that's behind us to the west of las vegas boulevard. the whole thing was on the east side. if you're -- so the other side of las vegas boulevard, so it would be to the west and behind us so that would make sense given what we heard the shots would come from behind us across las vegas boulevard. i mean if i had to guess in terms of feet, you know, maybe if you run it maybe like 0.2 mile. >> 0.2 but again so we're not talking 100 to 200 feet. a fair amount of distance. >> yeah, it's definitely more than a couple hundred feet. it would take you, you know, it would take you at least a minute or two to cross las vegas boulevard and get to mandalay it's not like you could walk there in 30 seconds. at least a couple-minute walk. >> i heard from a previous eyewitness who thought the shooting was going on for well over a minute? >> it was longer than that but i know a shooting obviously surprisingly long. as i said there was, again, i'm guessing but at least five or six kind of series of pops in a row that sounded like to me -- that sounded like bottle rockets, sounded like mini fire

there were people lying on las vegas boulevard. they were shot. there's blood everywhere. it's horrifying. you know. you hear it on tv, but you don't think it's going to happen to you. >> now our cbs las vegas affiliate has been following this breaking news all night. >> reporter: so we're behind the tropicana right now. we're on reno avenue. absolute chaos. we even seen trucks filled with people with gunshot wounds, bloods. people running through the streets, hundreds running from the festival shaken up. we're actually joined by andrea and shannon caffey who were at the festival. i know you're pretty shaken up, but can you describe what you saw earlier? >> we were in the vip tent and about eight shots went off. we thought they were firecrackers. we were by the port-a-potties. where was that? >> by the mandalay bay. >> we thought it was fine. everyone laid down. event staff was telling everybody to get down and they were trying to evacuate us out the back. the problem was the fences were all bolted together. everybody worked together. they worked together. they staged the i

las vegas strip of shooters at other resorts, other hotels people were sheltering in place terrified. they did confirm that there are no other shooters at other resorts. there are no explosives around las vegas boulevardther. still they did have the airport shut down for a short period of time. we understand that some flights now are starting to take off as well. this is the kind of thing that las vegas has drilled for many, many times. unfortunately now it is something that has become a reality for them. as far as the dead, as you mentioned, 100 injured, more than 20 dead. this is because full looked at that video, this is a large outdoor concert venue. there were they said in some cases up to 30,000 people there and so this shooter was up above. they were packed in the if you've been to these outdoor concert venues there's fencing to kind of keep people inside the gated area so it was pretty tough for people to see what was going on, pretty tough for people to get out. we don't know if all of those were due to gunfire. some may have been injured just trying to get out and get to safety. we had some video from our director of production and news operations bill buyer who was on the scene as well. he

this is the corner of las vegas and central boulevard. the shooting less than half a mile back over my right shoulder. police locked this strip down. it was very eerie to hear the las vegas strip at 11:30 with no people talking. the only lights you saw beneath the neon were red and blue. so as the night went on, police in s.w.a.t. gear, full s.w.a.t. gear with long guns went to casino, hotel, casino, who tell to make sure that the safety concerns were addressed. what they did is they evacuated those places. all the patrons came up with their hands out. then we started to hear from the victims. it was determined that wasn't the place. we started seeing people filter out, some very disheveled, some very shocked. others have seen the horrific nature of what we've been describing all morning long. i talked to one woman who said there were piles of body near her, she had to use them on top of her to play dead. another woman hid with her significant others in the bushes for upwards of an hour just to make sure that the safety concern had passed

the southbound portion of las vegas boulevard is now completely open. we are working diligently and i believe we just opened up two of the northbound lanes and completion of the northbound lanes should conclude sometime this evening. bear in mind the investigation a lotoing, i don't have of answers for you yet. understanding nobody wants answers to why more than the police and the victims families. we have a responsibility to get it right and that is why it will take time. at best there is some howresting reporting at long the shooting lasted and how long it took us to get into the room. the first question, how long did the shooting last. we are prepared to give your information. the first call came into our dispatch center at 10:08 p.m. the suspect fired up and on somewhere between nine and 11 minutes. the suspect fired over a dozen or so belize. 10:19 p.m. eased at i want you to think about that. arefirst minute the police aware of shots being fired at 10:08 p.m. and it stops that 10:19 p.m. and remarkable response by this police department. another q

