for a lot of people, the big change in lake charles being a 19th century city and lake charles being a 20th century and now a 21st century city was the great fire. and for us the great fire was in 1910. it was on a very, very dry april of 1910. the fire was extremely intense because it was literally burning a city of wood. lake charles was a saw mill town, buildings were made of the cheapest building materials. roofs were made of wood, sidewalks were made of wood, sis they weres were made of wood, houses, churches, everything was made of wood. and in that great fire this culture of wood was absolutely assailed because this very rich pine and cypress had pitch and tars that just made buildings explode into splinters of buildings. and the firestorm which howled in lake charles over the 10 or 15 hours of the fire was here, was such that 15,000 people lost their homes. and the city was rebuilt almost exactly on the ashes of the old town, but it was built with an intense decision to build better and stronger even then. petroleum was found here in a little town called evangeline in 1903, i
