how lake tahoe is preparing for the busy season. >> is kevin cooper with lake tahoe tv. but we're not we won't call you. kevin. i like that. that was in there as kevin. this is coop. he always joins us to talk about what's going on in tahoe with the weather and the ski slopes and how's how's it going? so what's it like where you are how to ski season look, so far this winter. >> start to look really good right now. we just went through 3 major wildfires here in the region. so mother nature's come back. she's really put a damper on those fires were a 100% contained on the caldor predicts a and the tamarac fire. and we're getting ready for the winter season. it's raining right now at lake we're looking at is a significant atmospheric river coming into the region here as the next 72 hours. if you really take a look at this as 8 to 10 inches of moisture packed into this which could lead to the wettest october in recorded history. so we're waiting watching and seeing right now it's 39 degrees here at lake level. but the upper elevations 9, 10,000 feet. they're starting to see

some of the more dramatic water levels drops are being seen in lake tahoe this week. water levels are expected to sink below the basins natural room levels have fallen below the rim 4 times since 2000. 4 and most recently fell in the fall of 2016, there's not much that can be done right now. experts say we just have to wait for another mother nature to bring us some rain really. but the low water level is a sign that more needs to be done in planning your route. >> there is a lot we can do. we we came to to get very serious about limits too late. and so i think we're living in the west. do get droughts and we are getting more extremes in our climate. i think the idea of conservation being a year around and every m if is something that we need to give and will pay a lot more attention to. >> lake tahoe is a huge source of water for many areas. and if the levels do fall below the rim. those areas will be directly impacted as well. taking a live look at lake tahoe as we talk about our 4 zone forecast of you from the hollows boat house here. and you can kind of see where

the parties were happening at santa cruz, lake tahoe and idaho. what do we know about this? october 2020 she rented a home in santa cruz and threw a party for 12 minors. she lined on the rental agreement. there were reports of being extremely intoxicated and trashed the place. carving out parts of the furniture and having a food th code of secrecy. the kids did not tell the cops and she didn't tell her husband. her husband is a tech executive. any comment from him? >> actually we went to their home yesterday and he answered the door. when i asked him about the charges against her all he would say is that it is all untrue. that was the only thing he would comment about. >> it is a tight knit community. did other parents hear about the parties? what is the school saying? >> i talked to a lot of parents and they heard about this woman and the kids just know her as shannon. one parent believes she started to hang out with the kids at fisher middle. they feel it began back there in middle school. they did not know the details about it. but there were stories circulating around th

but on the southern edge of the lake, after the winds have traveled the entire length of lake tahoe, you're going to see a fairly steady stream of somewhat more constant returns on the radar. that's the lake effect snow. relatively warm water temperatures, and cold air going over. same thing that happens in the great lakes in the winter, it happens in a much more localized way for lake tahoe. kind of fascinating. back here at home, this is what 40 mile an hour gusts will do. it's kicked you have enough haze that you can tell. it definitely looks like a windy day from that perspective. if we look at the actual wind speeds, we've got strong offshore winds out here, like 45 mile an hour gusts along the coast, and then also have our strong winds streaming over much of the rest of the entire bay area. but as we get into the evening hours, it's going to lighten up a bit near the coast. it will lighten up for the rest of us, as well. if you're anywhere throughout the bay area, the communities where we all live, the winds get better, but they don't get better in the mountains. it's going to s

friends heading to lake tahoe, check the travel conditions.e you an idea, rounding out, first system passes through sunday. by middle of the week heading into wednesday. north bay will see some of that rain. then a little bit of rain pushed through on thursday, but gets really active heading into friday and next weekend for the entire bay area. we're expecting widespread rain. this going to be our best chance of seeing higher accumulations when it comes to the long-range outlook. your model now, look at this. ten-day rain totals heading into october 25th. finally accumulations. a couple inches. higher elevation areas in the north bay, but, terry, i am so ready for the fall temperatures. bring out the umbrellas, cozy candles, all the good stuff. of course, be safe on the roads because it's going to rain. we yo californians in the rain on the roads. >> i'm from california, by wait. >> drive carefully. oh, the rain will feel nice. thanks a lot. >>> and we have gone to the moon, to mars and now nasa has a successful launch today setting its sights

experts say more algae blooms have appeared in recent years in lake tahoe due to climate change, warmingar complaining that the water coming out of the faucet has a salty taste, according to the chronicle. the north marine water district says people who live near point reyes are impacted. the water district says it happens because two of the three wells that serve the area or near the coast and in recent years they're getting more of what's being called saltwater intrusion from the ocean. water from the third. well which is located away from the coast doesn't have that salty taste. the district is currently building another inland. well, little ultimately provide 100% of the community's water that's expected to come online in the middle of next year. in the meantime, the district says that salty tasting water is safe to drink. the outlook for solving problems with the supply chain is not looking good, and some in the biden administration agree as lauren blanchard reports, lawmakers in washington d. c are trying to address the issue. already store shelves and delivery times showing the im

