it has a tougher road in the senate. >> joining us is larry gerston. this seems like a long road to go with this bipartisanship idea of the president. we've heard this before. so tell us what you took away from today's meeting and how realistic it is that it's going to be bipartisan. >> jessica, this is going to be a much longer haul than the covid question, the $2 trillion, $1.9 trillion. what the president has to do is jump through not one but two hoops. with covid using reconciliation, he aligned all the democrats. this time he not only has to get out all the democrats ranging from the progressives to moderates like joe manchin, he's got to get enough republicans. it's going to be hard to go with a reconciliation group because a couple democrats aren't happy about that. you have to go through not one but two hoops. call it what you will. there was a lot of pr to it. here i am, i'm trying my best. i want you the world to know it. i want you americans to know it and you republicans and democrats to know it. but today is only the beginning of what's go

to answer that, let's bring in nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston. larry, good morning to you. >> good morning, bigad. >> so how big is this resistance? >> look, it's big. it's not as big as it was, let's say four or five months ago, but the fascinating thing is, you know, there are different groups looking at it one way or another, evangelists, people of color and whatnot, but the biggest difference seems to be a partisan difference, it falls along political party lines. there's a recent poll that we put together from the kaiser family foundation asking people what their intentions are with respect to this virus and look, 79% of the democrats said they had or will take it, go all the way down to republicans and you find that number much lower at 46%. what a difference. if you look at the no side, i'm definitely not going to take it, only 2% say no, but more than a third of republicans say no. that's a massive difference when you're talking about something as basic and what many people think as necessary generally for the entire population. >> so cle

nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston joins us now. hi, larry.ood morning to you. >> good morning, kira. >> is it possible to explain this recent surge in gun violence? >> yes, you know, key remark the interesting thing is it's not recent. it's been with us all along. we've forgotten about it, hard to believe but at least it hasn't received enough attention because of covid, of course, and combine that with the election, these other issues kind of swept off the front page, but if you look deeper at four or more, as we talk about, we've had 147 mass shootings in year, and if you go back even further, looking at 2018, '19 and '20, look at this growth from 336 in 2018 to 614 last year, and we're looking like we're headed toward those numbers again this year. it is massive, massive, massive. >> that is a staggering number, 614. how does california rank in terms of gun violence? >> good news here. the cdc we've heard of that of course, says california ranks seventh in terms of gun safety, that's a nice number, the give fords group says we're fourth an

let's bring in our political analyst larry gerston. larry, where do we stand? in the court of pun opinion, it seems mr. biden is persisting here. what's the case? >> all of this is fabulous as far as his reputation goes, but we've always talked about supply chain, raj. there was a real serious supply chain issue early on when there was no vaccine, and now the question is, since we've opened it up to everyone in the country 16 and over, will the supply be able to keep up? if it does, that's fabulous, but if it doesn't, this could be the kind of boomerang which is the last thing president biden would want right now when it's trying to do other things that are just as important. >> larry, here are the numbers. polls show 30% to 40% of americans right now still do not plan to get vaccinated. that could be a problem regardless of who is in the oval office. >> yeah, there are a couple of big areas here. we know the anti-vaxers, if you want to call them that, come to about 30 million or 40 million people. probably as many as 25% to 30%. about half the trump voters fro

for some perspective on that, nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston joins us.ow about this compared with his predecessor, donald trump? >> yeah. it's higher. it's higher than president trump. of course, president trump had the lowest republican approval rating in memory from the day he started until the day he left. but biden is about 10% higher, give or take. when you look at the fair and you look at the bottom, 34 for biden. 45 for trump. so that says it all. and it tells us that the public really sense as different kind of person in the white house, at least for now. >> mr. biden is behind where barack obama was and behind where george w. bush was. what are the little things that have happened along the way that have given him a bump or two? >> he is behind them. absolutely correct. he has shown certainly more popularity than president trump. what stands out? a couple of things. in terms of successes, the way he pushed through covid-19. that bill with nothing to spare. the margins in the house and the senate. $1.9 trillion in aid. the other thing we note abo
