marshal was wounded and a court security killed along with the gunman in the las vegas shoot-out. we go to cnn's senior white house correspondent ed henry who was in vegas today on his way home from covering the president in hawaii. what were you doing in vegas? >> reporter: well, i can't give you all the details, larry. it stays in vegas, i guess. in all seriousness, i was coming to get a little rest and relaxation, obviously, and bottom line is that it was anything but. there was such a dramatic scene. i was driving near this federal building right behind me, and all of a sudden i heard a man in plain clothes who i saw had a 9 millimeter gun shouting everybody get down. i didn't know who he was. i stopped the car and i realized he was a plain clothed police officer who had something on his radio saying there was a shooter loose in this federal building, and there was a shoot-out going on. right after he said that, there were helicopters descending and police cruisers and new information we had at this hour how it played out. cnn has confirmed with a law enforcement official that

this is a consumer electronics show in las vegas. this is it.the whole world is talking about it now. the ar drone from a french company called paret. you can play games with it. off controller that comes along with it. but you can also sync it to your iphone or to another phone and control it that way. there are various ways to use this. one thing you can do with it is mount a camera on it, also mount listening twices adevices and p talking about the big brotherishness of it all. you can do things with advanced cameras, but there are more fun and innocent ways to use it like fun and games with your friends. not available in stores yet, but when it is this summer they're saying it will cost less than $500, which means we'll get away with one of those. the next thing, the 3d tv. we have some video of that. we have some prices on this for you, as well. mitsubishi is talking about having one out that's $5,000. and our folks at cnn money are saying it's possible that there could be an 82-inch 3d tv set this year that falls below the $3,000 mark. so

so the tech junkies are buzzing about the world's largest consumer electronics show this week in las vegasst and greatest in everything from smart phones and even 3d televisions are being unveiled. joining me now, caroline mccarthy, reporter for cnet.com. what are the big standouts this week? >> what everybody is talking about above all are the 3d televisions. it has some novelty to it. it sounds like the sort of things they talked about in the '50s that we would be using now. after "avatar," they're thinking that technology can now be moved to the home theater. it is a gamble. they don't know whether consumers will catch on. >> i'm thinking for the sports junkies, absolutely. like the sports bars, great. >> espn is launching a 3d channel, not 24 hours, but big sporting events like some of the world cup soccer stuff in south africa this summer, that is going to be broadcast in 3d. you will need glasses to see it. and those will be expensive too. that's one of the pratfalls to this all of the various accessories involved like the stereo system, the glasses, that is going to add up to quite

a week ago yesterday -- monday, two days ago, i was in a place about 35 miles outside las vegas, theharry allen plant. it's going to be the most clean natural gas facility producing electricity anyplace in america. 700 men and women were working on that construction project. but that was only part of it. we were there because it was a background of a construction project, people walking and running, doing the jobs that they needed to do, trucks moving back and forth. the reason we were there is because the western area power administration, wapa, under the stimulus bill we passed, had the ability to do low -- to do loans that were very, very low interest loans, and we had -- we were there to announce a public-private partnership between ellis power, n.v. energy, wapa. it will bring electricity from the northern part of the state to the southern part of the state for the first time in the history of the state of nevada. we became a state in 1864. why is that important? it will allow nevada to be energy independent in two and a half or three years, but just as important, mr. president,

but it is really the industry doing this las vegas-style gambling with lending as a way of manging a -- making a lot of profits, not a way of increased homeownership. so a lot of the great ideas from denmark and elsewhere sound great but, you know, you're really talking about getting people into homeownership. what we're talking about is really a mall feasant, unregulated industry that's allowed to get away with murder, and hopefully we're going to have a congress that has the -- i have to think of a nice word to do this -- that has the fortitude to really change the system so we return to ethics and a rule of law in our system of regulating financial services sector. >> great. ralph, you had a question? >> [inaudible] i think it was 1988 or 1978 we worked to get the national cooperative bank law passed. to learn how to quit spending as much in the past and one of the things the gambling casinos in las vegasned many, many years ago, if you let people use chips instead of cash they'll spend more. the credit card company learned the same thing. >> rick: yeah. >> maybe we should unlearn that. >> rick: one of the things you recommend for folks who are not in so dire filing into bankruptcy and still having problems nonetheless is to look into changing the deductible on some insurance policies that you hold. that could help out and raise some cash? >> absolutely, we can look at our entire life and we should look at our entire life, whatever we were doing caused us to get to where we're at which means we need to go back now into the new times and reevaluate everything, including the amount of insurance we have on automobiles, the type of insurance we have on our house, every expense should be looked at could i raise the deductible and therefore lower the premium and would that extra money be a risk worth taking, in many cases the answer will be yes, it's a risk, but a risk worth taking. >> rick:
