our political analyst, larry gerston, joins us now. larry, we have many natural disasters, fr hurricanes to flooding. we've had wildfires in california before. how does this process work in the country when a state needs assistance? yeah, janelle it's terrible. of course, it's a two pronged process when you've got a natural disaster. okay. first of all, the president gets asked for fema help. the federal emergency management agency, right. and immediately what happens is there's $700 per person for little incidental things just to get through. there's firefighting equipment covered. there's bulldozers and other things like that covered. and also temporary occupancy, temporary shelter for people so that, you know, they can get through the next few days. that's all they're talking about right now, the next few days. so that's part one. and that's pretty pro forma if you will. not too many problems. and all things considered it's not that costly. okay. that gets the ball rolling. this is all short term. what about long term. the extensive

nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston is here. great to see you as always.a sense of where trump wants to take the country, perhaps versus his first term. you know, kira, we've heard a lot of descriptions about donald trump, but one i think that we overlook so often is he is unconvtional. he is out of the box in terms of the way most presidents operate. and people love that about him. a lot of them do, and that's probably why he's there. so here we go down the foreign policy trail, so to speak. and if you remember, during t first term, trump used his america first policy. what was tt about? well, he withdrew the united states from so many obligations the paris climate accord, the world health organization. he even worked out an agreement at that time to withdraw from iran and nuclear, nuclear, nuclear arms development program. he got out of that stuff. so he took the united states out of so many obligations around the world because he talked about america first. but now now he's going in a different direction at the same time. he's going in two directions at

joining us now to talk about all of this is nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston. larry, always a pleasure to talk to you. happy new year to you as well. all right. so let's talk about what's happening today. democratic leaders say there's no threats of violence in washington today. although we know that security is said to be very, very tight there. do you think that this is going to be commonplace? obviously, we'll never forget what happened january 6th, four years ago. well, good morning to you, laura, and happy new year to you, kristen. and folks down there at the station. look, this is going to be a fairly normal day as normal goes in washington. and it helps. i think that you've got a few inches of snow blanketing the area. that will put a damper on anybody who might have thought about doing anything, but we don't have that problem this year. we don't have that problem simply because trump won. therefore, all the folks associated with him who might have thought about doing anything certainly have no reason to do it because he won. so we really won't know what'

nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston joins us. great to see you. happy new year. to you. this is a very personal question, and it seems more unsettled than ever. kira this is an issue not about to go away. you mentioned it 2022. that's when the infamous i guess for many, dobbs decision came to be from the supreme court. but since then we now have 20 states, 20 states that have either banned abortion altogether or severely restricted it to a time period less than what we had with roe versus wade. 20 states now, in those 20 states, mind you, we've got 40% of the women in the united states living there. but but more ironically than that, 67%, two thirds of the population in those 20 states supports a woman's right to choose. despite all these laws. it's an incredible disconnect, if you will. and so what are the chances of, say, hypothetically, congress stepping in to sort of bring some, some order, some clarity to the state by state rules? although i know that was the whole purpose of undoing the decision, as president elect trump always says, he wants to leave it to

our political analyst, larry gerston, talks about the return to normalcy today. and if we could ever see something play out again like we did four years ago. canadian prime minister justin trudeau is resigning as the leader of canada's ruling party. trudeau announced he was stepping down from the liberal party today, but will stay on his prime minister as prime minister in the meantime. troubles began for trudeau after the country's financial minister resigned a few weeks ago, all seeming to come from differences on trade policies during president elect trump's administration and after that, support for both trudeau and the liberal party itself began to decline. and now the opposition conservative party has more than 20% lead. a new prime minister and leader of the liberal party will carry its values and ideals into that next election. the government will still, and the cabinet will still be very much focused on doing the job that canadians elected us to do in 2021. trudeau says the canadian parliament will be on hold until march 24th, when parliament can conduct

joining us now is our political analyst larry gerston. this is interesting here. it's fascinating what we're dealing with the fires and then the information about the fires. why is it so important for the governor to spend time and resources to do this? can he just let it go? no, he can't let it go. he's the governor of the largest state. that right there that says something. he's got microscope. he's under a big microscope with really tens of millions of americans watching to see. and a lot of concern when you get to something like this, a major event, a disaster, how is it going to be managed? that's when we really understand what a person is about. when things are easy, that's fine. but when they're bad, when they're, you know, upsetting, that's that's when the pressure grows. how is newsom going to managet? the problem is, you know, this is a disaster largely out of his hands because it's done by nature. so what he has to do is be reactive rather than proactive. well, he's sit down. at some point with president trump. he'll be president in a week from now and

political analyst larry gerston wonders what the next certification in 2029 will look like. will it be like today or four years ago? that was the most serious event with the potential of disrupting american democracy since the civil war. and it's amazing to me how quickly that's disappeared into the annals of history. ian cull nbc, bay area news. well, today was an inauguration day in oakland, kind of sort of. the new city council was sworn in along with a new city attorney. anand because of a recall, a new interim mayor was sworn in as well. newly appointed council president kevin jenkins will now serve as oakland's interim mayor. but in an unexpected switch, council member noel gayo will now take over as council president. the council also voted to appoint outgoing at large council member rebecca kaplan to serve as interim council member for district two. a lot of seats moving around here. that seat is being vacated by nikki fortunato bas, who was elected to the county board of supervisors. you're following me? okay. three new council members also sworn in. they will face
