we have a condo that overlooks lake michigan that i consider to be a great place to sit and just look at this beautiful lake and what happens on it whith a drinking a cup of coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening. but, unfortunately, the health of our great lake michigan is threatened every summer when a coal-burning fe ferry boat dumps tons of coal into the lake all summer long. meet the s.s. badger. many people have fond memories of this boat steaming from ludington, michigan. but they need to be reminded of one thing. the s.s. badger is the last coal-fired ferry in the united states and there is reason it's the last one. every year based on the estimates given to us by the company, this boat dumps 650-plus tons of coal ash into lake michigan. 600-plus tons every single year. since 1953, that's the record. well, what does that do to lake michigan? in the 59 years the s.s. badger has been in operation, it has discharged a conservative estimate of 35,400 tons of coal ash into lake michigan. that's enough to coat the entire floor of lake michigan with a layer of ash 2.

it brings hurricane-force winds to lake erie and lake michigan.to a foot of snow in path that goes from denver all the way toward green bay, wisconsin. and then, that storm continues east, right at the wrong time for the holidays. the strongest northwest storm of the season blew in monday, with winds reaching 100 miles per hour. knocking out power lines, bringing down trees and creating blizzard conditions in the washington and oregon cascade mountains. just south of tacoma, washington, a tree fell into this house. puncturing the ceiling of a baby's room and narrowly missing his crib. the baby was unharmed. higher elevations from washington to utah are now feeling the cold air of this winter storm, and expecting up to three feet of snow. 17 states are in winter weather warnings and watches. from the northwest to arizona and all the way into minnesota and wisconsin. by wednesday, the storm is expected to move further east and cover parts of the midwest, from denver to chicago, with 4 to 12 inches of snow. and later in the week, the same storm will

lake michigan is losing water. you can see it on the shorelines. at the same time as we say the oceans are rising. the national climatic data center just reported that october was the 332nd month in a row of above-average global temperatures. that's over 27 years of warming temperatures. is that fair warning? i think it is. during the last decade, the united states has experienced twice as many record high temperatures as record lows and scientists project that record highs will outnumber record lows 20-1 by the year 2050. in may, noaa reported that america has just lived through the hottest 12 months ever recorded. and even before sandy and the droughts this year, the united states was still recovering from extreme weather events of last year. in february last year, chicago was shut down with two feet of snow and 60-mile-an-hour winds when a blizzard hammered the city. it caused 36 deaths, stranded 1,500 people on lake shore drive, which i go back and forth on every day and still find it hard to imagine, 1,500 people stuck on lake shore drive. it
