for those of us who work in and around latino media and latino issues, pew hispanic center carries a lot of weight. so, for those who don't know, what exactly is the pew hispanic center? what is it that you do? >> we're a non-partisan, non-advocacy research organization based through washington, d.c. we're funded by the pew charitable trust out of philadelphia. and the pew hispanic center is actually part of a broader larger center called the pew research center. we do public opinion surveys, but we also do a lot of look at the demographics of the hispanic community. and one of our signature products actually is, how many unauthorized immigrants are there in the country. but our point is to provide facts. what do we know about the latino population in the us and how are they changing the us and how is the us changing them? >> hinojosa: so, results of the 2010 census. we're now talking about latinos being more than 50 million? >> that's correct, 50.5 million were counted in the 50 states plus the district of columbia. and when you include the island of puerto rico, you get about anoth

if there were to be a latino on the ticket, it would be latinos speak a lot to emotions. karen: and latinos ted cruz and marco rubio, of course. many people assume that most latinos are democrats, but there is a very large latino republican base, isn' t there? oscar: absolutely. it is important to demystify the votes monolithically. if we were a country, there is hardly unity when you talk about even the smallest country populations, voting and behaving exactly the same way. i think that applies to the karen: carlos, we were talking about the term "hispandering," candidates faking interest in issues important to the latino community. do you find that is the case? case, especially we' ll see it in we are not seeing it so far on the republican side. we are seeing it on the democratic side. secretary clinton has definitely engaged in that. we are not seeing it on the republican side -- karen: we are seeing the opposite on the republican side. carlos: but we will see it with the eventual nominee. they realize it is an important segment of the population. oscar is absolutely r

it certainly is for many lati s latinos.s equally as important. >> i'd say a couple things. one thing is i think a lot of people who are listening know that latinos support progressive environmental rules more strongly than any other group in the united states of america. they're much more likely to worry about environmental issues and there are really good reasons for it. for one thing, their families -- 80% of latino families live in a place where the air is polluted. there is a health issue. 10% of latino kids have asthma. the fact of the matter is there is a health issue here in latino communities that's very severe. and the second point is, when you think about climate, we really think about it largely pass a jobs issue. to actually solve this is going to force us to take actions that will create a lot of jobs for working people, good paying jobs for working people. so when you look at latino communities, they absolutely support progressive environmental rules and progressive change to respond to the climate crisis more

we do talk a great deal about what will happen with latinos.the big question behind american politics is whether latinos it will remain a permanent democratic constituency or will they move into the republican camp as they get richer. they will inject a lot of social conservatism into the democratic party, pro, antiabortion, and religious. they will move the democratic party to the right. as they get richer, i think they won't move into the republican camp. look at southern california latinos upward social mobility through business and home ownership, all indicating a long-term allegiance to the republican party. they're not going to government. they're going through the private sector. the reason why so many latinos in california moved into the democratic camp -- if you look at the texas republican party which was not so anti-immigrant, the latinos remain amenable to being wooed by the republican party. they will go the way of other former immigrant groups, moving right as they move up. you have this flow of poor people across the borders who
