i'm larry beil. >> and i'm kristen sze. dan and alma are off tonight. jerry brown has declared a state of emergency after a growing wildfire to close california's border near oregon. really far up north. and flames jumped across i-5 in siskiyou county this afternoon. it broke out at 12:30. it's already burned 12,000 acres. highway patrol officers abandoned a roadblock as flames raced toward them. fire crews from marin county are headed there after battling fires close to home. redding and the fire area are full. firefighters believe their job may get harder battling the county fire as the weekend approaches and the forecast calls for hotter, dryer weather. this map gives you a comparison of how much area the county fire has burned near yolo and napa counties. on the left that is the fire area in red. that will cover from the northern tip of san francisco if it were here in the bay area all the way to belmont now on the peninsula. flames have now charred 88,000 acr acres or 137 square miles. it is 33% contained. 3,400 firefighters are on lines. >> a navy

i'm larry beil. >> and i'm ama daetz. the ride is back in service. o blamed a digital glitch for the problem. leslie brinkley is live at the oakland zoo with the latest. >> reporter: hi, larry and ama. between 2:00 and 2:30 today about 80 people were stuck inside 16 gondolas high up here in the oakland hills. it's windy up here today so some of those folks describe the gondolas as swaying back and forth, back and forth, for about 30 minutes. many of them tweeted about their hng experience up there. as you can see someone at the top said gondola breaks. no one has a clue what to do next. you can see in the photo groups of children stuck at the top of the ride. another person described it as the unexpected. humans stuck in gondola cages. here's a view from sky 7 after the gondolas were basically rebooted and fire engines responded. zoo officials said these 1-year-old gondolas are custom made, swiss made, and it was a digital glitch that automatically shut the system down. some of the trapped and terrified riders called the zoo from their cell phones. >>

. >> i'm larry beil. show you mug shot of john cowell. team coverage this afternoon. is with the family, but we'll vin with vic lee who has more on the suspect. >> reporter: we do not know what cowell's juvenile record is, but it's clear from his adult record that he's been in and out of trouble since he was 18. john lee cowell, just 27 years old, already with a long rap sheet. when he was 18, his criminal record included misdemeanor drug offenses, obstruction of a peace officer, and assault. on the assault charge he was quicked and released on probation. when he was 22, he was convicted of battery. two years later in 2015, another conviction for using drugs. then in 2016, more misdemeanor charges. this time at the target store in contra costa county. cowell was caught shoplifting and carrying drug paraphernalia. scott alonzo says police also found him with this. >> a tear gas canister, i believe he was found with. >> in may 2016, his most serious crime back then, second degree robbery at lucky in el >> the loss prevention officer attempted to confront and detain, and

good afternoon, thanks for joining us, i'm larry beil. >> i'm ama daetz.ppened when a massive storm hit the area last night. emily row joins us live from branson, missouri. >> reporter: we're learning more about the victims tonight. we know this popular tourist attraction, 31 people on board, 11 of them from the same family and of those 11, nine died. new video shows the frightening moments just before the boat capsized. >> we need a water rescue. will be north of the show boat. will be a duck that has capsized. >> taken inside another duck boat out on the lake at the same time. the waves violently rocking the people inside, the wind whipping around at 60 miles an hour. that group made it back to shore. but the other duck boat capsized with 31 people on board. killing 17, including children. the captain made it out alive. >> myself and the first lady, our thoughts and prayers right now with these family members. >> when the boat capsized a thunderstorm warning was in effect. and witnesses say the severe weather was strong and swift. >> debris was flying ev

i'm larry beil. >> and i'm ama daetz. here's the latest on the mendocino complex fire. have burned more than 74,000 acres. seven homes destroyed, along with three other structures, right now, 12,000 more homes are threatened by the fire. and combined, they are 12% contained. >> here's a breakdown of what's really two fires that make up the mendocino complex fire, and they're covering this region in smoke. >> yes, abc 7 news reporter vic lee is live off highway 20 in lakeport. vic? >> well, this is a rest stop at the entrance to lakeport. you can see behind me that thick inversion layer, that's where firefighters stood their ground last night. a thick inversion layer blanketed the hills on the western edge of clear lake above the water's edge. the thick umbrella hid the flames of the mendocino complex fire that already burned 75,000 acres. some residents of a rural community called potter valley had been evacuated. they were allowed in today. but not miguel, who was forced to leave his home saturday. you could see the thick plume of smoke shooting over the mountain near

i'm larry beil. >> i'm kristen sze in for ama daetz. have evacuated. 44,000 acres burned, two firefighters have died fighting the blaze. the official count of buildings destroyed is 65. but that number is expected to rise as neighborhoods like this one are surveyed. and here's a map of where the fire is burning. firefighters are working in brutal, bone dry conditions, temperatures are expected to hit 110 degrees today. right now the fire is 3% contained, and threatening 5,000 homes. >> give you a dramatic look at people driving through the flames last night to get out as quickly as they could. and then when the sun rose this morning, the extent of the devastation really came into focus. look at what's left. dozens and dozens of homes are lost. this is a neighborhood in northwest redding. so many residents left wondering this afternoon what, if anything, they'll return to find. >> abc 7 news reporter laura anthony is live in the devastated town of kezwick next door to redding. >> it's reminiscent of the north bay fires. >>> very ominous

. >> i'm larry beil. the file burned 250 acres.thomas is live in clayton where the evacuations, eric, are still in effect? >> reporter: they are still in effect, and it is still oppressively hot out here. the winds are occasionally gusty. that's a bit of a m,souch today yesterday. that's how things can go. on this house, fire approached on three sides, but firefighters were able to surround it and keep it intact. further up on espara drive up there, that's the one home you were talking about that was completely destroyed, just burned to the ground. and we saw remnants of that. that's where we start. by late this morning this was the last open flame we could find in the hills above clayton fed by gas from a nearby propane tank. we brought it to a firefighter's attention, and it was quickly shut off. most of the work now consists of mopping up. >> firefighters are driving all around the incident, are inside the perimeter of the fire making sure they mop up and completely put the fire out, at least 100 feet from the perimeter of the f
