the hat in the ring, and it's still an active squadron, the nerdy 91st fighter squadron based at langley. our most fighter advanced jets, have the same logo. i don't know if you see there, the hat in the ring. this culture will never go away. because top gun is filming a sequel. complex in northern virginia -- then called langley; it is still in langley, virginia. i had not heard from everyone. and i had heard from so many about their respect for him, career people. people who had worked there for years had proposed naming the c.i.a. after him and proposed legislation after him in 1999. today that headquarters has been renamed under that legislation, the george bush center for intelligence. i remember being at the ceremony when him when the naming was changed and just the love and respect that he had from the people at that agency. i remember him telling stories, including stories about why he took the job and how much he respected the people there and the work they did and how in many respects they were on the front lines for all of us. i remember stories being told about him including one i will never forget, which is that directors for years had gone into the c.i.a. and then taken their own private elevator up to their office, which makes sense. it's a big job. george bush wouldn't take that private elevator. he insisted on going on the em

by the way, just to make the point, the cia building in langley is named after george h.w. bush. >> yes, it is. >> he as the aircraft carrier and the cia. >> let me bring in joe watkins. tell us about him personally. he seems to have tremendous love. that's the word for it from the military that served under him, the cia, the officials that served under him. and even the white house staff loved him from what i've been told. >> absolutely. i mean, we were -- we had total allegiance to george h.w. bush. we loved him because he loved us. he was so kind, so thoughtful. chris, you know this. you know when he took you on a tour, you and your parents were there. >> i know all about him, but i want you to tell me. go ahead. >> he did so many things. he was personally nice to me which i'll never forget, but he doesn't get the credit for doing some of the other wonderful things. for instance, tim mcbride, my friend was his special assistance for several years. then he named probably the first african american ever to be special assistant to the president, bruce kaufman who had been a

. >> well when we joined the space task group at langley air force base if virginia, we all sat in this one big office, large steel desk which is the greatest threat to mankind as an officer to get a large steel desk, you hope for a mahogany, not a big metal slaps. we said what do we do now. we have to make this thing flyable. we're all test pilots. so we all picked various areas of concern that we felt we could do the best with. i got in the environmental control system, the suit system. i think deke was on the controls, the flight controls. we all unanimously had one vote, every time we wanted a window in front of us. a window we could look through. the initial version had a little tiny round window down by your right knee and a little tiny round window near your left shoulder and they were half moons that you couldn't see a darn thing. that is what shepherd had to fly because we couldn't change the windows in time. >> that early in the program, did you have any real objective in mind or just fly in space? >> we felt we would put man on the loop. we wanted to replace the chim banzy an

headquarters in langley are actually named for president bush and have been that way for a long time. it was an interesting season when he was the leader of the c.i.a. in the 1970's. there's a lot of -- there was a lot of mistrust between the united states citizens and central intelligence. president bush did something at that time exceptional as the director of central intelligence. he actually provided transparency, a radical idea where he would come to the hill and he would invite members of the house and the senate over to his house and have informal dinners with him to be able to talk about what they're doing. he came to the hill 51 times to be able to testify before the house and the senate, a record that's still unpassed by any director of national intelligence. it's a remarkable record of transparency and of leadership. in 1980, he campaigned for the presidency but lost. but then was tapped by the person he lost to in the primary, a gentleman by the name of ronald reagan to be his vice president. interestingly enough at 50 years old who i am today, the first president that i r

read gina haspel, from what we know, as a statement of the truth that the cia has that motto out in langley, you shall know the truth and the truth will make you free. gina haspel had a good day yesterday telling all those senators the truth as the cia knows it. not about about policy, not about what to do about it, just here is what happened. and wow, what impact. >> so the shocking thing about this to me and to others, i believe, is when jim mattis says there's no smoking gun, when both men, secretary pompeo and secretary mattis know what the cia provides, they provide an assessment. it's not a homicide investigation, per se, where they say david ignatius committed the crime. talk about what the cia provides. >> so what the cia provided was detailed evidence, as i understand it, of the conversations that mohammed bin salman had with his key lieutenant about what was taking place in istanbul and conversations from is tan bull to riyadh, filling riyadh in on what is going on, what happened. the key thing is, the senators wouldn't just accept the kind of -- well, there's no smoking gun, we d

or a navy seal does this, or somebody at langley does that. so i have very specific walls that are around my work or guide posts, if you will, kind of guide rails, and i have to operate in there, i don't get to cheat that stuff because i will hear from people if i get it wrong. >> scott invokes murphy's law. >> a lot. that is something that you will hear from whether it's green berets, whether it's seals, whether it's guys at the unit, you know, if it can go wrong, it will go wrong. you can have the best plan in the world. the minutes the bullets start flying, things change. the mindset of adapt and overcome is big in my novels, that mantra of the seals success is the only option. failure is not an option. you have to think on your feet. that's what's interesting how they select these guys to be in delta force or end up on the seal teams and eventually up at one of the tier one teams. it is interesting. you have to be able to think on your feet, and murphy's law is something they can all quote chapter and verse because something always goes wr
