and being from where i am in the first district of michigan, i've got more big water, great lake shoreline than any in the country and the great lakes are truly our life blood and not only of our people in our communities, but also our economies when it comes to the type of industries we have up there. and notwithstanding, that 20% of the world's fresh surface water reside in the great lakes. so, it's something the great lakes is a, i'd say a global resource, definitely a national resource that we need to preserve and make sure it's healthy. a year ago when we came out with the great lakes, the original great lakes cut to zero. the great lakes restoration, working with colleagues we got it back to 300 million in the budget and 90% cut. there are line items in that gli and 10% are spent in such a way that we need more money because they're great stewards and 80% are probably okay and 10% that funding line needs to dry up. but my concern in this budget right now is that with that 90% cut, i'm hopeful to work with the administration and my colleagues and those 22 other districts that border t

lakes? you ever been? >> yes, ma'am. >> we are like the ocean without the salt. it's pretty big. one out of five jobs in michigan comes from the water. it's a very big deal. $16 billion boating industry. $7 billion fishing industry. i could go on and on. that's just michigan. so the idea of taking what is a commitment every year of $300 million to be able to tackle things like asian carp which we are trying to keep out of the lakes and instead put in $30 million, again, we are going to go right back at it again and do our level best to make sure that this doesn't happen. but i don't understand why this major natural resource for our country, where 40 million people get their drinking water, from the entire region, is something that this administration doesn't understand. so we are going to go back at it again and hopefully be able to keep the funding going. something else i wanted to ask you about and that relates to michigan and canada again. we trade everything across a bridge and tunnels and so on except prescription drugs. we are not allowed and we have probably the highest prices for prescription drugs in t

being from where i am in the first district of michigan, i have got more big water, great lake shoreline than any other district in the country. the great lakes are truly or lifeblood. and not only of our people, in our communities, but also our economies when it comes to the type of industries we have up there. and notwithstanding that 20% of the world's fresh surface water reside in the great lakes. so it's something -- the great lakes is a, i would say, a global resource, definitely a national resource that we need to preserve and make sure it's healthy. a year ago, when we came out with the great lakes -- the original great lakes initiative, cut to zero. we got it funded back to $300 million, i see in this budget, concerns me, a 90% cut. there are about 3500 line items in that glri, and i would suggest to you probably 10% of them are being spent in such a way that we need to give them more money because they are great stewards. 80% are probably doing okay and probably 10% that that funding line needs to dry up. my concern in this budget right now is that, with that 90% cut, i am hope
