lance corporal kyle carpenter joins us today. you with us. >> thank you for having me. martha: tell was happened on that day in notch of 2010. >> it was november 21, 2010. myself and a fellow marine best friend over there. we were on top of a roof providing security for marines for a compound we had taken over the previous day. an attack was initiated about it enemy. next thing i remember i woke up five, six weeks later in what is now walter reed national medical center. martha: you say you remember some things about those moments when you almost lost your life. what was that like for you? >> i don't remember anything the moments leading in the up to it and that entire day. the only -- i guess solid memories i have is physically how my body felt after the grenade hit myself and my friend. >> you thought you weren't going to make it, right? >> i was shire was not going to wake up. martha: you talked to them during that moment. what did they tell you about what you said and what their reaction was? >> well, i remember very vividly
