highway 395 south of lake tahoe has reopened. now, this quake hit just about an hour and 45 minutes ago. exactly 3:49 p.m. it was triggered right here on the california/nevada border. and all those red circles and yellow and orange circles, the cluster of aftershocks that have hit between lake tahoe and mono lake. aftershocks so far. one as high as 4.6 after that 5.9 earthquake hit just before 3:50. and check out our seismograph, you can see the registering on it, very strong earthquake considered moderate, in the last 20 minute, i spoke with one man who lived in coalville near the epicenter. he owns a restaurant there. >> you know, we have had a couple really strong aftershocks, and to be very honest with you, it still feels like things are kind of moving a little bit. you know, and i'm sure it's just me, but it really kind of feels a little liquid, if you know what i mean. i know you people, i know you people have experienced these things. you know, we have little ones over here that you can barely feel. this one was just a ham

this is the main artery coming up from south lake tahoe into lake tahoe. briefly shut down 395 was briefly shut down as crews cleared those boulders. it has since reopened, 395. the quake hit about two hours ago. the exact time, 3:49 p.m. it was centered on the california side of the border. you can see the map here. it's triggered a cluster of aftershocks between lake tahoe and mono lake. so far, more than 40 aftershocks. one as high as 4.6. here's another look at some of the rock slides triggered by this quake. you can see, again, you can see people looking up on the hillslide, all the dust and debris from the falling rocks. one point, 395, the main freeway there, was shut down. >> they were able to reopen in about an hour and a half. and we have had, like you said, a dozen aftershocks. some strong. let's check in with jeff ranieri. what can you tell us about the earthquake and the aftershocks? >> based on the seismic area we're dealing with and the size of the fault lines which are -- it's made of a bunch of smaller different fault lines in that seismic

a lot of smoke from fires around lake tahoe.d this will continue to be an issue not only today but also tomorrow. and that's creating some air quality concerns. here's the satellite today. you can see all of that smoke from numerous fires right here. there is that plume of smoke just stretching through redding over into lake tahoe. for us in the bay area, we have that onshore breeze keeping smoke away from us right now. but again, it is creating issues when we come to air quality. around lake tahoe, unhealthy air quality in a lot of spots because that smoke is just sitting overhead. it's going to stay there tomorrow as well. closer to home with that breeze we're doing a-okay. we have good air quality for most locations this afternoon. as we take a look at the smoke forecast overnight and tomorrow morning, you notice the smoke really is going to stay thick in the same areas it's sitting in right now. so again, tomorrow if you have plans to go to the sierra, just know you will encounter some heavy smoke at times. air quality back

karnow is here with more on the situation with the fires in just looking at a live camera. >> in lake tahoe. there are no big fires burning near the lake, but it is buried under this mookie can hardly see anything there. yes, been oppressive the and across the sierra nevada and much of the places eastward compared to the bay area. as you have that on shore wind here. keeping us nice and clear from all the smoke now somewhat of a concern is that we're seeing the monsoon high pressure has built in back in the california again and rotating around that ridge of high pressure. you get the subtropical moisture beginning to roll on in. and when that comes on through, if you get enough instability in the atmosphere there seeing that today across the sierra guess what, you get more thunderstorms popping up. and of course, the chance of some more lightning strikes and more fires right now. we haven't seen that locally. but there's a chance we could see a lightning strike here. there just isn't much of a trigger to get things going locally. but that's not the case. over the sierra nevada. look at thos

and smoke from the fire is now visible at lake tahoe. this fire was sparked by a lightning strike back on the fourth of july, the largest wildfire in the u. s right now is the bootleg fire in southern oregon near the california state line. so far, almost 409,008 have burned over the last three weeks. it's inching toward 50% containment. the fire has destroyed more than 70 homes. most mountain cabins and thousands more are in the fire's path. thousands of people have been evacuated. shortage of jet fuel and in urgent demand from firefighting aircraft continues to cause problems at airports across the west. the shortage could delay cargo delivery and passenger travel at reno tahoe international airport in the coming days. the need for jet fuel to fight massive wildfires in the pacific northwest has led to departure problems and day long flight delays at airports. here in california. recent flights in and out of fresno yosemite international airport were disrupted by jet fuel shortages blamed on the lack of tanker truck deliveries. now we t

the tamarack fire that's been burning near. >> well, not right near lake tahoe, but north of lake tahoe for almost 3 weeks now. almost 67,000 acres have been destroyed with containment at 45%. that's better news. for more on the conditions surrounding these wildfires chief meteorologist lawrence karnow is here with more warrants. yeah, guys. somebody the kitchen, a bit of a break in some areas are seeing some of that rain. but. >> coming along with that. you've got this monsoon rolling on through and you get the lightning strikes wits of course, can start more fires. so firefighters going to be watching that very closely over the next 24 maybe 36 hours before kind of pulled back moves back toward the 4 corners again. but numerous lightning strikes a fill in the sierra nevada once again, especially the central and southern parts of this year as well. a little rain coming with get some rain out there. some heavier storms rolling on through to go along with that she had moved to carson city of kirkwood up to reno as well. and then you get on the backside of the things trying to settle down

the earthquake, a 5.9 south of lake tahoe, right near the nevada. california line. here's a look at the map and how widely that earthquake was felt. you can see all over the bay area. people reported feeling the shaking received calls from viewers in the north bay. the east bay, the south bay all saying that they felt it even though it was quite some distance and check out this new video just into our newsroom. brett durant's tells us he was driving on interstates 3.95 near coalville. that's just south of lake toll passed the epicenter of the area where the quake was hit. and you can see some dust blowing up billowing up from the sides of the mountain in the background there through the trees. you just make it out. and he there are big boulders that were scattered all over the highway. yeah, a very scary sight. here's a closer look at the same area. this again from brad huge boulders all over interstate 3.95. >> this again is can said is near coalville drivers chine to move their way around those boulders. luckily, none of them hit cars. at least we've not heard of

for those of you what south lake tahoe and tuesday into wednesday.t's when that monsoonal moisture is really going to hang tight over that area. and remember with the beckwourth complex fire recent burn scar areas could actually form into mud and debris flows. if any thunderstorms do form that dew poured huge amounts of rain in short amount of time in dried lightning with those outflow. winds of 50 miles per hour wind gusts or less could spark and spread wildfires in that area if they do start. but fortunately tracking calmer conditions for us to start work week monday, drier, more stable air mass in temperatures cooling down to very seasonal averages mid 60's for downtown san francisco low 70's for oakland in mountain view in fremont, 78 degrees with conquered and livermore in the mid 80's. so we're going to be at or slightly below average. but take a look at that jump in temperatures on tuesday warming up into the mid 90's inland and then on wednesday, we're going to notice drier conditions but still going to remain warm with thursday looking even
