and i know that the police chief, larry escovel, certainly appreciates it. he will be speaking during the service today along with carmela harris and some clergy and the assistant chief eddie garcia. they're all going to be talking about officer johnson and officer johnson's sister will also be taking the podium to speak to all these officers and explain what kind of man he is. and we have learned from several people what kind of man he is. he is someone who is described as being very brave, someone who always had a smile on his face, approachable. just a very unassuming officer who is very respectful while he was out there on patrol. and here we see that most of the san jose police officers have already filed in. it looks like the cadets are at the end where some of the community service officers as well. of course, i'm looking beyond that. now i can see maybe the communications department is behind them as well. so there are a lot more people that still need to enter the s.a.p. center before they can start the services. all these motorcycles need to be par

chief larry escovel tackled a murder suspect. the suspect was brought in for questioning at police headquarters. while in hand cuffs, the suspect made a run for it and scaled a 20-foot fence. the chief saw it happening and tackled the suspect. we just heard from the chief who said i was just doing my job as any officer would do in a similar situation. he took office in the midst of a domestic abuse scandal. now he's erasing that record. ross mir karimi is getting a fresh start. mark what is the reasoning and what's his plan now? >> you remember back in 2011 on new year's eve when ross grabbed his wife's arm and left a bruise. the wife went to a neighbor to have it photographed. the neighbor called the plisolice. the whole thing spiraled out from there. ross' manhandling of his wife tore his family apart. his wife left for venezuela taking their son with her. >> i miss my son termribly and he misses me. >> reporter: it brought down a firestorm from political opponents and from the mayor's office. today, three years later it took j

inside and you know there are going to be a number of dignitaries talking, including police chief larry escoveljust didn't even have that in them. they just couldn't do it. but the chief talks about what kind of person michael johnson was. he said he was brave and simple in the way that he lived like a spartan. he really didn't have more than he needed. he was approachable and respectful with his community as well as with his force. and the chief said he's going to share a funny story about michael johnson that his wife shared with him. he didn't want to give it away. it's too early but i suspect that might be one of the more poignant moments we hear inside. let's take a listen to the chief talking about the johnson family today. >> well it's not easy. i mean we all know that. not only did he lose his life losing a life in the manner he did, providing service for our citizens, and answering that call. so right now it's the initial stage of grieving obviously, and we want to bury him in a proper manner and after that yes, our men and women, it's a part of the process that we're working with now
