mayor don anderson is the mayor of lakewood, immediately south of lakewood that this terrible accident happened. he warned two weeks ago that some sort of accident with this new high-speed train service was all but inevitable. he called for further safety upgrades beyond what the washington department of transport said it had spent on the track upgrade. we don't know precisely what part of track this train was on. what we do know is this, amtrak 501. this was about 10 minutes late. the last stop before this accident, it was running close to 30 minutes late. it left the new inaugural station at around 7:30, 10 minutes later, 7:40, this terrible crash happened. we know from what we can tell that there is a curve at least very close to the site around the golf course and this overpass over the very busy i-5. that is where the accident happened. you can see one car dangling very clearly from that overpass. flat across the i-5, crouched in another car and behind that overpass, another 3-4 cars on the ground. that sheriff's spokesman gave a rather chilling quote to one of the local tv statio

the town of lakewood's mayor had been vocal at a city council meeting last month, warning of the dangers of a high speed passenger rail. officials were not concerned about derailment but about bringing such a fast moving train near pedestrians and cars, 13 cars went off the tracks. >> the train seemed to go off on its side and then all of a sudden it went dark and started to fly around. >> reporter: investigators said it may take months before they know what caused the accident. i am out here live, you can see the north bound lanes of i-5 are moving but the south bound lanes are shut down and will be shut for the morning commute. >> was a system in place on this stretch of track to automatically slow down the trains? >> reporter: everyone has been talking about that, positive train control and whether or not that was in place to try to preebt a situation like this from happening, the answer is, it was not in place, congress has mandated that this kind of technology to prevent a tragedy like this from happening but the deadline for hen it is put in place has been pushed back. >>> candidat

the mayor of lakewood. as a little town just north of where this derailment happen. this is high-speed service. i don't think you had tested it properly. is talking more about pedestrians and cars being hit. almost more than coincidence that he have this concern. we have the ntsb how did this happen. on his way out to the west coast a team of 20 investigators they will be looking for the black box. how fast was this train traveling. what position was the throttle in. we do know that amtrak late this afternoon admitted that there there is no positive train control. they call it the angel on your shoulder is on the track and he can slow down trains. the train went off the tracks at around 20 to eight in the morning. didn't hit something on the tracks. it was a going too fast. they did a test of these trains. were not talking about japanese and bullet trains and they can do 300 miles per hour. were talking about 79 to 80 miles per hour. these tracks have not been used for speeds like this. that is why they went ahead and allowed at the the service to begin. donald trump
