with me now is larry sabato, the director of the center of politics at the university of virginia. larry, thanks so much for joining us. what is president jimmy carter's legacy, in your view? and you see pieces of his work in the democratic party today? >> well, absolutely. he tried to move the party more toward the center, and he succeeded in 1976, which is one way he won a relatively narrow victory over the incumbent president, gerald ford. uh, of course, what happens is when you do that, there's a counter revolution within the democratic party, which i think democrats are going to experience again. uh, now, when you move it to the center, the left gets upset. >> in carter's case, it was senator ted kennedy from massachusetts who challenged him in the primaries and was one reason, one of several, uh, as to why jimmy carter was not reelected. >> but, wolf, to me, the important point is jimmy carter is often called the best ex president. that is, his ex presidency was terrific. >> it was much better than his presidency. >> well, that's half right. he had a terrific presidency. he al

let's discuss now with the director of the university of virginia center for politics, larry sabato. y, that is a big story that this report may actually be made public despite some of the concerns that were expressed by our previous guest, congressman tim burchett of tennessee. i don't i don't think all of the ethics reports on every congressman from here to to timbuktu is going to be released, but this one, it looks like will be. what is your reaction to that? >> well, i believe in transparency and i think probably it's a good thing, although we'd all say it's much less important than it would have been had he still been the nominee for attorney general, which is a very powerful post. he's not even in congress. he's going to be host of a tv show on some other network. you know, that's fine, but i don't think it's i think it will make for interesting reading, but the readership will be limited and what do you make of president elect trump's continued attacks on members of the january 6th committee? >> he's going after liz cheney now saying on truth social that cheney could be in a lo

well, earlier i spoke with larry sabato the director of the university of virginia center for politics, on the political implications of biden's decision. >> well for joe biden, he's 82, and i don't think he's going to be running for anything else. that's just my guess. so for him, the political implications are zero for the democratic party, though, it's not very helpful. now, i think we can all see the reasons why this father would pardon this son. having said that though, he's created a situation where he and also his wife said repeatedly that a pardon would not be issued for hunter, and yet that's precisely what's happened. no one's shocked, but it does contradict what he said it would have been politically unwise for him to indicate prior to the election that such a pardon would be forthcoming for for democrats. it makes it easier for trump to explain away any of probably the many pardons that he has in mind when he takes office. january 20th, including many of the insurrectionists from january six, 2021. >> and so republicans are, of course already responding to this. and tom cot
