apple came out with a new laptop right? new version of the laptop.g and what do you think about it? >> well, this is sort of an interesting time for both of these companies. apple is releasing what some people have sort of called the last apple laptop. that's not to say they'll never make a laptop after this or that they won't continue making a variety of laptop models for years. but the new mac book pro represents the end point in the apple laptop. after this, i think their goal is really focused on portable devices like the tablet. like the iphone. so what they've done is they've really kind of blown it out. they've made a laptop with a much sharper screen than any other device has on the market. they've made a laptop that's for what it is, much thinner than anything else on the market. they've also made a laptop that's pretty expensive. they're asking people to shell out more than $2,000 for a machine that most people don't imagine paying more than $1,000 for. >> bill: i find more and more with the ipad, i use my laptop less and less. and finally

laptops are the number was circulating item out there. in our community, there are still areas where there is no access to technology, so we try to do something about it. we found some efficiencies, making note of the fact that in the budget there are $60,000 earmarked for additional increases to our laptop program. it is available at all of our locations. we are increasing the number of actual laptops available as new locations open. we are also pleased to report we are one of 12 cities nationwide that received a macarthur institute of museum and libraries grant to start planning for a digital media learning lab at the central library. we are thrilled about that but we're also looking at investing dollars in the next two years, $200,000 and $250,000 to have the construction documents ready to go so that we can transform that space in the main library. we look forward to working with you on that. i want to focus on job creation and the employment resources. we are making some concerted efforts to hire youth. we are tripling our investment

if you combine a tablet and laptop, and that's what the windows 8 pro tablet is going to be. it sounds great but the proof is in the pudding of the productivity of keyboard, how really cool the cover looks. and the third thing-- or another thing, would be apps. the number of apps, to pop-- windows r.t. will only run apps, where the full windows 8 will run backwards compatible windows application. previous window tablets didn't always run the apps perfectly. netbooks, which had keyboardes, weren't always that easy to use. >> tom: scott, do you anticipate m ight rosoft to use this as a loss leader, not to make any money off of it? >> possibly, and maybe create a flagship product, something to make everyone else step up. i think the danger is going to be to have this sort of "star wars" cantina of interesting ideas. every one of their eomsystem going to be creating an interesting product-- some convertible laptops. it's going to be hard to keep track. >> tom: an interesting competition among the dells, hewlett packards and otherring. scott stein with us from cnet.com. thanks, sc
