tonight, oakland city council president larry reed opened the doors to the east oakland sports centera dream he has had for the past 30 years has become a reality. >> the place for the residents of the city to go at, and enjoy a quality of life that they've not been able to enjoy. >> reporter: a lot of times people don't think that cities like oakland can have facilities like this. and i agree with larry. we want our kids to have what the kids in the suburbs have. >> reporter: with the help of measures bd and ww, and redevelopment funds. >> you see what it means to so many people. >> reporter: it has an indoor swimming pool, and slide, dance and fitness rooms, even karate. that's only the beginning. in phase two, they want to build new tennis courts, a new pool, soccer fields, even a new baseball field. that's going to take a whole lot more money. right now, the facility is open seven days a week, but that might not last. >> like proposed budgets, we'll see at the end of the summer we may have to cut back some of the months. >> reporter: budget talks are far from the minds of these ki
