it turns out latinos are susceptible to this.and they get the worst nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and the worst incidence of diabetes. 50% of california latinos get diabetes. they have a genetic polymorphism that makes their liver susceptible. they need a warning label on every can of soda, saying, latinos, you will get sick from this, because they will and they do. and i have to take care of them. so where is the label? and finally, the parents parens patriae. the state is the parent. how the mississippi attorney general sued big tobacco. because the state is more than a nominal party. they stand to lose big. they are losing $1.5 billion for diabetes and the state of california every year. there is no requirement for tort liability. all you have to do is show the economic harm. and the state is not a nominal party, which is easy to do. we could recoup medicaid for diabetes and other diseases as well. all sorts of academic papers and more academic papers. and then non-academic. fat chance, which you can purchase today. this wi

i have joined latino groups, i have advocated for some of the needs of latinos, and i have done it because it has given me a sense of comfort and security in my life. we all gravitate to that which we grew up in because it is the familiar and the familiar is security and confidence building but i am very careful to give a broader lesson in my book, to talked about -- not to insulate yourself within your community but simply to use it as a springboard into the larger world. go back, no your culture, have your friends feel their warmth, then go out and explore. that is what they are there for, to support you when you call down, to push you out again and let you try new things, i talked about building a bridges and not building world's in my book and i talk in those terms because i don't believe in isolation. i believe every community should try to go out into the world and embrace it all, whether it is going to a place like princeton which was completely alien to me to making friends who are not latinos. it is too convenient not to reach out and make friends with people different from you bu

latino voters were very disillusioned. for latinos, our word is our bond. word of honor. he broke it. you cannot gloss over it. voters who were ready to run away from obama, we did not give them anywhere to run to. where were they going to run to? the guy who was espousing self deportation? the guy who was hanging out with an offer -- author of an anti- latino vote? if you look at the romney campaign, and i have stopped wanting to talk about it because after a lot of shock therapy, i've tried to forget it. [laughter] it almost seemed to me like they made a calculation that they could get a very low, 29% of the hispanic vote, and still win. if they got enough of the white vote out. they just ignored the hispanic vote. rule number 12 winning votes is asking people to go. it is making the case. it is persuading people to be on your side. it is showing people that you can relate. timeromney had a hard relating to white people. imagine relating to us. think -- i don't think -- i don't agree with your assessment that hispanics voted for obama because they would be given things.

then latinos are not really taught their own history well if they go to public school. with the introduction i say i have not done my job at least once a chapter you say i did not know that. how come i did not know that? so i think i hit both assignments well for the general audience to give an idea how one add of six fellow citizens came to be here and for the latino audience, some affirmation, a history they did not know those proud and a not so proud history. leaning forward to the next 30 years where we become a bigger part. >> host: why did you start 500 years ago? >> guest: the first european settlements in what became the united states, not the western hemisphere or north america but what became the united states was a column of soldiers, a priest and saddler's coming up from mexico city in june now new mexico said delaying in santa fe. started there because to me that is where the united states is born before jamestown or plymouth for st. agusta in florida. they tried to make a way in the southwest and there were looking for salts or gold to sell a and that is w

here we are looking at ninth graders, african americans and latinos. we see this translated down to san francisco. it's not just national data. we see this also among our adults and with the latino and african american populations that consume more sugary drinks. >> can i ask about adolescence. it's my understanding that a ucla study shows slight decrease in younger children but in adolescence there has been an increase in energy drinks and marketing are tied in with a lot of the types of sugary beverages. can you touch a little bit on that? >> yes. i think it's part of the environment that children are in and as an adolescence you are going to have more independence and more pocket change. the industry does a lot of marketing towards young people and whereas in the younger age groups parents have more control of what their children drink. i think that contributes. the whole series of pieces that contribute to children drinking more sugary drinks. does that answer your question? >> yes. >> so, taking a look at soda expenditures it tracks pretty closely

this is especially important for the african american and latino communities. it's been a great pleasure to work with amanda and other staff have been great to work with as well in coming up with this report. also christina gupta, a senior health planner has been a great advisor on this issue as well and roberto vargas from the university of san francisco health policy program and dr. laura smith who is a professor of health policy at ucsf who have been visors on this study and advising us on the impact of sugar sweetened beverages. at public comment i just want to acknowledge beatrice cardenas duncan who is a community leader and active with groups like shape up sf and the labor movement as well is here. breks board of education board of education president is here. and corner store coalition and an organizer with t ndc and todd davis who has been a great leader in our neighborhood as well. they will be speaking at public comment. we also have a number of other folks from different communities that will speak a little bit later. before i introduce the first sp

as i've heard, they kept saying they don't want to court the latinos.t they want to do is present what they are, republicans, the people will come to them. do you think that's a good strategy? >> that's less a true false question and more like a doctoral dissertation. [laughter] i'm going to try to give you a short answer. look, the president had horrible political times since the election in trying to get anything done. 's approval rating is down and it's a perilous time for him. at the same time the republicans have done much to increase, to address the problems that caused him to lose the last election. cause of them to lose the popular vote and fight for the last six elections including the hispanic vote. republicans might decide to work on in a way that would help them with that rising electoral group. i think that there's lots of reasons why democrats have done better with the latino vote, but clearly some of it has to do with the most basic question of all in presidential politics and some extent national politics which is the question of does th
