. >> reporter: in 1950 northwest airlines flight 201 vanished over the skies of lake michigan. dc 4 was en route from large object guard laguardia airport . >> valerie van heest wrote the definitive book of the flight over lake michigan. >> a big search developed the morning of the 24th. the coast guard, the navy were called in. five huge vessels, planes, boats combing the waters of lake michigan looking for debris, but they didn't find anything. >> reporter: an investigation report concluded none of the 55 passengers and three could you members survived, and the aircraft was destroyed. at the time the investigators believe the doomed plane crashed, but the wreckage was never found. for the past ten years van heest and a group of volunteers have searched for the sunken fusela fuselage. >> initially it was a search to solve a historical history, but then it became a search for closure for these family members who are still seeking answers. >> reporter: ken's grandfather was on the flight. >> we would like to understand what happened. in this case an airplane flew into a thunder

that is tonight's number, 93%, how much of lake michigan is covered in ice at this moment. t time a lake was this frozen was 1977. take a look at these satellite images from the past couple of weeks. ted rollens went out to see it and show it to you on a coast guard ice breaker. he is outfront. >> reporter: on board coast guard cutter mobile bay on the first day of what they call the breakout. commander john stone and a crew of 20 have the daunting job of breaking through the near-record thick ice in wisconsin so these ships can start moving after a winter of hibernation. >> getting the shipping industry moving with all the goods we are carrying, coal, iron ore. >> reporter: last year more than 90 million tons of product moved through the great lakes. scheduled to leave this week, if it were a normal year it would get in through green bay. because the ice is so thick it will have to turn around and go south. today's mission is to not only clear a path to lake michigan but also to create a turning basin so the other ships can turn around. >> without us breaking a path out her

lake michigan is next with 93% coverage and lake ontario with 40%. the extensive coverage surprises even long time observers of the lake like joel brammeier with the allinace for the great lakes. >> the idea of the great lakes freezing over entirely is simply something that does not happen. in fact even in lake superior, the last time lake superior froze over was in the mid- nineties. so this is a very special unusual winter. >> reporter: this year the coast guard has been needed to keep the southern shipping lanes open. on this day, the biscayne bay worked to clear a path for a tug trying to push a barge into the ice covered port of indiana at burns harbor, after several passes by the cutter the barge finally made it to dock to deliver a load of scrap iron. but the ice has held up other ships and barges. the lake carriers association reports shipping has dropped 30% this winter. brian larue says his company's barges should be lined up along the pier here in the port of indiana. >> we've got 18 barges waiting to be brought out our terminal all employ

workers in a local tar refinery reported an oily sheen in lake michigan next to the plant.rude oil was released from there dumping oil directly into the great lake. everyone in chicago knows it's not only important for lake michigan to be nice to look at, but important to remain clean enough to drink. it is the source of drinking water for 7 million people there. that half mile spill was eight miles from the water intake. according to initial estimates, 500 gallons of crude oil was spilled. bp had to more than double that estimate saying they spilled upwards of 1600 gallons of oil into the main source of drinking water for the third most populous city in the country. it is big news even though it's not gotten much natural coverage. we continue in ohio. >> these are the first images of the oil spill taken by the epa. those who live near the nature preserve could smell it for days before they saw it. >> it was quite strong this morning. and helicopters start flies over, you know, continually around and around and around. >> first responders tracked the smell and discovered 10

garret is live in chicago along the shore of lake michigan with more. >> reporter: yeah, you can see ill wintertime here in chicago. but the great lakes, they reached their record lows just this last year. but this gradual decline they've been seeing over the last 15 years has led to bigger beaches, which is something a lot of people enjoy when it's a bit warmer. but those lower water levels have also caused a lot of headaches for shippers as they haven't been able to carry quite the same amount of goods that they have in the past. that's as they're going across the great lakes and on to ports around the world. that's an effect we feel, you know, gets passed along, higher costs. but now thanks to the polar vortex and these bitter cold temperatures, things are starting to turn around. just over 93% of the lake's surface was frozen over earlier this month, which is more than twice the annual average. the sheets of ice trapped in water that would normally be lost to evaporation, that boosts the overall water levels. >> ice cover is actually a good thing for the lakes in terms of water le

an unknown amount of oil has spilled into lake michigan from a b-p oil refinery. this is a developing story out of whiting, indiana. a mechanical glitch apparently caused the leak. the refinery has recently increased the amount of canadian crude it processes. environmental groups protested the increase saying it would cause more pollution in the lake. 60% of the lake is frozen over and, the cold temperatures mean the oil has a thicker consistency making it easier to collect. the government issues startling new data on pay day loans. borrowers who use the quick loan storefronts often end up paying more in fees than they originally borrow. the consumer financial protection bureau says more than 80% of loans are also 'rolled over' or extended amounting in even more fees and often trapping borrowers in a cycle of debt. the bureau says it is working to bring needed reform to the industry. quick loan industry representatives say the current model provides a useful service. a top aide to jaime dimon will leave jp morgan. michael cavanagh, the co-ceo of jp- morgan's inves

the bp oil spill in lake michigan is worst than first reported. bp now says 39 barrels of crude oil leaked into the lake last monday. the previous estimate was 18. the leak is linked to bp's relatively new distillation unit built in whiting indiana to process more heavy canadian oil from the tar sands of alberta. lawmakers in illinois want agressive action from bp to prevent additional spill. drug companies may be in for a billion dollar settlement deal. the u-s wants more than a billion dollars from drug companies for paying for patent delays. the federal trade commission alleges drug makers paid for patent delays. the ftc claims it was costsly to consumers because it took longer for less expensive generics to get on the market. brand-name drug companies argue that if they release products before patent-infringement lawsuits are over, they risk paying triple damages. a virus that is killing piglets is driving up prices in the hog market. last week hog futures went limit up on reports the deadly virus spread to at least 27 states in the u.s. gary