lake tahoe is back above its natural rim, after rising more than 6 inches in a day. this is only the eighth time since 1910 that arose throughout the month of october, and 125 times more water was flowing through the truckee river. it allowed people to pull out their kayaks and get into the water. the water is brown because of heavy sediment enough due to the rain, and they are taking debris like tree limbs with it. >> we have not had high water for a few years, so the debris piles up and cut loose when we get high water. >> it has come to life again. it's really beautiful to see. at least it is not causing any damage like the last time. >> i don't remember the years of the flood, but they remind me a lot of this, you know. yeah. this is nice. >>> in butte county, lake or oakville rose almost 20 feet in 3 days. the lake dipped to an historic low during the drought, shutting down the power plant for the first time in history. >>> a bit look at the state capital, where state leaders are blaming congress for nearly $20 billion paid in fraudulent and implement benefits.

lake tahoe 33 degrees. cold enough for snow showers. snow of the season coming down across the sierra. lake-effect snow, the warmer waters of lake tahoe and that cold canadian air conditioning piling up the snow near heavenly. notice the pattern. cold air aloft mixing down through northern california, gusty winds all around as the low moves out. wind speeds coming down late tomorrow into wednesday. so notice the areas in purple right now. fast forward another 24 hours, we begin to see those stronger wind gusts come down. red flag warnings should expire by 5:00 tomorrow. for the morning wind sheltered valleys, santa rosa could be waking up to 30s, 40s. our temperatures, you want a nice thick coat for the morning. fashion-wise, almost going into fall and summer-like conditions. numbers in the 70s inland today. the same tomorrow. around the peninsula upper 60s. san francisco 67 downtown tomorrow. north bay temperatures after that chilly start going from the 30s in the morning to 70s for the average. so definitely dress in layers as you send

i bought you started with lake tahoe, i'm going to show you the snow totals of various resorts. check these numbers out, 36 inches of snow at northstar, 33 donner pass, you get the picture, a lot of snow fell over the sierra. i'm sure the resorts are feeling good about that. calm in the bay area right now, there are a couple of sprinkles in the north bay, really isolated. the wind speeds all under 10 miles per hour except san francisco where we have a 10 mile per hour win. that storm kicked up rough serve. we still have a high surf advisory, wins in effect until 8:00 tonight. with heights elevated, but beginning to settle down, as is the rough surf. still risk of rip currents. bear that in mind if you're going to be on the coast. here's a look from san francisco under cloudy skies, 62 degrees in the city, mid 60's in oakland, mountain view, san jose, a 59 at half moon bay. here's the view from the east bay hills. little breaks of the setting sun, these are our current temperatures in the north bay, santa rosa d6, napa 61. 63 at fairfield, concord 64. at the golden gate, barely c

. >> well, a marijuana dispensary is suing the city of south lake tahoe. this dispensary says the city council revoke its cannabis and business license after it did not open on time, but the dispensary perfect union s lt lt blames the delay on the pandemic. now the company was awarded one of the 2 cannabis licenses in november of 2019 as a part of an agreement that gave it a year to open the business and the pandemic prevented them from meeting that deadline the south lake tahoe council voted unanimously in june to revoke the license. the lawsuit accuses the city of a breach of contract. the fcc is making strides in blocking robotexts. the commission is proposing new rules that would make wireless providers block illegal tex the fcc says it has seen roughly 14,000 consumer complaints last year alone regarding unwanted text messages. now that's an increase of nearly a 146% from the year before this year. they have reached about 9800 consumer complaint reporting instances of scam messages such as those claiming to be from the a wireless carrier pushing fake

the storm has brought some good news for lake tahoe. we told you last week how the lake had fallen below its natural rim during the drought. what a difference though an atmospheric river makes, scientists say lake tahoe gained 20 billion gallons of water in this recent storm. it is now back up five inches over its natural rim in just the past 24 hours. historic storm, no doubt a step in the right direction. but will it make any change for the current two year drought? ktvu deborah villalon spoke to some water officials. she joins us live tonight from marin county with the latest death. well. marine gets a little bit of its water from the russian river, but it's three quarters dependent on rainfall, and the system serves every city and moronic separate of otto so every storm matters. from sky foxx, phoenix lake, one of seven reservoirs that provide water for almost 200,000 people in central and southern marin county. as promising as this looks from the air. it sounds even better as runoff flows through the mountain milpitas watershed. it

