larry gerston is here.o see you, as always. 2020 election has been a heated topic of conversation for what, almost four years now. what are we missing here when we look at those numbers? >> you got your civics right. we talked about the popular vote versus the electoral vote. >> which a lot of people think we should do away with. >> that's another time. here's the story, if you really drill down, you have seven states here, seven states that made pretty much all the difference. it has a nice map that shows you what's going on. see the blue ones, nevada, arizona, wisconsin, pennsylvania, michigan, north carolina. in those six out of seven, they went to joe biden, about 53, 54 electoral votes. that was the difference. if they went the other way, you would be talking about president trump for real. but that didn't happen this time. only north carolina of those seven wins. these are called swing states, because they can swing either way. that becomes the most important part of the nation's electoral map. >> jus

nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston is here. great to see you, as always. this already, but for our viewers, how unusual is it for a former american president to be running against the incumbent? very unusual. >> second time ever. second time in history. write notes now. in 1884, grover cleveland won the presidency. in 1888, it was harrison, and in 1892, cleveland came back against harrison, a former president, and cleveland won. will it happen this are year? we don't know. this is the second time this has occurred. >> so a lot of people are groaning, you know, on the internet about this rematch. several polls have shown that as much as 70% of americans say they want to see someone else, a different candidate besides biden or trump. so how is it that we have them again, given that statistic? >> kira, i've heard so many times why haven't the democrats chosen this guy? why didn't the republican choose this guy? it's not as if there's a bunch of republicans or democrats who get into a corner and decide who will get the win or the nod. it happens through the pr

i'm joined now by nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston. thanks for joining us. great to see you as always. i'm sure people are sick of hearing about super tuesday, but can -- >> whoa! wait a minute, this is my business. >> i know, i know. you'll be in business forever. can you paint the national picture for us. >> yeah, this is a big day, it really is. 16 states are going to be involved in this whole thing. 16 states, the biggest participation of all the time between january and july or august. california, of course, will have the most delegates. and we wonder what's going to happen here. for example, will president trump be anointed? probably not, not enough delegates. will nikki haley drop out? what about on the democratic side, will joe biden not only secure enough votes? no, not this week, but will he be able to chase away those other democrats who are nipping away at small percentages of his party? so these are the questions we're looking at. things will not necessarily be settled on tuesday, but will have a big end case as to where we're going. >> of cours

nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston joins us. good to see you this morning. things looking? >> good morning, kira. you use the magic numbers, two and two. things are tight in congress. democrats have a two-seat edge in the senate, republicans a two-seat margin in the house. put it together, and it is unbelievable. we do have some things happening. first of all, as we start into the senate, there are four states, four states where democrats are going to have an incredibly hard, uphill battle to win those back. they've got to win all of them, or at least three if they want to keep that lead, that edge in the senate. those are the states, arizona, montana, ohio, west virginia. those are critical states. west virginia is all but gone already. so they have got themselves a battle. remember, it's a two-seat advantage and they're on the verge of losing at least both, maybe more, unless something happens to the democrats in the senate. >> okay. so as you just said, that was a look at the senate. what about the house of representatives? i know the magic number is two

. >> joining us now to break it down is political analyst larry gerston. larry, thanks for joining us. let's talk first about these returns. there were three top democrats, one top republican on the ballot. a democrat and republican now we know facing off in november. given california's deep blue state status, what do you think really propelled garvey to the top over two congresswomen, katie porter and barbara lee? >> good morning. he can thank garvey and adam schiff, because he decided to make it a point to do whatever he could to run against garvey in november, rather than someone like katie porter. he thought, adam schiff did, that if he runs against garvey with california's 2-1 democratic registration edge, that schiff would have a much better chance of knocking off garvey in november, rather than going against katie porter, a progressive democrat with a lot of support of her own. >> i know we talked about this this morning. you said garvey's win could have a bigger implication for republicans in november at the general election. why do you say that? >>

joining us now to discuss that ruling, our political analyst larry gerston. good morning to you, larry. this was a unanimous decision, so it seems like the supreme court was trying to send a message. >> good morning, kris and marcus. yes, the supreme court was sending a message. the idea is somewhat like the way the president himself said. this is not the kind of thing for a state to do. mind you, if this was a state office, okay. but when you're talking about a state trying to prevent a federal office, running for a federal office from the ballot, that's another story. pretty simple definition in summary of the 14th amendment section 3. i think just about everybody who knows something about this expected a decision. the last thing the court wants to do is give the impression that there's some disagreement on something as basic as this. >> larry, since we're talking about the supreme court, they're also set to decide just next month where trump can actually be prosecuted on those charges when he interfered with the 2020 election. do you think the election deni
