lanny, thank you so much for making the time for us this morning. for us. i suppose, first of all, you, of course, represented bill clinton in a number of sticky situations when he was president. how does donald trump's trials and tribulations compare to some of the legal difficulties of bill clinton ? so difficulties of bill clinton? so there's obviously some dispute about this statement, but bill clinton faced a political situation involving a relationship with a young woman. >> there was never anything illegal. he was accused of committing perjury. so that was an illegal charge. but he actually told the truth. and he testified before the grand jury. unlike donald trump, who refused grand jury is set up as a jury to determine whether someone should be indicted . he not only should be indicted. he not only agreed to testify , he testified agreed to testify, he testified on national and international live television and told the truth about the relationship, which , of course, was very which, of course, was very embarrassing for him and his family.

lanny davis is a great example of that and you still see him pop up when there is a discussion about scandals and how politicians can survive this. and so, this is more the norm now. it also suggests we have evidence that politicians can find ways out of the scandals, so you have to pick a particular course of action that is useful for you. it is not like it is off the shelf, but it follows certain playbooks. if you can do it correctly, you can survive the scandals for longer. host: time for a couple more calls. the are with professor brandon rottinghaus. it is kim in chicago next. an independent. caller: how would you compare pre-watergate scandals to modern scandals? things like teapot dome or really any earlier scandals you want to name. guest: yeah, it's a really good question. i think the scandals are important because they are formative and how we think about how scandals matter, so teapot dome is a good example of a scandal that did set the stage for how politics and business and the greed of individuals all play together to really shock the system. and so i think that by itse