but the families. >> still ahead here tonight we'll hear from people in lake tahoe who are recovering from the caldor fire as they try to. welcome back. son tourists just in time for ski season. >> here's a live look at highway 50 tonight toward lake tahoe after the devastating caldor fire ripped through the area earlier this year. folks know starting to trickle back in. but for some folks opening back up right now is not an option. proj paulson co reports that many beloved resorts and tourist destinations. we're going to have to stay closed for the foreseeable future. highway 50 is seeing a return of travelers. but some staples remain cloaked. it's pretty sad. the entrance to sierra at tahoe being one of them due to the devastation caused by the caldor fire. the resort could be off limits for some time. one of the kind >> i've been going here my whole life resort. officials say they have been working nonstop to repair the damage. but there are major challenges ahead. august caldor fire which nears full containment destroyed over 1000 structures and was thought to have burned around t

highway 89 at monitor pass south of lake tahoe. >> and highway one 20 near tile.t and near lee vining temperatures are plunging yesterday in the reno area and in the sierra several inches of snow are possible at the higher elevations highways could reopen on saturday after caltrans crews evaluate the conditions. more on the upcoming winter storm. let's check in with our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow. it's nice to say that. i'm just going to say i haven't heard and they say winter storm in a long seems like forever. but yeah, we're going to see it up there. don't go up there in your shorts flip-flops and expect to be real nice. summery weather in the tahoe area over the sierra nevada and back. >> this weekend. in fact, you're seeing some wet roads out there. this is donner summit right now. a little slick out there on the roads are getting some precipitation up there already. and there's more to come. in fact, the snow level is going to be dropping as we head through the night tonight and tomorrow. so you can likely see some snow across some of the higher pea

anyone planning to drive to lake tahoe this weekend should check the caltrans website for the latestitions on highway 50 and interstate 80. caltrans says tioga pass road on the way to the yosemite is now closed. the road officially known as highway 1 20 runs through yosemite all the way over the sierra. the road will be closed until at least late monday after the storm passes. ktvu meteorologist. mark tamayo is here now with a look at where the storm is this our high mark? hi there, christina. yeah, well, the leading rain bands approaching the north bank host line right now, and things really ramp up late tonight into tomorrow morning. typically we're used to talking about some strong storms. and as i mentioned earlier, this is kind of next level for us here in the bay area, so we don't want to be surprised because this will be a long duration. heavy rain event and those numbers. typically we're talking about a quarter of an inch to maybe two inches. look at that range 2 to 9 inches. that is a lot of rain coming down in 24 hours, most of it in 24 hours, and that is a serious concern.

you can see that there is a little bit of tnow that is gathered right around lake tahoe, though it's a wintry mix with some rain and snow that has been seen at those elevations. once you head north of the lake into some higher elevation areas. that's where you'd actually seeing some evening snowfall a view outside at radar right now for the bay area shows are clear conditions up in the sierra nevada. yeah, it's mostly rain, but there is some snow mix higher up. and last night we saw more of the snowfall that is now rainfall on top of it. and that's making for kind of a wet mess up there. i guess i would say, but we rather take that in the dry conditions and the red flag warnings that we have here in the bay area. it would have otherwise been a perfect day had it not been for the strong winds that are whipping across the region, 60 miles per hour. peak wind gusts are very highest of elevations. we do have wind advisories, wind watches for other areas that are lit up in red, but rather in that yellow, both of these remain in effect through the day today, the red flag warnings actually

just before dawn it was still snowing at lake tahoe. this is a view of the lake, taken about 12 hours ago. drivers on highway 50 are being told to put chains on their tires. there are also chain requirements on i-80. some parts of the sierra saw more than two feet of snow from this weekend's storm. it winter storm warning remains in effect for the greater lake tahoe area because of heavy snowfall and gusty winds which have been a problem. warnings will not expire for another few hours. a reporter from the abc station in sacramento is live at sierra and tahoe. how does it look out there? >> check it out behind me. me. just so beautiful up here. of course that comes with a trade-off, and what is that? you have to be prepared. take a look at highway 50. empty at the moment but you see the slushy roads. a dynamic 24 hours off highway 50. chain controls are in effect between myers and twin bridges at the moment. a stretch that was heavily impacted by the caldor fire. this after the pass was already shut down overnight due to mudslides and roc

we just showed you around lake tahoe. that's a lake effect. you know, you talk about chicago in those areas getting lake effect. snow that was lake effect, snow inch and. in uh, the south lake tahoe around kirkwood as well some areas of the four inches, so there's this system as it goes down through the. basin and down towards vegas. you can see that set spinner so that guy is going to move on off and as it gets further from us the pressure gradient weekends and that's what we're looking for. when was closer to us like 12 hours ago eight hours ago. that's when the pressure gradient was the tightest between the high and the low in vegas is definitely getting some activity down there so. the story. the next couple hours will be the winds should gradually and they have been gradually subsiding. they're still going to be still going to be breezy. wind advisor gets dropped. the red flag warning stays up through tomorrow and at that point with less wind than red flag warning won't be quite as robust. so a little bit of good news on that side. we'll

