. >> i go to the pacific university and this question is for lala mooney. give us your memories when you first came to the states when friends would say they don't want to live here anymore. give us your memories when you first came here. >> all right. you are all going to be surprised. i am one of 14 brothers and sisters. i have eight carol and six boys. the first apartment we rented, we would hide and make sure people were being counted. but then america was good, the economy was good. all the people in our church helped us and i learned english and we were able to get ahead. i married an american. i was first in my family to marry an american and my mom used to say you took a risk. my little children, what do you mean a risk? later on the good news is we did real well. my brother became the mayor of miami three times aunt and my son alex got elected to the state senator at age 27 and i am looking at all of you. in a couple years you could all be state senators and at the same time i am torn by thinking if you were in cuba you would have been part of that

our next speaker, lala mooney, is an outspoken activist against the oppression of the cuban government. lala and her family were put into prison in 1961, immediately following the bay of pigs invasion. the family was able to use cade after two months, made their way to the united states and eventually settled in the d.c. area. she now truffles to cuba on a yearly basis to visit her relatives and friends and takes clothing and medicine to the local churches. she has appeared on bbc and has also been covered in publications like the frederick news post and other hispanic publications. she has four children, one of whom, alex mooney is the chairman of the maryland republican party. she's now retired and advised her time between her 13 grand children and dedication to cuba. she earned her bs in psychology from catholic university and a master's in psychology and community counseling from hodes college maryland. our last panelist who will be joining us shortly is former u.s. treasurer and author bay buchanan, whose extensive career in policy analysis campaign and her outspoken offense of th
