we may use the term natural landscape or cultural landscape. i always make the assertion that all landscapes are both. there is no purely cultural landscape, although downtown manhattan has plants growing places and pigeons flying everywhere and there's a lot of nature in the middle of a city and similarly the most remote pristine-looking wilderness has a lot of cultural overlay, cultural management, et cetera, that's influencing what that place is like. lastly, all landscapes are dynamic. they're always changing. there's no way of holding them still the way we do with a vase in a museum. you can put the ming vase on a shelf and maybe have some nice climate-controlled air and lighting for it and it will just stay pretty much the same for centuries. we can't do that with landscapes. there's no way of holding them still. they're constantly shifting with climatic changes, ecological changes and with cultural and social changes. that's really what i'm interested in looking at. and a prime example is national parks. in the way that we often don't no

and i personally believe that landscaping is, you know, so much more than just aesthetics. it really brings a community together. and robert was just a huge part of that, that work. so over the last year and a half, robert and his team have totally transformed the greenway of the lower great highway removing weeds and replacing them with drought-tolerant native species. and robert actually began his career working for a landscaping company that was one of the first eco-friendly companies in the city. rather than using harmful chemical pesticides, they were among the first to use soaps and horticultural oils. and after his first experience as a landscaper, robert knew that he loved working in horticulture. and so when a job opened up as a gardener for the recreation and parks department, he decided to apply. and today i'm very excited to hear that one of his -- or his son is actually an apprentice gardener over at the public works. so welcome and thank you. i see it runs in the family. so robert has risen through the ranks of the department as a gardener parks section super
