he's the flight director for noaa joining me from lakeland, florida. ran an eight-hour mission yesterday through the carolina coast, what did you see? >> hey, ali, we were flying between the whole east coast all the way from florida up through the carolinas, and we did two rings around the storm, dropped a total of 37 of our portable weather instruments around the storm to get the environment in which the storm is embedded to try to fine tune that track and that intensity forecast as it approaches the carolinas. >> we're looking at video from that mission. i'm always fascinated by how you do this, how you fly planes into these hurricanes, but you've seen some of these. you've been doing these for a while. does florence look different to you, and in what ways? >> florence, we had our p3 aircraft a couple of days ago at its point of maximum intensification, what we call rapid intensification, a classic eye. we don't see that every day. an amazingly powerful storm. this storm is defying the odds. we showed dry air entrainment which should have been weaken
