration, not one choir member has resigned. [laughter] [applause] you'll remember that the choir performed "climb every mountain." as they sang, i reflected on all the mountains that we must climb and conquer in our personal lives, as a people, and as a state. when i first took office, utah was climbing out of the great recession. recognizing that so many of our challenges required a robust economy, we made economi

we've seen these marches over the weekend and then today in salt lake city.ional organizers of the women's marches told chris hayes last hour that those national organizers are convening themselves tomorrow to plan their next follow-up action after the women's marches. also tomorrow the people organizing using the indivisible guide, they have called their own day of action for tomorrow. as you know, the core idea behind the indivisible guide is to the stay focused on your own representatives and your own senators, to be essentially a constituent activist wherever you live for your own elected officials. so tomorrow's day of action will mean a lot of folks will go to the district offices of their u.s. senators and tell them what they think about the confirmation votes for the new cabinet members. you will see groups of two or three or 15 or one nice person and a dead plant. the idea is to show up, to just be there. so that's one thing to watch for as we try to get a handle on what this is. you will see more people sitting by their lawmaker's potted dead plant

i have just moved to salt lake city in 1994. i was a student at the university of utah. i moved there to go to school. around the time the semester started, i was new, i got my library card from the city library and went over there one day and looked at videos not , dvds. we don't really have those much anymore. this was back in the old day. pbs onhis series from the shelf called "eyes on the prize, the history of the civil rights movement." i checked out the first couple of tapes. the first segment was about the emmett till case. i had never heard of it. this was september of 1994. it just grabbed me immediately, like nothing ever had in my life. within a couple of weeks or months, people were sick of me asking if they had ever heard of emmett till and new anything about it. i was determined to read anything i could find to learn more about it, outside of the video. there was not much. this was 1994. there was a book that i found and i read it. i learned about another one that had come out about the same time. i read these two books and wanted to read more. there was not
