my recollection is the latino vote, romney was down to 27%. that is an unsustainable margin for a political party. if the latino votes drifted the way of the african-american vote, whites have dropped 2% every election since 1988, and so some of that can speak to immigration, but there are other splits between latinos based on the country of origin, how long they have been in the country, whether they speak spanish or not, their level of acclamation, and as a party, there's this fundamental sort of umbrella. do you seem to be welcome in that party? and you can have a policy debate in a way that makes people feel welcome, and you can have a debate that makes people feel excluded. doesn't matter where else you agree. they don't feel like they've been particularly welcomed. we worked -- i did not do the work, but governor purdue at georgia, we tested a bunch of commercials after the first round of immigration to test republican commercials on the topic of immigration. so we looked at some stuff that was running republican primaries and how that w

[ laughter ] >> reporter: hi, everybody. excuse me. i got to do a little bit of business here. it's currently 63 degrees here in the mission but we are inside the mission cultural center of latino arts where it's actually about 30 degrees warmer because upstairs we have hundreds and hundreds of people. i'm being joined by jenny rodriguez from the mission cultural center for the latino arts and also right here another guest. what brings you here to the cultural center? >> yes, we're kicking off the hispanic heritage month celebration along with latino film festival tonight and tonight's the celebration as we have the last three years with cbs and our film starts tomorrow night at victoria theater in san francisco. and then we're over at opera plaza at the weekend so i encourage people to come out and see the films. one of the screenings venues is the mission cultural venue so that's what brings us here. >> reporter: it is hispanic heritage mont

you also talk about some specific latino-americans, including two of my idols.es and their role fits into latino-american history. >> you know, cesar chavez is such a celebrated man. his own postage stamp, a huge auditorium at the department of labor dedicated in his name with a large portrait of cesar there. i wanted to spend a little more time in the book with deloris, who's still alive and kicking in her 80s. she outruns people half and a third of her age. she was the one who was negotiating contracts with the growers, who didn't want to do business with any mexican, much less a woman. she was totally busting down barriers both inside her community and outside the community. you know, it wasn't that easy for these mexican migrant workers to know that their fate was somewhat in the hands of a woman as well. there was a lot of chauvinism on both sides of the negotiating table. >> and ray, in politics you hear about latinos or hispanics, but of course as you point out, there's also these other ways to think about it with all the different countries represented.

one, recognize latino leaders. two, it's the student component that's also involved.u're a graduate of that, now a leader. give us brief history if you can. >> i attended portraits of success as a student at mount pleasant high school, really impacted seeing successful latinos in our community, our backyard. it inspired me, motivated me to take action, i can stay positive, during college as a volunteer. a few years later invited to be on the board, now chairman of the board. excited to bring that same experience to all the students here in silicon valley. >> a lot of folks unsung heroes, folks who don't do the work they recognize. talk about the selection process, if you will, difficult decision eliminating those who might not be selected. >> always a tough decision to find candidates for this. congratulations to you, being one of our recipients. >> thank you. >> that's truly what they are, portraits of success. these are people giving back to the community doing positive things. it's amazing when you bring these readers to actually speak to the youth, future leaders
