joining me mark lamont hail kmbt.hanks for being here. >> my pleasure. >> we talked about stories like climate change having two sides. this is different. this has many many many sides. there are many angles on topics as complex as race arrests. when you're on cable news as you so often are, do you feel like cable news and media fails to relay the complexity of this story? >> no we don't. it's so funny. whenever i'm defending a particular perspective, i'm immediately positioned as being opponent of another perspective. i say, look these protesters have a right to be out in ferguson right now. people say, yes, what about dead cops which is like supporting protesters is supporting shooting cops. it's not either-or. i don't want people to shoot cops and i want people to protest. for example, even in this segment we're framing it as some people talking black youth, others war on police. both people have it wrong. the truth here is there is a war on black youth. we may debate the complexity and depth, may have debates what

joining me again, cnn political commentators ben ferguson and mark lamont hill.ve no place at this university ever. now you see the fraternity hiring a high-profile attorney. what does that say to you about zero-tolerance policy and what sort of argument do you think could be made on their behalf if indeed, that's the route they're going? all we know is he's been retain. >> first of all it shows how tone deaf the alumni and the fraternity members that are a part of this are. you don't go hire an attorney in my opinion where he's known for defending timothy mcveigh which is the oklahoma city bomber when you're in oklahoma. first of all, it just shows you have no taste or class by doing that. second of all, you have to know just to walk away and let things calm down a little bit instead of acting like there's some injustice done against you. if you kicked everybody out of school on that bus, by all means grab an attorney at that point because you can't say everyone on that bus is doing something wrong. but they only kicked out two students. i think the president of

joining me is political commentator ben ferguson and mark lamont. 45% of americans think race relationsnt, 39% think that race relations have actually worsened and you've got 15% that thinks they have improved under this president. let me begin with you, ben. do those numbers surprise you at all? >> not so much. we've had a lot of controversial issues that have come up whether it be trayvon martin george zimmerman, ferguson you had the justice department that many have believed to go after in double jeopardy there was, in fact no wrongdoing and in fact his story held up and there was not any race behind that shooting. when you have things that are that polarizing people tend to go back to their core thinking on issues of race and saying wow, maybe things aren't better. maybe we don't trust each other. maybe there are real black and white differences and we have the unfortunate reality in ferguson missouri. >> the doj report found that the killing of michael brown was not racially motivated. also the report found that there was systemic racism broader, though within the police department
