but then this lawrence wright book -- he writes this book, and that led you to this. how did that come about? >> well, larryd on this idea of the prison of belief. the idea that -- scientologists, but in a way all of us -- can get lost in a bland faith, in a belief system and do the most appalling things. so that idea was interesting. and also for scientology, in particular, it's kind of a religion that they won't let you out of. it's the prison religion. it's like the hotel california. you can check out anytime you want. but you can -- you can never leave. >> seth: right. you can never leave. what do you think explains our collective interest about scientology? there have been cults. there have been weird religious sects before. what is it that draws us to this, makes it an interesting thing for all of us? >> well there's a celebrity component. and i think l. ron hubbard, the founder of scientology, knew that. he knew that the real american religion is celebrity. and so there are key celebrities like tom cruise and john travolta who are associated. but i also think scientology's reputation precedes them, i