. >>> a report tonight that lake tahoe is falling at an alarming low- level. the chronicle is reporting that the lake's water level is expected to sink below the rim. a dam on the river allows the lake to fill six feet higher than the natural rim. the report says if water levels remain below the rim the lake could become stagnant with no out flow like the salt and sea or mona lake. >>> paul, there could be some hope. tahoe has seen two snowfalls. those two lakes took millions of years to get in that condition. >> no, the worry is you don't want to have any water quality issues with one of the biggest tourist attractions in the state. there is some hope that maybe we will see more rain for the bay area, snow in the higher elevations, it will be farther down the line. take a look at what is happening in the short term. a pair in the upper level. breezy and cool. the winds died down this evening. the storm system making its way through the pacific northwest. sending rain into washington and oregon. dragging a cold front across the bay area with clouds tomorrow. un

the water level at lake tahoe has fallen below its natural rim and environmentalists fear that trend is accelerating. water is no longer flowing from the lake into the truckee river. scientists say. this is the sixth time that the water level has fallen that far since 2000 and four and it's getting more frequent. they're also concerned that climate change means less snow is falling in the mountains, which is critical for california's water supply. okay so we obviously have a storm system coming our way as we head into the weekend, and i thought i would start out since we just talked about lake tahoe, talking about some of the snow that's going to be heading their way. sierra snow coming a little early in the season, which is quite nice, because it means the resorts th. they are under winter storm watch starting sunday night into monday, looking out for 1 to 3 ft of snow that's above 8000 ft. there will certainly be a little bit below that as well. but the bulk of it, there will be pretty high up at elevation, but 123 ft. not bad for october live. look outside here in the bay area, and

the surface of lake tahoe is warm compared to the colder air above it when you get the strong winds, mid air is able to develop into a narrow band of heavier snow showers. we have lake-effect snow happening right now. back here at home the wind is the headline. i showed you the winds for livermore already in the low 40s today with a 30 mile-per-hour wind. if we put some numbers up santa rosa has already been up to 41 and then it will start to calm down for the majority of us. it is going to stay windy in the mountains. we are only in the low 70s right now. here is how things will play out tonight. once we get past sunset, and the winds are call murder. mt. hamilton is still gusting up to near 40. even tomorrow there is still enough wind with the reduced amount of humidity which does it change. tomorrow we will go back down into the mid-40s and everybody else will stay comfortable. it is the low 70s for many locations and as we take a look at the seven-day forecast, we will look at san jose first. you will notice the warming trend with daytime highs into the lower 80s. for the east bay

if you're heading up to lake tahoe, beautiful shot with a little bit of snow.more snow. we have a couple of lingering showers, could see an isolated chance or too, best chance for the north bay. temperatures today remain in the 60s. we have storm ranger scanning. it's going to be a busy weekend for our radar. i want to get you to our daytime highs. we've got rain chances. there is a potential we could see some 70s down in the south bay. our big storm heading into saturday, sunday, monday is going to be that atmospheric river event. highest totals expected for the coastal mountains and the north bay. a lot of rain shadowing could happen especially through the interior valleys. we'll get a wide range of totals from a half an inch to 2 1/2 and even 3, 4, 5 for some areas. this is also expected to bring sierra snow, several inches expected especially for elevations above 7,000 feet. global temperatures have gone up over the years. based on continuing warming of the oceans, the air and the heat, this gives atmospheric rivers more fuel to grow stronger and bigger. so

south lake tahoe a little bit drier. but this atmospheric river going to have a warmer core to it because it is not only tapping into a storm, but it is getting subtropical plumes of moisture out of hawaii. and because of that, not really tracking as high of snow totals specifically at the lake level elevations above 8,000 feet could see upwards of 5 feet of snow. but really it's the lower elevations that's going to notice more rain then snow as i fast forward through sunday morning and sunday afternoon even during the evening hours could see pockets of some pretty heavy downpours as the atmospheric river impacts the sierra, but the one thing we need to watch out for gusty winds as well. there is a winter storm warning going to go into effect starting 5 o'clock sunday evening through monday night wind gust throughout this year. ridgecrest 100 miles per hour less and at the lake level could see gusts upwards of 60 miles per hour or less tease me. we are tracking we possible snow totals at mount rowe summit upwards of 18 i
