no ferry service between larkspur, san francisco and sausalito. the ticket agents are represented by the inland boats man union upset at the ferry division plan to sell them with automated ticket selling machines. the union says 7 full timers and 4 part-timers will lose their jobs. the bridge district says it's one way to close an $89 million shortfall. >> it's everything from a carpool toll put into place earlier this year for $3 to a multiaxle truck toll increase going into place tomorrow to reducing staff because the machines are more cost- effective and efficient. >> none of the machines work this morning. they all started going down one by one so they weren't accepting debit cards and credit cards and the whole system just crashed. >> reporter: that was a passenger you just heard from. many of them are actually supporting the ticket sellers, one of thousands who will be paying more for the ferry service starting tomorrow when ferries resume because fares are going up 5%. today there are going to be some buses replacing the ferry service going

anne makovec in larkspur. marin county with why the strike has suddenly been called off. she has more. good morning. >> reporter: i just got off the phone with the union spokesman who says, they were thinking about striking so they wanted to let the public know that they were thinking about striking so the public wasn't surprised. then the golden gate bridge district decided to go ahead and call off the service because they didn't want people to be surprised either. so there is confusion between the union and the district, no surprise. we heard of these contract negotiations getting out of control before. in this case it was going to end up in a one-day strike here for golden gate ferry service between larkspur where i'm standing, san francisco, and sausalito all ferry service was going to be cancelled for the day. this morning it turns out that workers showed up for work. so there will be no disruption in service today. certainly a lot of confusion. i spoke with one passenger who was arriving, he actually had not heard about the strikes. so lucky for him he was wondering

we are live at the larkspur ferry terminal with what all this means for commuters. >>reporter: well, for those who know about it, it means they have to stay home. drive. or take a bus. for anyone who arrives at for ri terminal tomorrow morning unaware the district will be doing sweep, occasional sweep through the terminal and shuttling people to the golden gate bridge bus stop and from there they have to make their way. what it means for l commuters beyond that saturday sunday next week well that's a little unclear. 16 ticket agent at the larkspur ferry terminal embarcadero and on the sausolito ferry are due to be replaced with ticket machines we can from tomorrow. the union has been negotiating with the golden gate bridge district about the transition since november 2009. but now at the 11th hour the union says it had no choice but to threaten a one day striking. >> it was very disappointing today that rather than try and resolve the problem, the district took the position to l shut down service for tomorrow. >>reporter: what we think is the rate thing to do which

today in the bay's damian trujillo is live in larkspur with the impacts. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this ferry will be here for the rest of the day. you mentioned those ticket agents, they are on their one-day strike, their contract expired at midnight and they are unhappy over the contract negotiations so they are holding a one-day strike. that means there will be no ferry service as you mentioned, into san francisco from saw is a lee ta or from the larks spur ferry station. it lasts until 10:00 p.m. so the weekend ferry service will resume tomorrow, saturday. but for commuters today the golden gate bus service is adding several buses here and in saucesalito to get the golden ge transit service says it has had good faith negotiations with the union so they are surprised by today's action. we did witness the interaction between one of the workers with the transit service and with a commuter. he asked if he got in the city via the bus service if that bus service was going to bring him back, the worker told him that's a good question, we don't