the concert was across las vegas boulevard, exact ily across the street. so those shot hs to come out of the 32nd floor winn doe, cross the street of las vegas boulevard into the crowd of 22,000 people. and as i have spoken to people all night, i have seen people in shock. i have seen people emotional. i have seen people trying to process what they just went through. but they were trying to save their lives by going and under cars and under barricades, anywhere they could find to not be shot. now we do understand that the red cross is meeting with families because there are many people that do not know where their loved ones are right now. they are seeking to find what hospital they may be. the coroner has set up a hot line for people who have missing family members and cannot find them. and there is an all-out call today from united blood for blood supply. they need blood in this area. >> we have seen lines already of people waiting to give blood, to do what they can to help the hundreds of people in need. more than 400 people now taken to area hospitals.

we are on las vegas boulevard, the southern end and they were fleeing right past us. tonight it's still an active scene but still a different type of scene. we'll take you a block behind me, the las vegas boulevard that's open 24/7 usually is shut down. all you see is police cars and cars belonging to federal agents. you look up to the 32nd floor, you can see the two windows still blown out and if you look carefully, the fbi agents are continuing their work inside that sweet that was occupied by stephen paddock where he did all the shooting 64 years old from that suite. fbi agents are working around the clock. let's take you to the university medical center. we mentioned the update, 59 deaths so far, 527 people injured. many of those victims were transported here and there are people there waiting for any good news from their loved ones. throughout las vegas this has been touching to see. there are several vigils some of them organized and others like this one. this was about 50 people just a few blocks from us where we're standing right now. and yes, there are crisis

las vegas. that's the latest from las vegas boulevard. i'm raj mathai. ck to you in the studio. >> what is the mood there. las vegas is a get away for people. they go to have fun and gamble. what is it like there now? >> reporter: as you can imagine, a lot of sadness. beyond the sad nnness, there's shock. the first thing you notice, coming into the airport and the hotel, and on to the streets is a blank look on people's faces of just shock. i think what's going to happen now and unfortunately we have seen the tragedies play out in san bernardino and orlando, it's going to turn into anger of what can we do to move forward with the mass violence. >> exactly. >> before we let you go, i know the strip is a big part of the tourist attraction there. a lot of people walk up and down. is that restricted or can people walk in portions of it? >> reporter: it's a good question. the majority of the strip is open. this area where we are, and keep in mind, to my left, right here for 200 yards away is the airport. that's the airstrip, the las vegas airport. behind me is

but that las vegas itself is getting back to what it is used to being, that is a pretty busy city. even at night, a 24-hour town. you see folks here along las vegas boulevard which is back open now. the crime scene just across the street to the left of the screen. if you look into the middle of the screen in the median of las vegas boulevard, we have seen quite a few people coming by to leave candles, flowers, and messages. take a closer look of that memorial there. we have seen this outpouring of support from residents as well as the tourists here in las vegas. there have been several candlelight vigils with people to mourn, pray, or just be together as one. i spoke with a few, here's what they had to say. >> got out of work, got together. it was kind of like our release, you know what i mean? people need time to heal. a lot of us are dealing with our own demons. whatever happened, it happened. can't be undone. we definitely need the healing to start. >> it's beautiful and comforting seeing the community come together as one. helping each other out. >> reporter: at least one of the casino properties on the strip has put in new security measures. at least

. >> reporter: back again live on las vegas boulevard, you can see a lot of the flowers, balloons, candles that have been left behind by mourners and well-wishers for the victims of this terrible shooting that took place just a few hundred feet away from where i'm standing. for her, for savannah, there's a long road to recovery. she is on the road right now driving back from las vegas to sonoma county. she is studying to become a teach you but taking a break from the studies because of her medical situation and she hopes to be able to return to school soon. as for the bullet in her back, she doesn't even know if that's going to be removed or not. she has to see a specialist when she gets back to the bay area to determine the risk it could pose to her spine. if there is no risk, doctors may determine, she tells me, that it simply is better to leave it in her body. but she will have to be checked periodically over the course of the rest of her life to see if that bullet moves and presents further risks. so she has a long uncertain future ahead with her injury. >> ken, i'm just wondering your
